A Possible Explanation to why People may Hate Key/Jun Maeda Stuff

I think it's because they view them for their plot and how well written it is as a whole.

When you look at it that way, they all aren't that great.

Clannad is a story of two people falling in love and starting a family, and some magical orbs, OBE nonsense, dango and starfish, because why not.

Kanon is about a guy going to his hometown to tie up some loose ends left after he left.

Air is about a guy and girl falling in love but the girl is sick with a very plot driven disease (Oh and we'll throw in some long winded fantasy ancestory bloodline bullcrrap for good measure. Cuz over complicating things is fun!)

Angel Beats , Angel Beats is about Purgatory and coming to tterms with your circumstances and d3eveloping hope of reaching fudfilment despite it

Little Busters is about a group of friends who start a baseball club.

Soo, the stories themselves are not very appealing on their own, and when you look at the drama thrown into it from a critical point of view, well that drama aint always realistic (Look at Yuri's backstory and try to guess the likelhood of such craziness occuring for real.)

However people still love these shows. They consider these sshows the masterpieces of anime, Why?

Emotion.

To me, that's usually the biggest goal for Key showss, and that's the only thing I look for when watching them. The plot will be very simple, the drama may be a bit farfetched and pokable, but it will tug at my heart strings.

Their ability to do that is why so many people still love these less than awesome plot shows

I'm not trying to convince people to change their view point, I am just giving my opinion on the matter and would love to hear yours

TL;DR

They're boring. Is that a suitable enough explanation?

Putting blubbering moeblobs in your face to manipulate you into sadness isn't being masters of emotion.

Though Episode 18 of After Story is definitely the rare occasion where they did this properly.

Little Busters gets hate because the entire game sucks until you get to the Refrain.

Probably because his works show potential, but end up with a lot of plot holes, bland characters, stupid conclusion and melodrama. You have to turn off your brain to enjoy, forget about reasonings and stuff...

yea i'm having a hard time finishing Kanon and Little Busters. I really don't see the appeal in these shows. I also dropped After Story in one episode lol.

Possibly because of the supernatural BS thrown in for the "feels". And this is coming from a guy who really liked Clannad as a whole.

I think you have pointed out why people like them, but now why people dislike them. Because I honestly doubt many people except great overarching plotlines in VN adaptions like that. It's just that these 'emotions' you mentioned are - for me - often badly written, unbelievavle and therefore not givign me any feels. Be it LB or Clannad, at least 75% of the arcs were just silly, melodramtic and/or too far-fetched as you mentioned, not making me buy into the drama or making me like the characters. Giving me zero emotions.
Now given your correct observation that the emotions are the main draw of these shows, when you find out that the emotional parts are mostly badly written/not giving you any feels, I'd say that's a valid reason to dislike the show.

In fact the overarching plotline of clannad (AS) was far better than any of the individual arcs because it was the only time the show managed to give me some feels.

So yeah, I think 90% of the people disliking key stuff dislike it because they go in expecting great drama and big emotions and leave feeling kinda betrayed because the drama was far-fetched, unrealistic and silly and they didn't get any feels, or not as many as expected.
I probably regret this post by now.

Well just as you said, emotion is the basis on which the shows are basically standing on. If you don't feel for the characters, the shows are a waste of time.
I liked Kanon because I liked the characters and so I felt the emotions.
As for Clannad and Angel beats, I'd rather not say anything. I didn't like the characters, so they are shit to me.
That said, the stories aren't that appealing to me. So I wouldn't consider Kanon a masterpiece. But its still a pretty decent and enjoyable show.

Supernatural needs to be all in, not just something to convenience the story in my opinion. This is why I generally have an average experience with the shows I've seen that have been adapted from Key. Kudos to others if that's what they like, but it felt rather silly to me when I watched Clannad and even worse when I watched Afterstory.

emotions gets the better of the majority of us. can't help it lols. but true i watched little busters + refrain and i thought it was good until i watched more anime to see that it's just a simplistic anime with emotions added in.

I've always... always been watching you... This whole time... Because you were there... That's why I was able to try hard. So you could have some balance! So you wouldn't treat me like a kid! So you would see me as an actual girl! Even while you were gone... You were right here! You were right here in my heart!

The horrendously bad art (other than Little Busters which had great art in the anime) doesn't help.

KyoAni didn't do a good job when it comes to adapting Key's Art into anime form (granted, they're not good to begin with)

PA Work did much better with Angel Beats, the only thing PA Work lacks is experience in emotional scene(imo, KyoAni have pretty much mastered handling of Key's storytelling) and budget.

PA Work is getting better though, Nagi no Asukara was well done.

I understand where you're coming from, but emotion is not enough to justify me enjoying a show. Especially the way Key tries far too hard to tug out our heartstrings.

OP, I think you're selling the story aspect very short. One of Maeda's best skills as a storyteller is how he mixes magical realism into his stories and the execution of little things to big dramatic effect. This has always been one of the biggest reasons I've loved his work.

If I were to take a stab at the topic and try to pin down a reason people don't like him, I would say it is his female characters. They are infantilized to the point that it would not be out of the question to ask if any of them are missing a chromosome. Very few of them have any agency over their situation and often must rely on the only man in their life to save them from whatever horrible past trauma plagues their present selves and he has never shown any evidence of moving past that. Seriously, the man takes moe to an extreme.
