We had a pretty long discussion about this in English class. We got a packet full of common fallacies people use and were told to avoid them. I was pretty surprised when I read some of them, because I use them, and I hear people around me using them a lot. Do you sometimes use these while arguing? Which type of fallacy do you see most in life and mal? Definition of Fallacy: Fallacies are common errors in reasoning that will undermine the logic of your argument. Fallacies can be either illegitimate arguments or irrelevant points, and are often identified because they lack evidence that supports their claim. Examples of common fallacies: (1) Slippery Slope: This is a conclusion based on the premise that if A happens, then eventually through a series of small steps, through B, C,....., X, Y, Z will ja[[en, too, basically equating A and Z. So, if we don't want Z to occur, A must not be allowed to occur either. Ex: If we get rid of hentai, people will respect anime more. (2) Generalization: This is a conclusion based on insufficient of biased evidence. In other words, you are rushing to a conclusion before you have all the relevant facts. Ex: Even though it's only the first episode, I can tell this anime is going to be shit (3) Post hoc ergo propter hoc: This is a conclusion that assumes that if 'A' occurred after 'B' then 'B' must have caused 'A' Ex: I watched Clannad and then I got AIDS, so Clannad must have given me AIDS. (4) Genetic Fallacy: A conclusion is based on an argument that the origins of a person, idea, institute, or theory determine its character, nature, or worth. Ex: This anime was made by a person whose father was in the nazi party, therefore it must be bad (5) Begging the Claim: The conclusion that the writer should prove is validated within the claim Ex: Disgusting and pointless moeblob anime should be abolished (6) Circular Argument: This restates the argument rather than actually proving it. Ex: Steins;Gate had a good plot because it kept my attention (7) Either/or: This is a conclusion that oversimplifies the argument by reducing it only two sides or choices. Ex: You either stop watching anime, or destroy your future. (8) Ad hominem This is an attack on the character if a person rather than his/her opinions or arguments. Ex: Your opinion is invalid because you're a dumbass (9) Ad populum: This is an emotional appeal that speaks to positive (such as patriotism, religion, democracy) or negative (such as terrorism or facism) concepts rather than the real issue at hand. Ex: If you were a true anime fan, you would be outraged (10) Red Herring: This is a diversionary tactic that avoids the key issues, often by avoiding opposing arguments rather than addressing them Ex: Asspulls in shows may be annoying, but how are the creators going to support their family? (11) Straw Man: This oversimplifies an opponent's viewpoint and then attacks that hollow argument. Ex: People who support piracy are trying to bankrupt companies (12) Moral Equivalence: This fallacy compares minor misdeeds to major atrocities. Ex. People who didn't cry at the end of Anohana are as heartless as Hitler |

Generalizations and circular arguments are among the most common informal fallacies on this forum, by far. The others are also present to an overwhelming extent, but not so notably as the aforementioned. no, this isn't a generalization |

Generalization, ad hominem, and straw man are the most common fallacies I notice on MAL but you can find just about any of those here. The only one that I notice I use is circular argument. |

I don't use them because I'm aware how atrocious they are as arguments. |

Hell yeah I do, pisses off people! On a real note, it really is hard to avoid every single one unless you were preparing for an actual debate. So, to avoid them in conversation or here, on a forum, is almost impossible and people will point it out. |

Generalization can be inevitable in most situations since it's such a convenient way to argument. Ad hominem is always hilarious. |

I generalize most times when I just plain to do some random argument... When it comes about anime, it's more because I want to live my expectations. |

Yeah, I think that everyone's used several of those at some point in an argument, intentionally or unintentionally. Most people probably don't even realize that what they say are fallacies. Interesting list, and those are just the "common" ones. I chuckled at Ad hominem, boy have I been guilty of throwing those around. |

Considering the personalities of the majority of the people I argue with and the reasons why I was arguing with them, I tend to use AD hominems A LOT. Im sure a lot of you guys have seen me use them here in fact. However when Im taking an argument seriously, I won't tend to use any of these |

Well... I try not to. Many times when I'm arguing, I use analogies. Lots of people seem to think analogy = changing subject. And that is annoying. |

I mainly use Ad hominem when I argue with people where I live (I live in the Bible Belt). I only know of myself and 4 people that are Atheists. Those 4 people are 1 family. Basically, I'm a man of logic in a sea of indoctrinated people that can't counter my arguments. |

But of course. And I find it incredibly hard for not to use them. Most of the themes I discuss in MAL are philosophic themes, so there is no way to avoid fallacies. Pretty much there is no way evidence can support my thoughts because my thoughts are my thoughts (no shit), and if I were to make a statement without any fallacies, it would be so perfect that no one would even have chance to argue against it. Because it would be simply a possibility. There is no fun with that, so I usually intentionally put some flaws in my arguments/posts so that I can have some fun with the debate, and fallacies are very essential with that kind of thing. Of course, there are always some people that hate fun and simply quote my statement saying "lol nice Post hoc ergo propter hoc". Screw them! The fallacy I mostly use is the one I forgot the name, but it is basically: To prove your own argument, you attack the other person's argument to give the illusion that your argument is correct. This works pretty well most of the time, until some dick decides to attack my own argument while ignoring all my attacks (the weakness of that fallacy) I just noticed I love debating more than I thought I loved to |

Good thread. We never went in depth on arguments in any English class I took. Though I've always heard the phrase "begging the question" instead of "begging the claim". Though "begs the question" gets abused all the time (so I can see why people would prefer claim). Even L from Death Note misused "begs the question" in the English Dub. |
