didn't Jin say in the last episode that he wasn't familiar with the west? doesn't this whole episode conflict with that statement?

loved the episode anyway ofc, plot holes just tend to bother me

Lighthearted and comedic episode. :) Definitely enjoyed it. It perfectly matched the "Samurai Champloo" atmosphere, whatever I mean by that. True, it was pointless... but still cool. :D I like that Mugen doesn't need kanji for his name... he just needs the symbol for infinity. Nice.

After so many great episodes I watch this one, I didn't like it much, it felt pretty uninteresting and pointless as it has been said before.

Modern day grafftti in ancient Japan usually would not be compatible but here it feels natural. And I was very impressed with Mugen's teacher. Finally someone got through that thick head of his!
Although it did not advance the plot, good episode anyway.

Funny episode! Finaly made use of the Jin cant read thing back in the recap episode. Nice!

Love the hip-hop culture that gets thrown in here, and then mixed with feudal Japanese culture for this weird but cool mix!

Mugen's teacher, Bundai was the best in this episode for me, whose seiyuu is one of my favourite. I only heard Wakamoto Norio acting as a gentleman (Baccano) or a narrator (Hayate no Gotoku, Nichijou), so it was a bit of surprise hearing him with such a great spirit and enthusiasm for the 文字. :p

Also that epic handshake.

This episode was the greatest! They were true to the show's street side. Wicked tagging.
And I love that teacher! He's the best teacher ever!

It might have been filler but it did mix some elements of the hip-hop culture with the Edo period, which I thought was great. Plus it did bring back a plot point, the fact that Mugen couldn't read, from the recap episode. Great that he was finally able to learn to read too!

I wasn't sure for the majority of the episode if I even watched this one back when it aired on adultswim, but then I realized I only remembered one part: "Mugen, it means infinite. I made it myself."

Yeah, this episode sucks.

moo iii, they're getting off the course of the story...filler much???

the only funny thing was that the twins liked Momo and not fuu as she thought. poor girl.

anyways next ep better have something to do with the story or i will seriously drop this.

great episode, don't know what you guys are complaining about, with it being not related to the plot. 90% of the past episodes in this series havent. if you want a series that focuses on the plot, sure aint this one.

loving all the filler eps, mostly because theyre done REALLY WELL

It was an okey episode don't really know if this stuff really fitted in the story but hey not all to bad but already that kind of gratify in that era? The other story besides it about Mugan learning to read was quite fun as the teacher is dubbed by one of my favourite male voice actors!

Decent episode either way but more of a filler!

agreed, like cowboy bebop the guy's last show only had 5 episodes in the entire series relating to the plot and so far this one has had only about 2 or 3, with kids on the slop having no plot, people should be expecting filler and enjoying it for the entertainment it is rather than bitching about the plot progression, hell i think the most powerful episode sin this series was that 2 parter with mugen's past earlier depsite not having anything to do with the plot

Sad taste you have there kid you came up to me in the first place making you look more like a kid who got slapped without me even knowing it and start crying about it to me

Well, I agree it hardly has a decent plot but... I think that this is a clever social commentary on how eras are changing. In the Edo era, there were schools for training in the art of the sword, but the disciples of these sword masters are graffiti masters, symolizing the cnahge of people's interest in each passing era.

The POINT of the episode is the theme running throughout the entire show: rebelling against authority and social norms.

True, TECHNICALLY speaking, this episode did not really advance the story, but it was great nonetheless. Unlike your typical anime which is all about the plot, Samurai Champloo really tries to address certain issues, like how even back in those days, there were people who did not fit in because they were different and/or avant-gardists. The graffiti played really well on this part (without forgetting the music!). The twins, unlike their father, were unable to master the art of the sword which was typical back then for children to follow in their parents' footsteps. Instead, like Jin said, they took their revenge in their own personal way: through their art, graffiti.

Meh, im kinda rambling but all in all, i thought this episode brilliant - i've been loving everything since episode 10.

What noble-obsessions said AND I love love love the amalgamation of street- and samurai-influence in this anime. It's always present in character design, certain scenes, and the OST but this episode focused on it. The graffiti was amazing to look at and Mugen learned to read and write! So much win.
