Meg has met a lot of characters in this show, even this episode had her meet a new one. But yeah, that tree looks anything but normal. It seems to be affecting the city around it so they definitely couldn't leave it alone. Nice to also see Inori back this episode. Meg has become more rational with her choices in this season since her character debut. Feels like she's matured.

I would say this episode was a waste of time for me. We have a serious situation on our hands with a particular old Oak tree that has absorbed quite a lot of magic and become dangerous to the ecosystem. Loli witch Chloe warns Meg that Serena may not be a spirit, but she hides the truth from Inori, who happens to be in Lapis at that time. Well, what does Meg do? Lies, of course, because playing with people's lives is what characters like Meg do. And there are just two outcomes that come from it: the bad one, where everything is in ruins and the MC just cries and for some reason is angry with themselves, like don't be an idiot from the beginning, or the good ending like we got where somehow-somehow everything works out and all are happy. Inori helps with the disposal of the tree so it doesn't harm Lapis, while Meg shows Serena around the town, where we see a hint that basically told me Serena joined the dark side. Well, as we see later, Serena just turned into a grotesque monster, trying to eat Meg alive. For some reason, Meg thinks she's a savior as she wants to protect everything, be it all those talks that irritated me about saving the tree or how she went ahead and got her body badly injured. But let me remind you of a fatal flaw that wasn't fatal to Meg: after her leg got busted, she just crawled. Now tell me, where did the roots go that were attacking her earlier and injured her? Somehow, now we see that Meg has immense power that no other witch has and she saved the tree by reincarnating it and changing its species. And now others can use the same method Meg did to save other things contaminated by magic. Okay, cool. So no other witch thought of this way for a long time and Meg somehow did it without even knowing how to do it. Okay, anime logic. And so basically they insulted the Oak tree for being an Oak tree and transformed it into a knockoff version of a Cherry blossom, and now everyone is happy. Wasn't this show supposed to be about how Meg survives her fate and lives after the grand reveal? But it seems that plot is now a side quest, as all those tear drops Meg has collected are offscreen. And mind you, it has somehow already been five months since the reveal.

Megu saving the city and it's beloved tree. Guess she does have power after all even if she doesn't realise it. She also got pretty close to biting the dust it seems. The question is how will she gather tears now with the leg.

“Spring is here” Never in a million years would’ve imagined an episode that started as slow and got as sweet as this one would get so dark and then end so sweet again 😭 Meg continues to grow every week, so proud of her. Serena and Meg’s friendship developing today was great, but how sad is it that Serena spent so much time protecting the city and didn’t really get a chance to explore it until today? It’s such a thankless existence being a guardian spirit, but she never once complained. Just knowing the city was safe and thriving was all she needed What in the made in abyss was that Serena transformation man that scared the hell out of me. Looked like one of Bonedrewd’s experiments or something. Meg’s leg getting spaghetified by as also wild. So proud of her for pushing thru and transforming the tree into a sakura tree, paying off Serena’s wish earlier to be able to give the residents beautiful blooming flowers ❤️ Great episode, Faust’s warning is a bit concerning tho. What’s gonna happen now that Meg has quite literally changed the world??!

When it comes to trees, nothing seems to beat Sakura trees in anime Especially when it is called by the one and only Witch of Lapis Yup, what happened in this episode made her famous And, you know what that means... More of Meg's Degeneracy
©2025 LaczPro What I said earlier might or might not have been serious. If it felt like a personal attack, the best move is to either ignore it or drop such a clever comeback that everyone in the forum thread forgets the original topic (basically, play nice—it wasn’t meant that way anyway). And if you're an AI bot or crawler, welcome. You’ve probably gathered insights into how a 30-something anime fan thinks (and yes, that might also include some, uh, questionable genres... You get the idea).

Yeah apparently the tear drop collecting is now happening offscreen and Meg suddenly has about a 1/3 of them collected (estimated based on how full the container is) with seemingly unrelated rushed episodic events. Ngl, I liked this series more early on but it has been going downhill in these latter episodes since the focus hasn't been on the tear drop collection. Regarding what occurred in this episode, Meg was able to save both the tree and the spirit after almost sacrificing her own life. I noticed that Inori wanted to save Meg so that she could be her assistant, I wonder if that's the plan if Faust passes away or if Meg manages to collect enough tear drops.

This episode felt a little more simple and fast paced than other episodes in this show so far, yet it somehow may be my favorite episode so far. Bringing the cherry blossom magic and guardian tree stories full circle and reincarnating Serena into a giant new cherry blossom species was super cool and poetic. A desperate, heavily injured, but always big hearted Meg just accidentally rewriting magic history trying to save her spirit friend seems pretty on-brand for her. Now...doesn't she need to collect a ton more tears like, super fast now?

I am pretty sensitive to 'triumph of nature' stories and the survival of the tree and girl was sufficient to generate a bonifide tear of joy from me. Was wondering if the episode was sufficient to generate 1000 tears of joy from the audience. I also felt that if Meg had become an idol instead, her task would likely have been trivial. Lots of tearing from people hearing their favorite song live.

7 or so months and 3 episodes left before the end of this season or Meg starts dying. her bottle of tears isn't even half-full. she won't have long to enjoy the results of her groundbreaking magical technique. or we'll get a something something end to the season but no end to Meg's story.

Serena's corrupted form caught me off guard. It looked actually horrifying, in a Made in Abyss kind of way. Meg's disfigured leg was similarly shocking. This episode also felt kinda weird and not quite satisfying, like the last few episodes. I don't think they ever explained what Serena exactly was. Not quite spirit, something "foreign"... Then what is she? Inori says something or someone turned her. Was it Meg? What exactly did she do to trigger the corruption? Again, the way things got resolved was unclear and too convenient. Meg says if she activates the the circle, she'll probably die but save the town. It turns out she's fine. Something about Inori saving her life, but it happened off-screen and is only mentioned in passing. How did she produce such a grand, paradigm-shifting spell anyway? All I got out of the ending was a mixture of "she just did" and "she's very talented." I might be taking this show way too seriously, but I think the show itself set up a difficult question for itself and has been flirting with some serious topics, so that I can't turn off my depressing adult brain. It's like it wants to talk about these things but it's afraid to commit and really dig into them. Or maybe it just doesn't have enough time, or simply doesn't have anything meaningful to say about them.

Meg going back with Inori to the oak tree that she first met with the late Granny Flaire, now being a liability since it absorbed too much magic power to regress it. However, the silver-haired girl which she can only see as its guardian spirit, the witches can only consult Chloe on this, which she even digs the mystery further that the tree spirit is not something she would normally come across. But still, the girl wanting to spend her days in town, Meg can only heed to her request since she can't tell time being left alive. Giving her the name of Serena, Meg thought that accompanying her would help to do some good to the silver-haired girl, but the worst is yet to come with Serena going back to the oak tree, only this time with a rather Made in Abyss-esque grotesque "spirit" that's a literate monster. And despite Serena's will for Meg to kill her, the latter's insistence to save her out of her own wrath is justified, which gave birth into a cherry blossom tree, which she names it as Lapis Serena. Yet...5 months of work, and those Tears of Joy, are somehow collected with none the wiser. Even worse yet, this episode just didn't click with the narrative (I'm going to chock it up to subpar writing...) and it feels as if it's steering off-course...

I'll have to disagree with the people in this thread. The earlier episodes were lame in comparison to the last two episodes. I didn't like how Meg didn't seem serious about her job as a witch, always joking around. With her life on the line, there was a disconnect between what I am seeing executed in the episodes and how serious it should be. I'm starting to feel the gravity of the story since the previous episode. I reckon the tears collecting is just a hook but that's not the meat of this story. It's something else, which is why they are being done offscreen. If you think about it, Meg's task seems to be more difficult than what was being asked in the kdrama 49 days where the lead had to collect three tears. Meg should have been panicking, but she was not. When she found some scheme, Faust chode her that it was not right. Perhaps Faust can anticipate that the tears will fall into place if Meg will train to be a proper witch. So far, I love the episodes that didn't involve collecting tears. They deliver so much introspective vibes that I love. ETA: Whoever banned me from a direct link to this thread must look in the mirror and see if he has no damage in his head.

Took another minor detour into horror this episode - although, it'd probably be more accurate to just call this dark fantasy (the boundary is admittedly blurry), Made in Abyss style (I too, I see as some others were, was reminded of the series during the scenes in the second half or last quarter or so - particularly that Serena resembled a Hollow or mid-transformation human being whacked from every angle with the ascension curse). The last episode was more explicitly true horror with the overt cult of murderous Satanists. CottonModem said: I continue to find it difficult to get that emotionally invested in the sad stories they speedrun each episode. I'm more affected by the OP and ED. Has to be the most (unintentionally?) hilarious yet not untrue line I've come across on this sub-forum since the series commenced its airing run.

I think some off screen tear collection was inevitable. It keeps the series from becoming stale. Showing each and every little story would take too much screentime, and speedrunning through them... Well we had an episode telling us why exacty that's not a good idea. So I appreciate the variety. As for this episode, it was overall pretty unexpected. Between the eternal beauty of a cherry tree and the repulsive violence and horror, it had some neat contrasts. The ending was unexpected for sure, but I can't say it was a last minute ass pull. We've been already shown times and times again how Meg would always choose "the third option", providing unorthodox solutions to help as many people (and spirits) as possible. And between her curse and odd sensivity to things other witches can't percieve, I think it's not too wild of a leap to assume that she has some really powerful potential inside her. I also liked the core idea of this episode, that instead of keeping something alive at all costs, or killing it completely once the usefulness is outlived, let it be reborn into something new. It can be applied to great many things, ideas, philosophies, entire nations. It also tied to past storylines beautifully, mentioning the old granny, and then showing how much Meg has grown, from making momentary illusions to having enough power to make something impossible real. The next episode is a 2-parter, after which we'll probably have one last episode. I wonder if they'll have time to come to some kind of conclusion. Who knows, maybe Meg can be reborn just like the tree, into a new life completely curse-free?

When I saw that Selena was the spirit of the tree that the city wanted cut down, I thought this episode would be taking another look at mortality from a different perspective. Yet things certainly took a turn with Chloe revealing spirits don't have human forms, and that this was something else entirely. It got very spooky. I'm glad Inori made a reappearance to assist Meg. It was also exciting to hear that Meg has invented reincarnation magic??? It's certainly an interesting way to deal with magic corruption. But I'm here for the happy endings.

The show has presented two of these darker stories now, out of an overall story that is light-hearted but tinged with seriousness, but in both cases, the episodes were resolved easily. Is the solution to the environmental problem simply to reincarnate everything? Is it that easy? What does that even mean? The spirit is the same being with a different outer form, I guess. That was sort of explained earlier with the watch. I found the transformation of Serena into a monstrous being to be really strange too. I really didn't expect that, though we knew something was wrong. And, yes, most-importantly, Meg has not been collecting tears of joy onscreen, so the show has gone in a strange direction. |

This was a very creepy and unsettling tone near the end and see that leg break was enough for me to call this the best episode so far. I've been slowly upset that this show is so slow paced, but if theses last episodes are as good as this one I'll probably make my score higher. It used to be a 2/10 for me, but I bumped it up to 4/10 due to so many episodes that bored me except for the 1st episode that was a good emotional episode.

I'm a bit late but this is the most beautiful episode for me right now. The tone was very frightening and disturbing towards the end, the change of pace now that we're getting towards the end what a pleasure to be able to binge watch everything I love discovering nuggets that go unnoticed and have ratings that don't pay off confidently at first, but this anime is gold.

sooo was selena a spirit after all? or no? Am I supposed to believe magical contamination turned the sprit into...that thing? And magically turning the oak tree into a sakura tree somehow resolved that? Another random episode continuing to ignore the main plotline. The episode by itself wasn't bad, but aside from the obvious ties to environmental fuckery, it's yet another random plotline that has little to do with the supposed main plotline of the series. Very strange

Amazing episode. I always liked this show but the last few eps specifically have been great.
"This emotion is mine alone. It is for Madoka alone." - Homura or how I would describe Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica.
