An Anime being old changes over time. It always depends the time where are you are right now. It doesn't matter when someone started watching Anime for example in the late 90s, early 2010s, etc and obviously it doesn't matter when you were born since by 2025 all Anime released more than 10 years ago is already old. All Anime considered new now is going to be old 10 years after its release. It doesn't matter if they don't "look" old, an Anime from 10 yr ago look different from Anime released now.

I made this thread since some I read some people who started watching Anime in the 2000s or even in 90s are claiming such Anime "are not" old. I'm curious why they think like that since its obviously not true. Something released more than 15 years ago is def. old, no matter the reason. An Anime being old is obviously fine, its time to accept it as it should be. No need to be afraid of doing so. I love all Anime no matter the era.

What is old Anime for you and why?

Hmm... Maybe pre-2010. Still not so old, but anyway.

"Old anime" means before Evangelion. That's when it became possible to imagine anime doing absolutely anything. It's when anime changed from a still developing medium to a fully developed medium.

Old anime is like between astro Boy (1963-1966) and LOGH (1988-1997). The 2000's were more a period of transition because of the change from cel animation to digital animation and the beginning of the 2010's was more the headlight of the digital era. So making 2015 as benchmark for old it's like disregarding what actually happened to define what we consider old today and why.

Hmm, yeah I think this is about the same for me. Maybe 2008?
But yeah 2010 is when it started to get more refined and now easier to get into these days.

This also rings true haha. I recently rewatched it and was blown away by how old it is and then felt old, in turn...

@Nurguburu That's a very shallow way to judge. Compare the sophistication of its visual storytelling with something like Frieren rather than just the number of pixels.

These things aren't just based on time elapsed. Like "old literature" I'd say would be more like "before WWII" because it's the appearance of broadcasting and cinema which was the last seismic event there.

@logopolis Saying an Anime released almost 30 years ago is old isn't a "very shallow way to judge". I know Evangelion made a huge impact in the industry but it doesn't mean im going to act Evangelion was released yesterday. The only objective aspect to classify something old or new is how many years were released by the current year, in Anime such things are more obvious. You're mixing Anime who made a huge impact with things who have nothing to do.

@watsym i know its a common argument too but even digital Anime released in late 00s look old compared to something released in the mid 2020s.

The last time anime changed significantly was about 25 years ago. There was a minor change going from 4:3 to 16:9 about 20 years ago and another minor change going from SD to HD around 15 years ago. Since 2010 nothing really changed.

Also, I still remember back in 2003 when most people wouldn't consider watching TV anime from the 1990s since it looked "dated". That's how big a change anime underwent in that transition.

Old anime is anything drawn using cels. The break in visual style and production was so big I think it's a good place to separate them.

To me, I'd never consider anything post-2000/post-21st century as "old" or "old anime".

But also for me there is a strange phenomenon at play, whereby since I only first started watching anime in 2016, anime from, say, 2008 or 2003 does feel oddly older to me than, say, live action American films released during those exact same years. I think it's because since I wasn't watching and largely completely ignorant and unaware of those series and of the medium of anime as a whole back during those years when they were being released, they represent an inaccessible past which feels even further away to me versus the somewhat more accessible past (accessible via direct memories of my own lived experience) of the films and TV series I did actually watch at the time during those years when they were new or newer.

For me old anime is probably before 2011-2013. Like I wouldn't call something like Food Wars, that was released in 2015, a "classic" but I could say something like that for Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood or Steins;Gate, both which aired until 2011. But for me 90s anime are simply older anime and have a very different aesthetic and feel to them.

10-15 years ago is definitely not old unless you're a toddler. Make it at least a generation.
That said the history of anime only goes back about a hundred years, so the cut-off for old anime should be around the middle of the 70's.

I think there are two old styles, one is the cool type of old where the art has a different feel and fresh (90s or older), and the other is just modern anime but drawn worse (00s with exceptions). I say this as someone who has three 00s shows in my faves.

Oh yeah, 2015 was 10 years ago. Thank you for reminding me >:(

It would be a stretch to say pre-2015 is old. That would mean Sword Art Online and Jojo parts 1-3 are "oldies" which is off. I have heard that history is over 20 years from the present, and roughly 2005-2010 being the demarcation seems about right for a while. Try reposting this in 2030 or 2035.

The "kids today" would probably disagree, but I'd put the line at about 2012-13, for the time being. That's around the time of the Sword Art Online / Attack on Titan streaming boom, and when HD resolutions became more solidified. A lot of the late-00s/early 10s stuff was either upscaled for broadcast, or produced at mid-level resolutions in the 500p-800p range.

Well the first anime are from the 1910s... so the mid point would be sometime around 1970... so anything from the 60s and before is on the old side of the timeline.

Personally, I divide anime like this:
Before 2000 - old school (The time when the first masterpieces were created)
2001-2015 - my childhood (the happiest memories from watching)
2015-2025 - my present (When my list of viewed items increased from 1k+ 5k+)

In video games it is generally agreed upon that things are considered "retro" after 15 years, so I would consider stuff from 2010 and prior to be "retro" or "old" in the case of Japanese animation. 2015 is still within the time period where its not really "retro" but not really "new" imo

Old anime for me is more 60-90s.

Obviously old is 1920s and such but it was still getting there from it's beginning.

2000s/2010s is more my core. 90s I have briefly jumped into really.

If we are going old as in the retro/vintage status sure..... But I wasn't sure whether to as I see video games and anime differently of how they have gone about trends and other things over time.

2020+ is obvious how it's gone now for 5 years in even though I was mostly watching 2000s and 2010s shows even during the 2014+ start I had. Even around 2017 it wasn't too bad I think. But yeah afterwards it got a bit more clear with isekai these days then past ones or how much ecchi, cute girls doing cute things, idols or other types out there.

The manhwa/manhua adaptations have been ok, depends what you watch. I haven't the action ones only the more comedy/slice of life ones and they are fair. That or reading ecchi manhwa mostly.

90s OVA era was it's own craziness. But yeah many big shows that made them mainstream or pushed barriers make sense for sure even if I haven't seen many as most don't interest me or the ones after don't either but some do.

Like sure Clannad (don't care for the fake out After Story last few episodes, saw that even as a newcomer to anime. XD) Haruhi, Lucky Star and others sure I've seen them. Not K-On though.

If the involved graphics changed a lot, I will say it is an old anime. I don`t think in the last 10 years there was a huge graphical anime update like 4:3 and 16:9 (low res to high res) division were.
But I can accept that for some people anime that is one year old or more is old. It just does not feel old.

The way I see it I feel like I personally sort anime eras into groups like this:
* extremely-old stuff (like, early animation techniques)
* 1980s/1990s stuff
* late 1990s-2000s
* 2010s to now

I might split that last group up but I'm not yet sure when to draw the line.
