Fun movie!
I definitely had an enjoyable time. The pacing is a little quick, but you have to keep in mind that the source material was only a volume long. I think the action scenes in particular were pretty flashy and were choreographed in an entertaining way.

I suppose my only complaint would be that sometimes it'd be a little bit jarring when a character who was important who was made with a 3D model would interact with a side character drawn in 2D, but other than that the visuals delivered.

I found it to be a fine movie, the story was fairly simple and felt a little dragged on at times but it was nice to have quite a bit of focus on the old man. And his interactions with Beelzebub were pretty fun to keep up with. Chief felt like a third-wheeler for most of the time though, lol. But, I must say, Utopia is a banger!

Animation quality wasn't bad at all, I felt. Few jarring moments but it was well done in general, imo.

@jas-samaaa What's that "TV recap"? Do you mean the film was edited into a few TV episodes, or that there's an episode summarising the film?

edit: Thanks!

@Rei_III basically the series currently airing ep 1-6 was the movie adapting the manga, then ep 7 onwards is brand brand new content.

Watched the TV version of this as some others above, straight forward and simple but never dumb or stupid. It seems to adapt the entire thing too, so for the next arc, we are going with original content or from Toriyama's drafts?

As always, impressive CG from Kamikaze Douga, with this definitely being the best from them, atleast out of the ones I have watched. The grainy texture is very nice too.

Watched the TV version as well which had extra contentent added as well. Was a fun watch. Pretty generic stuff but still fun with cool characters and good cg animation.

did they never dub the movie? because I only found the sub.

The english dub of the series was pretty high quality and really good, but it's no sweat atm anyway as I enjoy watching both subbed and dubbed and it also made watching the movie even more a different experience having already seen the entire series.

I just have to remind myself if I ever rewatch the series to watch it subbed or rewatch this to watch it dubbed (if there even is a dub of the movie version...maybe they decided to only dub the series? idunno).

Sand Land is a series that I've always had a soft spot for, it was the first manga I've ever read all the way to completion. Obviously that's because at a single volume it's a lot easier to go through than say something like One Piece. Still, I still recall being pretty shocked and excited when I heard Sand Land was getting an adaption, and so many adaptions too! After this, I still have to go through the TV Series and the video game.

Having only read the manga like twice, and that last re-through being like a decade ago, fair to say I had forgotten quite a bit of this story. I was certain while watching it though that the manga had only one insect man, and the whole floating ship thing didn't seem familiar to me at all, so after watching it I went back to the manga and confirmed that those were both changes from the original manga. I don't really know if anything else was changed, or significantly expanded on besides the climax, I only breezed through the last few chapters, but I will say in this case I definitely preferred how the manga handle things.

I suppose the manga's version might've felt anti-climatic, especially when it comes to Zeu's defeat, but the final act of the movie is where my interest here waned the most. I wouldn't really say it's bad, but nothing here really does that much to engage me. There's no real interesting choreography here, or any interesting strategies, Are's save is probably the only true highlight here and we get that a lot quicker in the manga without all this added fluff. I had actually forgotten about Are's rescue, and most of the details surrounding Zeu's defeat (like Are's shot is what defeats Zeu in the manga, total forgot about that) so I'm not just saying this because I read the manga & knew what was added in, even without knowing what was new and old I still felt like this stuff was kinda boring. I will say I do see the benefit of letting Rao decide whether or not to kill Zeu, feel like it builds off the earlier discussions with the demons, where he dropped the "I've killed people" line when asked about what bad stuff he's done, I just kinda wish it wasn't so boring to get there.

That said, the action wasn't a total flop for me, I really enjoyed the sequence where our trio was up against Are and his tanks. Everyone in the trio got a solid role to play and there was some pretty good strategy involved, like using the sun as sort of camouflage. And besides, this isn't DBZ, the action isn't what anyone's coming here for. The selling point of the series is the charm of all the characters, Zeu doesn't really have any outside of his design, but everyone else has got that patented Toriyama charm that makes this a joy to watch. Especially our leads, particularly Rao & Beelzebub, I love their interactions, and developing bond.

It'll be awhile before I check out the TV show most likely, but I'm definitely looking forward to seeing the new material added if only because it means more time spent with our main trio. Admittedly, I don't really think anymore is needed, Sand Land wraps up pretty well, doesn't feel like their is any need for more but I suppose this will be something I'll deal with when I get to the TV show.

As for the Sand Land movie, 7/10. The same score I gave the manga, which I suppose is still my preference. I totally forgot to mention, visually this movie was alright and the OST I barely noticed. Neither really influenced my score all that much.
