Ah, about the time of New Years.

How I just love the narrative of this show combined with the narrative in this show. The way the girls worry about Rei's well-being feels silly but is also genuine concern as they care about him like family. So damn adorable!

Very sweet and heartwarming episode, It also setup this real cozy mood as the day turns into Christmas here, Kinda fitting. XD

Really love how the sisters came to take Rei away from his house and cared for him during his cold.
Lovely moment when Akari showed Rei his phone and told him he wasn't alone.

Goddamn, I started tearing up when Rei and Akari did. I don't even know why I started tearing up. T.T

Wonder what exactly happened with the sister's father, Rei's right, they only ever mention their mother and grandmother.
That Nikaidou postcard. XD

That ending had me grinning, very nice parallel drawn with those stickers on the cupboard and Rei's memories. That unusual house with bathrooms in the living room and all it's residents make him feel warm and homely. :)

As a halfway mark for this show, this was another solid episode and probably one of the best so far. This consistent quality is why I can safely call this show AOTS even at this halfway mark, and I have every confidence that the second half of the show will only get better and better.

Once again the episode felt too short! I want more!

I was sure Nikaido will send a card to Rei xD

I kind of don't want to see their dad, I have a bad feeling...

The highest points of the show for me are when Rei chills with the Kawamoto family. This episode did not let me down on that. In fact, it was pretty much needed after the previous match and Kyoko showing up. He's slowly feeling more comfy with them, which I love. And I lol'd when Momo got a piece of that hamburger turtle and it fell off the fork before she could eat it.

And I gotta agree with the aunt. Akari's is too good to be stuck at home caring for her sisters and tending to the house all the time. Except for that one shogi player that comes there regularly, I wonder if any other customers have shown interest in her.

God, this show. I just want Rei to be happy. Part of the beauty of this series is that it's all about Rei coming to terms with how beautiful the world around him really is, and every episode feels like he is taking a step further and making progress towards that realization. That ending scene with him falling asleep was so short and simple, but so meaningful. Fantastic episode :)

New Year's episode. Too bad it didn't air next Saturday instead being New Years and all. Rei's memory of his deceased mom and little sister was pretty gut-wrenching. Still, as I predicted last week he realized how foolish he was to think he was alone. Pretty uplifting realization I'd say.

Oh, and Momo is a national treasure of cuteness. XD

Akari is such a great person. Are there really people like Akari in this world? Maybe not, but I hope so.

I've already said it before, but Ai Kayano is a perfect vocal choice for Akari.

Splendid episode.

Nice to see the Kawamoto Sisters again & help take care of Rei.
Akari is the greatest. She would make an amazing mother.

Aunt Misaki is fun. Sweet of her to give Rei money as well.
Hope we see more of her.
That New Years Bento looks delicious.

Great way to end the year.

I found my AOTY. Thanks to Chika Umino and Shaft. Episode 7 was my favourite. I loved some scenery shots from episodes 8,9 and 10 the most (8 and 10, the city and the river while mit Kyouko, episode 9 with matsunaga on the river bank)
Now I just hope it will stay as good for the second half.

I wonder what Kyouko thought about Rei staying in C1 with his win last week and I hope the Kawamoto father issue is not too dark. It's also a wonder that Momo became this monster of cuteness and liveliness despite not having known her parents.

Will they show episode 12 on the 31st or do we have to wait 2 weeks until the next one?

Another peaceful and relaxing good episode!
Poor Rei...he got sick! but Rei is so lucky because he's being taken care of three Kawamoto sisters! Just like family.
The difference of post cards received between Rei and Kawamoto is very big! lol
At lease Rei got 2! One is from Bodoro (Nikaidou) and another one is from the Shogi Chairman!
So Aunty is one of the Managers of the Bar that Akari works for as hostess.
Rei feels like he could not sleep normally on a different house but actually he can because it's like his 2nd home!
4/5.

Poor Rei suffering from a flu from like I said, there are people who care for and love him. I'm glad that the three sisters were there for him. It's so nice to see the uber cute Momo-chan again. I love how she spends time with Rei at the table even though he has a cold.

"GRANDMA! YOUR DAUGHTER IS A DEMON!" LOL!!! Their aunt is awesome. She even gave Rei some pocket money too. I didn't recognize her at first then realized she's the owner of the bar that Akari is working at.

After episode 11, this is hands down AOTY for me. Very few shows caught up my attention this year, but I'm glad we can still find gems like this in such a "bad" year.

On a side note, anyone noticed the Monogatari vibe again in a moment where Akari turns her head? ~The urge to tilt heads, nrghhhh...~

Rei learns some lessons. His foster father still cares about him. The sisters who have helped him the most haves suffered much more than him. At one point there were six in that house and they used the public bath. They had lost people to death just like he did.

This episode, on an emotional level, was pretty powerful. Akari's intuition about Rei being sick was spot on and she did the right thing in taking care and nursing Rei back to full health.

It's also nice that his foster father still cares for him after what happened in the past, so it was good to see Rei call him to let him know about his condition.

Akari's words was powerful when she said "If you weren't here, I would just be cleaning and crying alone". I didn't expect Rei to be the one crying though! ^^

It was funny to see Rei's reaction to the Kawamoto sisters explaining that the living room is also the changing room for the bathroom, which is right next to the living room. His face was priceless! XD

Halfway through the series now, I've really enjoyed what the show has done so far. Handling scenes which are either tense, funny, happy or sad and doing it consistently well is difficult, but I think it's done an excellent job at that.

Great episode overall and I do admit that Akari is almost the perfect wife material for us male users here. =P

after the season is kinda over and this anime is halfway through, i can happily say this was a top 3 anime "of the season" even though it will take next season aswell to finish. 3-4 really amazing, impactful and strong episodes, with all most of the other really calm and chill. overall so far i really like it

9/10 for the first 11 episodes.

I have no idea how painful it must be for Rei everytime he remember his past. He was just a kid when all his family died... even his little sister... I wonder if he sometimes imagines her sister still being alive and playing along with the Kawamoto family.

That ending scene when he look the stickers on the cupboard and his little sister immediately comes to his memory was... so heartbreaking.

The narrative is a whirlwind of emotions this time also, it is in front of the roller coaster, for as events occur during the episodes. It's easy to intuitively perceive the words of the protagonist: there is no better and worse time of festivities, to feel full of joy but also very melancholy or sad, if we do not put ourselves in the conditions in this state of euphoria that pervades these moments of the year . The long break comic, is always a panacea, after the events a little sad that dot almost always the plot. Very pleasant and catchy soundtrack. I wish, now, immediately the next episode.

I also want a small house with inside those three angels!

What a heartwarming episode! So nice of the sisters to help take care of Rei when he's sick. Glad that he knows other people were worried about him too, like his dad. So what happened to the father of the sisters? Still unknown ... and so the new year passes. The portion with their aunt Misaki was pretty funny XD It's nice that Rei could identify why he felt so at ease in their home though. It was a nice feel-good episode, but I don't really have that much to say about it lol. Hopefully next episode packs more of a punch, but these laid-back ones are pretty enjoyable too :3

I liked this episode a lot. The drama is as always a little overdone for me, but it's still kind of heart warming. The way it combined a sick episode with a holiday special was pretty inspired too. On a final note the Aunt's speech about Akari's unattainable sex appeal was really funny and unexpectedly meta.

This episode really hit me. It eased from some of the darkness of last episode and really showed the love that surrounds Rei: the Kawamoto family, his adoptive father, and even Boboro with the postcard.
On the last episode: I think Rei's stepsister, Kyoko, is deciding to screw up Rei's life to show some sort of control over hers. Her behavior, in the past and the present, is abusive. And, like many abusers, she is clever: she understands Rei's weak spots. His guilt over "usurping" the other children in the new household and his eagerness to please.
There is a big chance that the "mystery" surrounding the Kawamoto sisters' father, is that he has shown abusive behavior towards his family in the past. A), why else would his name never be mentioned?, and B), Rei, Akari, and Hinata would have yet another thing in common: living with the scars of abuse.
Another possibility is that the Kawamoto father abandoned them, not being able to face the loss of his wife and the challenge of being a single father. This theme is shown with Rei's match with the alcoholic father. Kyoko implies that he spirals out of control whenever he loses a match, but, as the episode showed, he has decided to give up even during his play. Maybe this is foreshadowing the story with the Kawamoto father.

The truth to be told this series is at its the best when dealing with sisters.
I would gladly sacrifice all shogi tournament and (not really funny) scenes with Bodoro only to have more tim for this kind of slice-of-life.
And Rei even smiled for the first time.

Good end of year episode, it fit the mood of this season pretty well.

Wonder if they would be any subsequent developement where Rei moves to live with them... but probably not, as those scenes are meant to be treasured from viewers point of view and this series is based on contrast.

The flashbacks with Rei's little sister always kill me on the inside. His little sister's death is just so tragic and cruel.

I love the Kawamoto family so much. So much. Rei is very fortunate to have them in his life. After all the tragedy he's been through in his life, he certainly deserves it.
