THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE. ---------------------------------------- flawed but ultimately awesome movie people need to stop going with what everyone else says and learn to appreciate things for what they are. this movie was clearly meant to be animation porn and little else and it succeeded brilliantly at that. |

Very stylized and random, but this show definately brought the awesome. I have to wonder though, what happens to our cast now that they've accidentally blown up the entire planet? That superweapon was very similar to M.D. Device from Ender's Game, anyone catch that? The chain reaction turning an entire planet to plasma, except for some insane reason turned into a bazooka. Because short range is the best way to fire a world-destroying superweapon, sure. It was nice to see the main cast didn't die, but they were the exceptions looks like. Everyone else who was still alive on this planet got wiped out pretty ruthlessly and efficiently, and all because of that damn sword. Ah well, it's not necessarily supposed to make sense, it is after all an anime. An obscure 80's OVA at that. I don't care what the Inorganics say, Rasa-chan has a lovely butt ;p |

Poor Rasa-chan, nobody told her what a lovely butt she had! The plot and the characters really kind of sucked, but of course that's because it was nothing more than an excuse for the animation. Which was fabulous. I really had a good time watching it. |

An uninspired and almost absent story allowing a series of wonderfully dynamic cell-animated sequences occasionally supported by good musics. (all that for incredible action of course). The only downside: the mouth synchronization errors during some scenes. Nothing else matters,it is more than enough to be worth a watch.(actually, I watched it an almost full second time, because I rewinded most sequences) Enjoyment: 5/5 7,5/10 @St0rmblade I didn't even notice that Anno had drawing duties on this production ! I admit that it might feel long when you're not here for the very limited things it offers. (Orange juice? I have no idea what you are talking about! ;) ) What is the second project influenced by that ending by the way? (I might be either too sleepy or too dumb) |

nice animation but lacked stronger SFX, bg music and ending. 5/10+1 for MC's jiggly butt :D |

wish the animation and music weren't wasted on 90% chase scenes. i can only watch people driving away from giant robots for so long |

The part with Arlia and her space magic reminded me of Yamato, honestly. I also think that Nam mentioned Zakus from Gundam as a role-model once. And there was a reference to Nausicaä during the chase (Giant God Warrior vs the insect), almost certainly Anno's doing. Though the glider-riding thing is similar too. The whole style reminded me of Imaishi, to be honest. Something like a precursor of Dead Leaves. In the end, everything turned into orange juice, and the protagonists moved to another plane of existence. I wonder what 2 influential stories it reminds me of. Overall, too long, nonsensical pure action, which wasn't very good in the first place. Voice acting was pretty bad, too. I expected more from this OVA. 5-6/10, I think. ------------ @Rei_III I don't mean that Birth influenced those stories, it just seemed similar in some aspects. The 2nd one I was talking about is an iconic cyberpunk anime (and manga) from the late 1980's. Akira I sure am going at great lengths in order to avoid vague spoilers for people accidentally walking into this thread. Someone in the review section also pointed out that Birth might've been influenced by the techniques of Ichirō Itano. I don't know whether it's possible to verify, but I'm glad I read about him, I've certainly heard about "Itano circus" before. As for the staff, there're other interesting people there besides Anno, like Makoto Kobayashi, who's sure a great mecha designer (as displayed by his work on e.g. Dragon's Heaven), or Yoshinori Kanada, who also worked on Nausicaä as well as Anno. Mahiro Maeda and Joe Hisaishi are credited too. Anime industry is surely a tight place. P.S. Inorganics with one red eye made me think of Zakus again. P.P.S. The story is quite simple, but this is not a defect. And to the animation, IT'S FANTASTIC. It is one of the best animation productions I have ever seen. The ending was quite unexpected, and it also has a nice message. I thought it was fun, I confess I didn't expect much. What makes it even more fun is seeing 1H of Sakuga. |

Like every frame is motion. People are falling, floating, spinning; the landscape revolves around them, crumbling, falling. Because it's basically just a sequence of spectacular set-pieces it does feel a little repetitive after a while, but otherwise it's brilliant. And it definitely feels like a 'mid-life crisis' film. |

so that is the magnum opus of legendary animator Yoshinori Kanada, this OVA is about sakuga or animation showcase so thats why the story is weak and i must say for its time its very well animated lots of camera movement animation and explosions i will give this a high score just for its historical significance in anime |

Sure it looks awesome, 10 of 10 points for art. But I found it to be ... boring. 4 points of 10 for enjoyment, which is also the total score. |

It was an enjoyable film, and as a member of the pretentious ending fandom, I liked it. Just wished the ending had a little foreshadowing. They definitely could've snuck a few hints in the universe exposition scene. |

@St0rmblade Thanks for the link for the production history. Explains a lot about how the OVA ended up the way it is. Bonus trivia. |

Yoshinori Kanada's BIRTH anime, was an fascinating experience to say the least. Opinion wise, the movie is carried by the animation alone, the story gives the characters an added incentive to go to different places. The anime movie starts off with an explosion in outer space, that brings a cosmic McGuffin to the planet of Aqualoid. The premise of this anime alone, is interesting enough, however the narrative seems very wonky. As the anime shifts it's focus between characters a lot, making it feel disjointed, sometimes. |

Aside from that inorganic that said a plant name with each of its attacks this movie was pretty subpar. |

Top-notch animation with some really cool design and ideas. If you love animation this is highly recommended. I give it a 7/10 though just because it's not something I'd want to watch over and over again. There's really little character development or even much narrative. You're sorta just thrown into the action and let me tell you there's plenty of action. By the way, humanity shouldn't create weapons that they would never want to use. |
