I can't even find the 60's versions of Astro Boy or Gigantor, so ill just settle for the 80's. I think personally though 80's anime is my sweet spot. You get to much into the 70's years and things become very basic and just so generic imo in terms of visuals and narratives. I tried watch speed racer and then also Ashito no joe and the animation just turns me way off. Not to mention the mono recorded audio in alot of these shows. Though I did manage to watch Mobile suit gundam, but that was like late 70's.

I love alot of classic anime but i personally think the 80's is when the medium went through a major transformation in terms of concept and design, certainly its also the boon and start of the OVA's and cyber punk or dystopia genre's. The 80's is also when anime started become more adult focused. Anyways.. my point is though Astro and Gigantor were truly iconic during the 60's i am not sure i can handle the basic style and genericness of it. I do appreciate that the 2003 series has much more involved story and seems more formalic rather then episodic. There is still that episodic format, but there is a sense there is a deeper story involved and just more clever characterization and that sort of thing.

I fear that the 80's anime doesn't even have an ending, i think the episode Atlas forever would of been a great ending. Does the 2004 version follow a more overarching story line or is still pretty much episodic for the most part. I don't mind episodic series, i just kind of hope there is some kind of inkling of a core story mixed in with episodes with like a beginning, middle and conclusive end.

Your post on astroboy discussion board caught my attention. I am actually currently watching the 80's version, almost finished with it. I have already read much of the manga. The 80's version didn't even really grasp the concept of some of the more profound moral views and thematic elements of the source material. I was honestly quite disappointed, (Accept uran of course, she was a show stealer) if this is how fans got introduced to tezuka's legacy, then i feel sorry for them. I do plan on watching the 2004 version and i am hoping it improves upon the 80's anime. From what you said, it looks like it does so i am looking forward to that.

Oh and btw i can't believe that poster actually said this lol

As to this episode ... this has been done to death. Big misunderstood bad guy has a good heart, befriends little girl, and then dies

Considering the year this manga came out. If your trying to judge a series or story to reach expectations of what is seen in anime today, then your even more crazy then i thougt
