Your Top 10 anime vs Top 10 none anime animation?

New
Before answering the thread, how similar would you say the shows/movies across both top 10s are?

I'm curious to know if people's taste is similar across the two mediums. I think mine is fairly similar, but I think I'm the exception for that. Most people I have talked to watch idk demon slayer for anime, and then Simpsons for western animation, which could not have less things in common.

Here's mine:

And other animation would be (subject to shuffle since I hadn't thought about it before this).

Now these seem pretty different, but they are surprisingly not:

So what are your top 10s, and how similar/different are they?

@Zarutaku Is there really not?

I haven't seen it but I was under the impression that it's very similar to a lot of the artsy anime that barely anyone talks about, but are surprisingly well liked by the people who have seen them, stuff like these:

@APolygons2 Already saw Nekojiru and Tabibito and skimmed over Phantasmagoria, they aren't mentionably similar.
It's not just about being any artsy avant garde movie, but more about the weird style, plot and overall direction that I haven't seen in any anime yet.

My favorite type of anime are mostly comedy anime, and my favorite non-anime shows are Gravity Falls, South Park, and Spongebob Squarepants, which all have a lot of comedy, so I'd say they are fairly similar.

There's some genre crossover with shows like Generator Rex, but most of my favorite non Japanese animation is stuff like Aqua Teen Hunger Force and South Park. Not much in common between those and my favorite anime.

What about people like me who only watch Anime? I was a kid the last time i watched Western Animation.
All weebs creatures of the galaxy, hear this message. Those of you who listen will not be struck by western animation. You will no longer know hunger, nor pain. Your Anime have come to lead you now. Our strength shall serve as a luminous sun toward which all intelligence may blossom. And the impervious shelter beneath which you will prosper. However, for those who refuse our offer and cling to their western animation ways… For you, there will be great wrath.

@Nurguburu Honestly, I would say you're missing out. If you're an animation fan, there are some INCREADIBLE stuff out there.

Some of which like Arcane or Pantheon have a lot of qualities that are in some of the best anime series out there.

@Lucifrost Generator rex and Ben 10 are pretty shounen-y.

Obviously anime and western animation have their own unique tropes, so you won't find something exactly like demon slayer, the same way you won't find something similar to simpson in anime, but still.

There are definitely shows that are in a similar ballpark, at least relative to simpsons.

I find it more and more difficult to find new animation movies and series I really connect with that aren't anime, especially ever since Disney stopped making good classical fairy tale movies. After I rekindled my passion for anime, I almost completely stopped searching for good western animation.
I didn't have a non-anime list of my favorite movies and series, so I probably forgot some that should have been in there. (On the other hand, if I forgot about them they're probably not my favorites) I wasn't sure if I wanted to include long running shows since their quality just isn't consistent throughout the episodes, but I still watch them selectively and love to go back to my favorite episodes.

TOP 10 anime (my current favorites on MAL)

TOP 10 non-anime animation (also excluding Chinese and Korean animation that follow the MAL definition of anime) (not in order)

(Honorable mentions: The Princess and the Frog (2009), South Park)

This actually feels very similar. Most of it is sci-fi / fantasy with a mix of comedy, romance, action and drama.
There are probably a lot of smaller differences, but some of them may also just be related to Japanese and western styles or a result of me not having watched enough different non-anime animations to fully express my taste.
I did cheat a little bit and replaced The Princess and the Frog with Simpsons after I noticed that I didn't have a non-anime equivalent of modern day slice of life. (if you can call it that) I can generally connect more with how anime is interpreting the genre, but there are definitely some non-anime examples I love as well.

Never heard of Generator Rex, and I don't think Ben 10 is much like Demon Slayer. Unlike the biggest hits in Jump, Ben 10 has no goal or ending and is largely episodic despite its continuity. It's far easier to find comedy anime that resemble The Simpsons.

My manga is very different from everything else, because I discovered smut.

Top 10 anime (listed on MAL and in no order):

- 86 Eighty-Six
- Yuru Camp
- Sora yori mo Tooi Basho
- Hibike! Euphonium Series
- Chihayafuru
- Bokuyava S2
- Made in Abyss
- Sousou no Frieren
- Revue Starlight movie
- Liz to Aoi Tori
(Extended mentions include Violet Evergarden, Sangatsu no Lion, Gurren Lagann, and Oniichan wa Oshimai)

Top 10 animation outside anime (that I can think of):

- Amazing World of Gumball
- Arcane
- Early Spongebob
- How to Train Your Dragons trilogy
- Kung Fu Panda (minus 4th, haven’t watched)
- ATLA / Legend of Korra
- The Incredibles (both movies)
- WALL-E
- Up
- Tom & Jerry

So overall pretty similar? My favorite anime generally fall under the “slice of life/coming of age”-esque category with some exceptions like Made in Abyss and 86 Eighty-Six whereas Outside Animation has a mix between comedy, fantasy, and narratives regarding life and such.

@Lucifrost Have you seen the later parts of ben 10? It starts pretty episodic, but once you get to alien force and ultimate alien there is a huge over arching plot.

@APolygons2
What I saw of Alien Force was episodic too, and I was no longer watching TV by the time Ultimate Alien aired. I imagine most fans of Ben 10 only like certain parts and have not watched as much of it as you have. I guess you could say Ben 10 is like Gundam or Digimon in that it repeatedly reinvented itself as children outgrew the older entries.

Hard to really figure a top 10 because factors of length of prime, height of peak, amount of top/highly enjoyable episodes, how much of the series other episodes should play into the role especially if it's a really long show so there are bound to be decline, franchise vs series, length of each season, length of individual episode and so on which means the top 10 in essence aren't firm placements as criteria changes and the degree of importance/value in certain things change.

For time being, since I'm comparing animation not in MAL database with MAL, I probably need to look at more episodes with enjoyability during prime seasons and length yet try to factor its impact given more of the Western animation consists of long runners. As such it's really hard for me to put any stand alone movies given their limited scope and I have to put more weight in longer running series just because they provided me more opportunities of being highly entertained.

Top 10 under MAL database

Gintama
Hajime no Ippo
FMA+B
JoJo
Legend of Galactic Heroes
Golden Kamuy

Sousou no Frieren
Death Note (first arc, but consists of a fantastic 26 episodes so it's like a 2-cour treatment so I won't put much weight on the later arc)
Kaiji (S1)
Steins;Gate

HM: Ashita no Joe (S2), Vinland Saga (S1), Mob Psycho (S1+S2), Fate/Zero

Top 10 animation outside MAL

South Park
Rick and Morty
Family Guy
Looney Tunes (Foghorn Leghorn segments are peak)
Futurama (before it stopped for several years)
Spongebob (S1-S3)
Megas XLR
Simpsons
Justice League: Flashpoint Paradox (I would put DCAU overall but that's cheating and this movie is peak representation of it which I've also considered BTAS, JL (TV series), Mask of the Phantasm, Son of Batman, Gods and Monsters to be great)
Archer

Of course I haven't ventured into other ones like Castlevania, Into the Spiderverse, Avatar, Invincible, Boondocks so who knows...

Comedy being the main focus outside MAL, but part of the shows that I've enjoyed in MAL database consist of frequent comedic moments while still focusing on the plot. I'm pretty sure I'd get more of a diverse list if there were more thrillers.

I don't really think that those childhood Nickelodeon cartoons from the 90s and early 2000s have much in common with my anime favorites, but who knows :) I haven't really watched much since then and top-10 would be stretching it, but there are at least 3 cartoons that I particularly love and would consider them my favorites even to this day:

1). Aaahh!!! Real Monsters
2). As Told by Ginger
3). Invader Zim

As for seven more spots...I honestly don't know. I also really liked CatDog and Rugrats (the original, obviously), and some other cartoons mentioned by people above, like Hey Arnold! I also remember really enjoying Jackie Chan Adventures, and I was also really into Spider-Man (1994) and X-Men (1992) cartoons. It's hard to compile top-10 out of these! Aside from just putting them all into top-10 due to the lack of strong options lol a lot of the other "cartoons" that I liked to some extent turned out to be anime series :p

Now, as for what I consider my present top-10 anime series:
1). Wolf's Rain (actually takes 2 spots on MAL because of the epilogue OVA, but I obviously count it as one)
2). Digimon Adventure
3). Owari no Seraph
4). Banana Fish
5). Code Geass
6). Ergo Proxy
7). Casshern Sins
8). Psycho-Pass S1
9). Devilman: Crybaby
10. Death Note

Can anyone see any similarities at least between the 3 cartoons and 10 anime series? I know I can't lol maybe there is some similarity with those potential cartoon candidates for top-10, but I have no idea. Even if I stretch it to my top-20 anime series, I'm still not sure if they're similar or not...sorry!
