After this episode i watched a bit of the old anime which handled it so much better. like i had no clue ep 2 crammed 2 seperate fights with Ren together for no reason. They complete throw away a great moment when Ryuunosuke brings Yoh to the hospital. This actually made me so sad cuz i love when delinquent characters are more than "urrrr fight".

it seems clear that this remake only cares about fights and doesn't care to exposition dump for no reason or complete ignore characters outside of said fights. Honestly how am i supposed to be watching 52 episodes of these anime fight compilations. Visual storytelling doesn't exist here.

Even with anna, when she walks in the door she completely dumps all her info and motivation onto You ((who already knew her???)) just for her to later use her powers anyway, which would be the perfect opportunity to just show us her ability... I really hoped it would be better than this

They also completely brush over that they got movie tickets in the mail and went anyway? not knowing how they got it??? its so dumb. When Jun is introduced (with a shot of her tits ofc) Yoh also immediately picks up a random pipe in the middle of the street?? besides this they ruin Ryuunosuke again making him an asshole who doesnt want to give up his sword. In the old anime Ryuu even helped Manta beat up some other bikers and even drove him back to Yoh. What are they even doing with Ryuu??

the world just forces fights to happen and doesnt care about anything else. nothing else matters except who theyre fighting and where theyre gonna fight.

Pretty mediocre, I guess. Both animation and character development seem to be lacking something. I didn't watch the old adaption, so no nostalgia bonus from me, too. The pacing is fast, but not too fast, I guess. Some more explanations and emotions could have been there, though, because the whole thing looks like it had no impact at all on any of the characters. Well, not sure if this will become better or if I should drop it... :/

Well, three episodes is the normal rule for dropping an anime, isn't it? Even if this runs longer than the normal ones, the first three episodes should be able to give a hint on what I have to expect from this series. Anyway, I'll just wait. It's not bad, just a little boring.

I guess they only really skipped Jun Tao's introduction, but cramming so much into one episode just negatively affects the pacing.

Once again, I gotta give props to the first anime. One could argue how much they messed up, when they steered away from the plot progression of the manga and there definitely are a few trivial filler episodes in there, but at the very least they did some excellent padding work when stretching out chapters into anime episode lenght. Manta's heroic moment was built up very nicely there and like I said it should have been 2 episodes, because Manta running for it only to be revealed he went off looking for Rio to borrow his sword is an essential character moment for him and a good cliffhanger to leave the episode on (even if the outcome is pretty predictable).

Jun Tao's introduction was also botched by the pacing and skipping of manga material. First 5 minutes is Anna's introduction and how she's gonna train Yoh Cobra Kai no mercy style, minute 6 she's with him in the cinema.

Yeah, the manga also just skipped straight to the cinema with no build-up, but that was the start of the chapter, not the 6th minute of the episode, lol. Jun Tao appears out of nowhere and is all I'm Ren's sister, btw, here's the star of the movie you just watched, he's coincidentally my zombie slave now.

Eh, I can always patch together a head-canon were the cool moments from the first series also happened in this one and if they get the ending of the manga right I'll be happy, but I really wonder, how much this abridged approach to covering the manga material is bothering newcomers to the franchise.

I agree, I wish I had time to rewatch first anime* but I think I remember in that version Jun Tao becoming good guy and Lee forgiving her were more believable.
