God how the hell do you guys even remember the old anime holy shit, it's been ages since it aired. What it mostly cuts is slice of life padding, which in all honesty I can live with if it means the more plot relevant stuff later on gets good coverage.

First time watcher.

So we got zombie (well, Jiangshi) Bruce Lee (and a Fist of the North Star reference spoken by Tao Jun)

That's a scummy family, murdering a film star/martial arts legend, so they could retain his body as a puppet. Anna's power to call any ghost comes in handy for Yoh.

So the Tao siblings will eventually become allies to Yoh according to the OP? I wonder how Ren will react to Jun having Lee Pyron as a guardian instead of a puppet.

Novels I have read/am reading pending approval: since November 10 2022

I really loved the episode, it's the first episode I can say it surpasses the manga in some way, I didn't really feel Jun's story and this fight in the manga.. and they did it justice in this one episode, even Shamon's incorporation with Anna's technique was awesome..

Animation is still lackluster, it's really a shame we won't be getting sakuga for this one :(
After seeing JJK and other recent anime, this really feels outdated..

Even so, I love each episode till now and this one was my favourite.. they really know how to give impact to these scenes.. Shamon and Pyron's interaction was profound and epic, doing justice to their legendary status which is being conveyed pretty well so far.. the fast pacing also improved on Manta's scene getting the sword

I can't help watching these episodes and getting really hyped and emotional as it goes on, guess I just love SK manga that much.. another great ep for me

I actually liked Anna's intro in this ep more than the old version...which surprised me a little bit. Yoh-kun seems a little less chill in the remake...or is it just me? Seems he gets angrier now. Which is fine, really.

Manta definitely felt like a bro this time...getting beaten so badly just to help Yoh-kun. xD

Did anyone else LOL at "Omae wa mou shinderu"?

I'm still going to follow the old show and this one at the same time...I would say that is the best thing to do for now.

So far in, and the blazing fast pacing isn't rushed at all imo, and it's including all of the relevant information (also, the few things it doesn't are revisited in the future just fine).

It's feeling just like FMAB, hopefully without the adaptation induced plot-holes in that one, going forward.

Shaman King has way less text, so even 8 chapters in one episode is not exactly going to fuck up anything for a while (I'd say until I guess the Patch Village arc, where the old anime, as it's the slow burner part of the manga, took 20 episodes to go through 27 chapters), they can basically speedrun a lot of things without damaging the goods.

4/5 episode, great stuff

The pacing is so rushed that i really can't get into this mess of an anime. They introduce characters and fight and have them change morals about their spirits in 1 episode.

After this episode i watched a bit of the old anime which handled it so much better. like i had no clue ep 2 crammed 2 seperate fights with Ren together for no reason. They complete throw away a great moment when Ryuunosuke brings Yoh to the hospital. This actually made me so sad cuz i love when delinquent characters are more than "urrrr fight".

it seems clear that this remake only cares about fights and doesn't care to exposition dump for no reason or complete ignore characters outside of said fights. Honestly how am i supposed to be watching 52 episodes of these anime fight compilations. Visual storytelling doesn't exist here.

Even with anna, when she walks in the door she completely dumps all her info and motivation onto You ((who already knew her???)) just for her to later use her powers anyway, which would be the perfect opportunity to just show us her ability... I really hoped it would be better than this

They also completely brush over that they got movie tickets in the mail and went anyway? not knowing how they got it??? its so dumb. When Jun is introduced (with a shot of her tits ofc) Yoh also immediately picks up a random pipe in the middle of the street?? besides this they ruin Ryuunosuke again making him an asshole who doesnt want to give up his sword. In the old anime Ryuu even helped Manta beat up some other bikers and even drove him back to Yoh. What are they even doing with Ryuu??

the world just forces fights to happen and doesnt care about anything else. nothing else matters except who theyre fighting and where theyre gonna fight.
Yes the old anime did stuff better so far but, no this anime did not cram 2 fights with yoh vs ren. The old anime just made it 2 fights in the manga yoh vs ren fight was about as short as episode 2. It didn't cram 2 fights it just properly followed the manga.

Another bad episode and there's no sign of it getting better. Let's see how many weeks I could last before dropping this show.

Sorry, but I'm dropping this. The animation is lackluster, the pacing feels too fast, and the worldbuilding and characters seem dull. I'll try to read the manga at some point. Hopefully these are just problems with this adaptation in particular and won't be an issue in the manga.

Nah, the manga is good.

I mean another bad episode more like the only bad episode. Episode 1 and 2 were pretty okay to be honest. Episode 1 was a bit too fast but not bad. episode 2 was almost perfectlly with the manga only skipped them sitting and talking.

Episode 2 was pretty good it cut nothing important and it didn't try to shove a entire volume in one episode like 3 luckily yoh vs ren is short in the manga, or else they would've messed it up.

Pretty mediocre, I guess. Both animation and character development seem to be lacking something. I didn't watch the old adaption, so no nostalgia bonus from me, too. The pacing is fast, but not too fast, I guess. Some more explanations and emotions could have been there, though, because the whole thing looks like it had no impact at all on any of the characters. Well, not sure if this will become better or if I should drop it... :/
It only has 3 Episodes...people need to learn how to wait.

Well, three episodes is the normal rule for dropping an anime, isn't it? Even if this runs longer than the normal ones, the first three episodes should be able to give a hint on what I have to expect from this series. Anyway, I'll just wait. It's not bad, just a little boring.

I understand that, but you can't apply that rule to every Anime. For example Attack on Titan...you can't expect the first 3 episodes to give you a hint on how the other Episodes will be. Shaman King is exactly like that, the first 11 episodes are going to be like the "introduction". Starting frol the 13th episode this Anime is going to be something COMPLETLY different.(since it follows the Manga)

That Tao Jun girl is really hot. Hope to see more of her in future episodes.

Also, why did Pyron seem to forgive Tao Jun at the end? (Didn't he get killed by her parents to become her corpse doll? damn...)

nope, the old one is much more 2000ish composed by Toshiyuki Ōmori, this ost is my Hayashi Yuki, who does the BnHA soundtrack

Maybe this is just me being old ass and having nostalgia goggles but for now I prefer first adaptation. Even relations between Amidamaru and his friend seemed "more real" while in this version are going with everything really fast.

Eh, this was way too much material to put into a single episode. Should have been 2 episodes in my opinion, but obviously they were only given 52 episodes to animate so they had to be economical.

I guess they only really skipped Jun Tao's introduction, but cramming so much into one episode just negatively affects the pacing.

Once again, I gotta give props to the first anime. One could argue how much they messed up, when they steered away from the plot progression of the manga and there definitely are a few trivial filler episodes in there, but at the very least they did some excellent padding work when stretching out chapters into anime episode lenght. Manta's heroic moment was built up very nicely there and like I said it should have been 2 episodes, because Manta running for it only to be revealed he went off looking for Rio to borrow his sword is an essential character moment for him and a good cliffhanger to leave the episode on (even if the outcome is pretty predictable).

Jun Tao's introduction was also botched by the pacing and skipping of manga material. First 5 minutes is Anna's introduction and how she's gonna train Yoh Cobra Kai no mercy style, minute 6 she's with him in the cinema.

Yeah, the manga also just skipped straight to the cinema with no build-up, but that was the start of the chapter, not the 6th minute of the episode, lol. Jun Tao appears out of nowhere and is all I'm Ren's sister, btw, here's the star of the movie you just watched, he's coincidentally my zombie slave now.

Eh, I can always patch together a head-canon were the cool moments from the first series also happened in this one and if they get the ending of the manga right I'll be happy, but I really wonder, how much this abridged approach to covering the manga material is bothering newcomers to the franchise.

I agree, I wish I had time to rewatch first anime* but I think I remember in that version Jun Tao becoming good guy and Lee forgiving her were more believable.

*Is old version available somewhere?

Yep, I feel it's a bit of a curse, that mostly just happened out of convenience. Maybe I'm talking out of my ass, but I just feel like padding out anime series to make them feel more rounded or adding new material, that was originally not in the manga has kinda fell out of fashion. Additionally the anime fandom has always been vocal about filler stuff and not liking shows, that are eventually forced to divert away from the author's vision and do their own thing, because there is no more adaptable material at the animators disposal. I feel like Shaman King (2021) is quite the symptom of animators growing more pragmatic and less creative with how they go about adapting manga into anime.

As far as rewatching the old Shaman King goes, I don't think there is any official or "legal" platform streaming it, but it's not hard to find unofficial uploads of the whole show, if you have no issues with that. Shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes to google it.

This was once again a fast paced episode but everything that was important was still fleshed out so it gets an A in my book.
I don't understand you people who are complaining about the animation, how is it poor? Please tell me what shows you are all watching, because it better be movie level of animation.

To be honest, my thought is mixed on this episode.

The first part was horrible. Anna and Jun presentation was just bad.
However, the second part was somehow better. Yoh vs Jun was terrible, but the 2nd part of the battle where Yoh uses Pyron's master was better for some reason. From the direction to the animation itself.

The weird thing is, most of the episode is about soul, but it feels soulless. Jun development toward the end felt out of nowhere. But it doesn't make the episode less good. This remake is really strange lol.

But it still feels somehow the best episode so far.
Hope for the pace to calm down.

not a fan of antogonists with such background, in fact i hare such writing, they killed him just for that? like breh

and the poor guy is not left alone in the end either making it even worse, it was not her fault coz she was a kid and taught that way yes, but i just cant stand such depiction

maybe one more ep coz i got this far

anna is cocky as hell but making this somewhat watchable as it has been very mid outside of that

just realised this episode is super sped up version of the manga, guess sums up why it felt unbearable as buildup mightve been rushed

also didnt realise fist of north star ref, was it really a ref tho?
