One of the first anime I watched, and I think because it’s a romcom it directly led to me watching love is war which is cool. Once again I think if I watched it now I’d hate it, but because lots of the tropes weren’t clear to me and hadn’t been used up a million times in my mind it was weird and new. Op was catchy.

Same sentiments as the first one, but I think I liked it more because there were more confessions and more drama. I think I’ll probably watch the movie when it gets a dub, and Siena just started reading the manga. Op was a little worse than the first but still catchy, didn’t really love either.

Absolutely NO idea how I stomached the first two seasons. It’s been so long since I watched them that I didn’t have any emotional attachment to the characters and I hardly remembered anything, but for some reason Futaro has black hair and gold eyes now. I also feel like they hardly characterized Yotsuba before this, and then did it all in one big rush to make us like her. It seemed like everyone else kind of had their own goals, so Yotsuba ‘needed’ Futaro the most, but like… that’s not really the point? I feel like other than them meeting when they were younger and the bell kiss they hardly had any fun times or moments where he could fall in love with her, and he didn’t even know who it was that he was having those earlier moments with (unless I’m severely misremembering the series lol which is totally possible) but I feel like she hardly ever did anything? And then just the movie in general with the Rom-com harem stuff that I hate, and them all kissing him individually… it was just too cliche and cheesy, I dunno. Definitely not the show for me, maybe I would have liked it if I’d just seen the show beforehand, but probably not and in my current state I couldn’t have really enjoyed them anyways. Once again, not sure if I’m misremembering, but the whole show seemed like it looked different? (Just looked it up and it’s the same studio as S2 so I dunno what I’m going on about) I can’t wait for someone in my future to talk about how much they love this show and then I’ll be forced to rewatch it because somehow the second season is actually really highly rated… (Finished 5/16/23)

Do you like revenge p***? Do you like wanton bloody violence? Do you like terrible mysteries? Then you’ll love Another! I watched it recently so it’s nice and fresh in my mind, and I simply cannot wait to rant about its terribleness. Now, some amount of suspension of disbelief is required for any show. Realistically this school would have shut down a loooong time ago. You're telling me that there were people connected to class three being killed at random over the course of twenty years, and they let it go on? tHeY tRiEd SwItChInG tHe NaMe To ClAs C tHoUgH… give me a break! They’re going to just close down eventually and open a new school, or parents are gonna stop sending their kids there. bUt ThE cUrSe WaS a SeCrEt… No! There weren’t many many dozens of deaths all related to one class without word getting around! Also the fact that they were looking down on the people who left once the calamity started… people are losing their lives, a few weeks later you're all going to go batshit insane and start murdering people because you don’t want to die, you all should have left! But I digress, no murder means no mystery and no mystery means no anime in the first place, so one can choose to ignore it for the sake of enjoyment. First, the characters: Where are they? I see a few collections of limbs, shambling around and waiting to die a gory and violent death. I feel like I barely got to know most of them, because there was nothing to know. The main character is as one dimensional as it gets. He has a backstory and he was in a coma for one and a half years but he barely ever mentions it and it hardly affects his mindset. And the eyepatch girl’s whole characterization is her lack of it! She could’ve been a great character in my opinion. She’s of course very weird (it’s almost like she’s trying to creep you out…) but that isn’t entirely a bad thing. From a single flashback in the last episodes we know that she used to have emotions before her sister/cousin died, as she can be seen playing with her while she expositions her life story. But I absolutely hate when shows establish sympathy for someone after the fact. We’ve gone a whole show without seeing a speck of emotion from her, and now we’re expected to have a big rush of sympathy and understanding for why she’s been like this, and be heartwarmed when ten minutes later she starts feeling emotion again, it’s all too fast! Then there are the other people, and this is where a lot of my gripes come from. They all seem to be reasonable people, they don’t get a ton of characterization and no one else grows even a little bit, but at least they all make sense and have a general fear of death and desire to solve this mystery, until the last few episodes. I enjoyed the brown haired guy's performance– when he killed the blue haired kid and rushed to the others when he realised he’d messed up, but that’s about it. The Lord of the Flies gets to have a bunch of kids kill each other because its goal first and foremost was to send a message, although it didn’t make for the most believable story (but they were little kids I suppose). These are all high school kids. Fear of death is a powerful thing, but one girl saying that everyone should go kill someone because it’ll stop them from dying shouldn’t be enough for almost every single one of them to pick up a weapon and go on the hunt. It felt like I was watching the Salem witch trials in real time. One of the girls literally said that she would kill the eyepatch girl to test if she was the dead one and if she wasn’t forgotten then oh well (as they did with witches…). Some may find this a harrowing reminder of exactly how much our society has progressed and that anyone can be turned to madness with enough peer pressure, but to me it was just unrealistic and upsetting lunacy. There’s also the “old crone” who randomly wants to murder everyone, if she even counts as a character, Why? She’s shown for a brief moment as the woman who’s kindly let them all stay in the lodge, and then the next moment she has a knife and she’s trying to kill everyone, AND NO EXPLANATION IS EVER GIVEN FOR WHY! That’s plot-convenient unrealistic BS! There was a better way to scare me than ruining my immersion with a random psychopath for no reason when the focus was this scary curse that killed everyone. Unless… and I’m just realising now, she was a part of the curse? But since when could it alter people's minds? Was the whole thing at the end just happening because of the curse and making everyone want to kill everyone else? I suppose it did make the teacher kill himself… everyone’s lunacy would make a lot more sense if it was all caused by the curse, which leads me into my next topic: The Curse. Why did it happen in the first place? Is the first guy that was killed haunting the school for some reason? We never actually do see what’s pulling all the strings, which I loved at first because fear of the unknown is one of the most visceral and in my opinion one of the best kinds of fear, but being left with no definitive answer at all just made it unsatisfying. They did a kind of poor job explaining it at first, and eventually it did make sense, but sometimes it just seems too plot convenient. Like the time when the crazy murder girl got hung, assumedly by the curse because of how improbable it was, right when she was about to kill eyepatch girl. In fact, so many times the show sacrificed realistic characters for the sake of the plot, but the plot isn’t any good without characters! Eyepatch girl’s reasoning for not telling the MC about her cousin didn’t make sense, and the fact that she didn’t tell him his Mom was dead either, he was going to find out eventually, and once they learned how to stop the curse she should have said right away! They also revealed how the assistant teacher was actually his mom the whole time, because it would’ve been almost impossible to guess, and they never tell us that none of the other classes don’t have assistant homeroom teachers. Half the fun of a mystery comes from trying to solve it, but being told at the end that it was basically impossible for us to solve anyways makes it no fun. The ending was also terrible! Like, once they realise that they can’t stop the curse for good they should just shut everything down not let everyone continue to die. This reasoning is actually dragging on a lot though so I think I’ll cut it kind of short. I liked the opening and ALI Project, they did the Code Geass endings and I could tell it was them from the first second of the song. They have that weirdly distinctive synth instrument that I’ve only ever heard in their songs. I actually didn’t hate the beginning of the anime and most of the time I try not to let a show’s ending impact how much I enjoyed everything before, but even before it I was starting to see cracks and implausibilities, and the ending is especially important when the show is so short or when it’s a mystery show because that’s what it’s all been building up to, anyways… I give it a 4. (If I didn’t mention, I liked a lot of the beginning…)
[Problem is, the hardest part of mysteries, or most series in general, is ending them in a satisfying and clever way. It's a lot easier to make the clues in a mystery than it is to tie them together, so a lot more weight has to be given to the ending. It also eliminates lots of rewatch value knowing that most of it is leading to nothing. -added 9/18/24]

I had Korosensei as one of my favourite characters for a long time. His drive to teach was inspiring, and for a while I even wanted to be a teacher. Nagisa’s special power was a little weird, but I absolutely adored Karma and his character progression. There were so many characters that it kind of got hard to keep track of them all, and they clearly wanted to give each of them a bunch of characterisation but I don’t think it really worked. Overall a great show, I definitely cried when he died. The first and last openings were pretty catchy! It looks like they’re all stabbing someone lol

Lot’s of the jokes didn’t age amazingly well, but around the end I started getting tired of it. The sexual jokes were never funny, nor were the ones about that blue haired girl and her boyfriend. None of the characters really changed at all, and none of the romance progressed. Overall one would think it would just be absolutely terrible, riddled with unfunny tropes (which it was) and unfunny. I was pretty much indifferent for the last bit of the series, the comedy got replaced by action and story which was never very good in the first place and it was all just a slideshow, but I actually enjoyed the first part a bit and laughed a few times, even if the show kind of overstayed its welcome in my “watching”. Not terrible, but not anything to write home about, I’d put it in the very low high 5s, just enough to make it not completely indifferent but not something I’d recommend. The opening was pretty catchy, and I added it to my playlist, but it wasn’t one of the ones that got crazy stuck in my head.

This was another one of the shows that I watched more spread out than I would have liked, but there's a good reason for it. I definitely could have been more invested in the characters if I’d had more grasp of what was going on. The only problem was that IT WAS SO SLOW!!! Half the time the plot wasn’t moving at all, and I’m all for developing characters or learning more about them, but in a show so focused on drama between people it was few and far between. AND THEN THEY PUT IN FILLER!!! In an already slow show, where I was just praying that the episode would go a little faster, they put in three or four episodes of filler. After episode 18 though, it just suddenly drastically improved, and the last episode although being very different from everything before it was a nice break from the sudden burst of drama. I cried a little for some reason when Ro was crying, even though I didn’t like her at all and she barely got characterised. They also didn’t explain the magic at all, but that wasn’t the focus of the show even a little bit. I like all the characters, even if around the end it started getting a little harem-y. Nagisa is definitely just the “ideal” woman, or at least she seemed like that at first, she’s very shy and they emphasize a lot that she needs someone to depend on, but that isn’t inherently bad. In the end she did do the whole play thing on her own, but in the last episode she tried to be a little more assertive and it just failed miserably so I’m not sure if she’s actually developed any courage. If you can’t tell, I remember the last episodes a lot better than everything else XD. I’m excited to watch Afterstory… and I’m worried I’m gonna cry. Not sure if I could recommend this series to someone just because of this first season, unless the next one is REALLY good, which it might be. I saw glimpses of emotion, but all of the slogging meant it got lost, and I can’t justify calling it ‘good’ where 18 out of the 23 episodes were as hard to watch as they were. The Op was actually nice and in my playlist, but the ed kind of annoyed me as cute as it was. (Finished 5/9/23)

I absolutely love Code Geass. I didn’t love the side characters in the first season, and Euphie killing all those people was way too plot convenient and there weren’t any consequences for Lelouche’s non-preparedness really. They also just solved his whole Geass not working thing immediately with the lenses which was sad, and I don’t really love mechas. Other than those though, I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. I love the idea of Lelouch risking everything for Nunnaly and the things he got up to were well planned most of the time and extremely enjoyable to watch unfold. Obviously COLORS is an amazing opening, but I liked the Eds more at first and still kinda do. Soundtrack was superb, and I still watch good clips from the anime sometimes.

R2 was the culmination of the first season. Everything’s scale grew much grander and it was amazing watching him conquer the world and get revenge on the people who wronged him. It was kind of weird how long they thought Lelouch’s memories hadn’t returned though, and that they didn’t tell the people that encountered him the first time anything about his powers. I started disliking him around the end because he started seemingly being evil, but when he was with Nunnally and said that she had the same plan as him I realised what he was doing. Honestly in my opinion it had the best ending of any anime I’ve ever seen and I still remember loving it as much as when I first watched it even though it’s been a while. The soundtrack was beautiful and Colors and O2 are classics for a reason. I absolutely loved this 25 episode long series, the ending was so sad though! Jokes aside… This series should have been 25 episodes long. I hated the bratty blonde kid and his dramatic chocolate bites and the other one and how unfeeling he was. Yes they were supposed to be the two halves of L and so he was supposed to have defeated him in spirit but I don’t care it's not the same! Why was it so grand too… the first part was about two geniuses engaged in an exciting battle of wits, it was magical watching it unfold and how little resources L and Light needed. In the second part there were kidnappings and missile launches… that wasn’t what Death Note was supposed to be! And he was defeated by hecking replacing pages in the death note, so dumb! It makes me sad :( The first opening and ending were great, some people say they like the second op better but I think I just don’t like heavy metal.

34 Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood… The ending wasn’t amazing (just the fight with the big bad, everything else, especially the last episode, was great) and the beginning was a little rushed and seemed childish at first. Those were its flaws. It is, in my humble opinion, the best told shounen of all time and probably a tie for the best anime of all time. It was magical once you got into the thick of it. There was no fanservice (except for the one, brief, barely-even-fanservice Winry scene) and the romances were wholesome and realistic. The adult characters were likeable and mature, every character could have been a main character. The female leads were strong and contributed to the plot, I even loved all of the villains! They should have even put less focus on the main characters because of how amazing everyone else was! And the main characterrrrs! I loved Ed and his romance and how driven he was to get Al’s and his own body back, but not at the expense of anyone else. The animation and fights were well thought out, the plot all intertwined complexly and the twists and mysteries were great. The sad parts made me cry and the characters' inner struggles were just beautiful to watch get dissected. It did seem like they were kind of afraid to kill more characters though, and it was a little weird that the Elric brothers didn’t just use a philosophers stone to get their bodies back, but I understand the reasoning. It made me really happy when Hawkeye actually did use the philosopher's stone, and how he didn’t give in to his revenge! Every opening was an absolute banger, but I especially liked Ops 1,2, and 5. The first and last endings were also perfect. I might even read the manga once I forget what happened, and the light novels, it was just perfect.

I was too caught up noticing all the symbolism to worry about the romance and magic that was unfolding. Wasn’t anything great, the borderline… or rather, just plain ol’ sexual harassment wasn’t fun to watch, but the comedy was good over half the time. I liked it more around the very end, and the characters were likeable, I especially liked the Ice girl though and her voice actor (although apparently very Niche…) sounded very familiar, couldn’t place it though. The jokes were a little samey at times, just the Uncle being an idiot, and sometimes it was frustrating, but ultimately I enjoyed watching it. The opening was good and catchy, except like lots of things, I liked everything else in the song more than the chorus. There wasn’t much substance to the story. It seemed like it didn’t really go anywhere, every character is exactly the same as when he started, and he hasn’t reeeally gotten closer to escaping the world. (Finished 4/29/23)

It was… well it was enjoyable to watch for most of the time. It was hardly a parody though, or… maybe it was? It didn’t really poke fun of tropes, but it took lots of them to extremes which is a form of satire in a way… it’s kind of hard to tell if the author wrote this while looking at other dumb isekais or if he thought he was making the coolest stuff in the world. But honestly, when it was exaggerating troped it was fun. Around the end it started getting serious about the politics and it was hard to keep up with (especially because I didn’t really care about it) and it got less fun, but I finished it. Not anything to write home about. There was lots more anime BP in the first part that I could laugh at, but I think in the end with twenty episodes I got tired of watching him be all edgy. The Op was by OxT, which is kind of how I found out about the show and it’s pretty good, I did end up enjoying the show but not enough to recommend it or rewatch it. (Finished 5/9/23)

I actually gave FMAB a 1 after watching this just so that it would stay in first place (this was before I had watched FMAB…) but ultimately I think that they were trying to accomplish different things and that they’re both amazing in their own ways. Finally watching Shirogane confess was great and getting to know Hayasaka more (and come to the conclusion she’s best) was the ride of a lifetime. There’s a reason I rewatched this show two times XD. The after credits scene with them holding hands was a little too lewd for me but overall it was pretty good. The opening and ending were amazing as well. (Although in actuality the hand holding was a little weird because in the manga I thought they didn’t do it until they kissed as a normal couple (which was honestly somehow more amazing than that epic confession, I’m reading the spin-off manga too btw…)) It was also insanely funny, heartwarming, and wholesome. Most of the time I have less to say about the shows I love lol (The OST of all of love is war is also amazing and has some killer songs)

I’m almost upset at myself for even watching the whole thing. I’ll admit it kept me a little interested, but I quickly began to hate all the characters and the meaningless drama. I suppose I might as well put down all my gripes: The MC is just terrible, he has basically no good traits, which wouldn’t be bad if he grew somehow but he continues to make bad decisions. It might also be good if there were some kind of consequences for his actions, but all that ever happens is the girls fall deeper and deeper in love with him. The scenes with MC bein gross were also… well gross. The main girl is so perfect it’s almost painful to watch, and I hate her for liking the MC (although I do have a thing for tsunderes, that doesn’t surpass my hatred for her unfortunately…). Everyone seems to hate his blondie ex because she’s just such a terrible person, but I only thought she was dumb. Ya what she does is bad but there’s not even a drop of nuance, and then I started hating her around the end because she falls in love again with the MC. The heartbeat girl makes absolutely no sense, why did MC even get her heartbeat up in the first place? And I hate her because she falls in love with him because of a meaningless and nonsensical gimmick. I also remember absolutely hating the scene where Ms. Tsundere (literally forget everyone's names…) is talking about how much she trusts MC and then it keeps cutting to him kissing his ex as if it’s supposed to be this terrible thing. Yes it’s bad that blondie is kissing someone who she thinks has a GF, but she was actually trying to help him get back together with her! They’re framing it as if he’s betraying her but it's exactly what she wants. Then there’s the shy girl… okay I do have a serious thing for shy girls and she’s just too cute please help me. Maybe it’s just because she didn’t fall in love with him this season? But I’m sure even she will eventually succumb to MC’s lack of charm. I didn’t rate it even lower though because it was so bad that it was almost interesting to watch, it reminds me exactly how bad a “romcom” can be, and it makes me appreciate good ones even more. It’s almost like a greasy burger that you bite into once and then before you know it it’s already been eaten and you're in the bathroom throwing up. The Op was actually really catchy and I liked it, and the Ed was ok (I liked the beginning of it but basically everything else was a dud…)

I hated all the characters… Tanjiro is a goody two shoes, Nezuko is… well Nezuko’s okay but I have a soft spot for shy girls, the yellow one was a baby who forgot when he killed people, and the pig head one was just dumb. The whole flashback on the demon’s life to make them seem sympathetic is the dumbest thing too! You establish sympathy BEFORE you show how they’ve become corrupted. They do it all in one flash after showing all the things they’ve done and it just seems like they’re trying to backtrack and say that it was actually all fine that they did all those terrible things. The reason I couldn’t give it anything below a 5 though is because… well you know why. Most of the time I don’t really like action, it gets very samey over time, but with the action in Demon Slayer I was just mesmerised. Every movement seemed choreographed and was smoother than butter and the part where he killed the spidery guy was just absolutely amazing. The humour was also misplaced and unfunny… but the op was good (even though I skipped it while watching it), and there’s a reason it’s the most popular anime song.

It got much better in the second half, at first it just seemed different for some reason, maybe it was the more constant jokes, or the random cutaways like in Konosuba even though they were kind of out of place, or maybe it really was just that at first Megumin seemed like a jerk, and she had an actual story ark. You genuinely feel like this could be a group of four friends with the way they bounce off of and tease each other. The first opening and endings are pretty cute too. Although the fanservice can get a little extreme at times (and I had to skip a few parts) it was worth it just for the comedy gold. I hardly remember exactly what happened but I remember almost dropping it because it got so boring. They also hardly developed the magic system and although they were fighting in teams a lot more often and the complexity was expanding they never really established well how the spells work. The OP was the same as the first one which I was glad about, and I liked this ED a little more than the first one, though I remember every time I heard this or the first ED my mouth would start watering. A must watch! I loved all the characters, they’re a little childish right now but that’s changing. They’ve been through a lot by the end and I almost wish they were a little discouraged, but it’s also kind of inspiring to see how optimistic they are. I probably could have even gone on with just Reg and Riko a bit longer because of how much I like them both, but Nanachi is a welcome addition and honestly maybe even my favourite. They progressed through the abyss very quickly, and the climax was kind of all over the place, but it was still incredibly enjoyable. The art was consistently phenomenal. The simple character designs fit almost weirdly well into the intricate landscapes. Every background, especially those expansive shots to show exactly how far they’ve come, fill me with wonder and awe. This show seems to be all about the pursuit of truth and our fascination with the unknown, and these characters stand out nicely in contrast to the glory of the abyss. The music… where do I even start. The opening may honestly be my favourite anime opening ever. I thought FMAB would forever hold that title, but the song filled me with a feeling of adventure, and it’s so catchy. I’ve listened to the opening in full dozens of times and I’m still not tired of it. The ending song was also very cute, and it perfectly opposed the opening in its mood. Every instrumental piece was also amazing, even the official instrumental version of the opening, while distinctly lacking the catchy chorus, highlighted how much effort was put into the instrumentals. The OST never overpowered the characters’ dialogue or other sound effects, and it always fit perfectly, I’ll definitely be adding many of the songs into my playlist. I just need to go watch the movies and the second season now… I was kind of putting off finishing the last episode of this show for some reason and I wish I hadn’t. I was waiting for the “perfect moment” (and I had lots of other shows to watch) but I think I would’ve enjoyed it, and other shows more, if I watched them in one go. I need to cut down on the number of serious shows I’m watching at any given time…

Wow, it was nearly perfect. I don’t love those super long flashbacks when a character dies, but it was kind of necessary because she was such a new character. Especially later in the movie was absolutely fantastic and the ending was great, even if sometimes the animation looked choppy, but that was never where this anime shined. The bright colours of the explosions looked really nice in contrast to all the darkness, and the kind of sketchy blackness that enveloped Reg when he got all evil looked cool. The OST was also characteristically beautiful, and the song that played during the credits was crazy good, it’s haunting strings and echoey vocals, chef’s kiss. I watched the beginning of the movie in like two chunks because I got a little tired of it, but then I watched the last half straight through because it was so great. The overall twists were nice too, that the Whistles are made of bone and things. I kind of wish they’d talked more about the “cartridges” before the movie though to set up more mystery around it, they had to flashback to that guy from the beginning talking about them. Amazing continuation of the series. (Finished 5/13/23) [Oh my goodness it’s literally the next day and I’m such an idiot. It is NOT THAT hard to not have sex with someone. THEY WERE SECOND COUSINS. They always pretended he was getting character development, but turns out he never did. I almost gave this a 7. The manga was cut very short, and I thought about rating it as if it was just the beginning of a series. The beginning was actually pretty good comedy, it wasn’t amazing so I couldn’t really have given it an 8 but I laughed a few times. The animation was pretty refreshing (almost like loony tunes…), and I don’t mean MC’s “man mode” as I feel it got a little overused, I mean the wildly exaggerated emotions and wacky movement, it was just fun to watch. As the series got more serious though, that kind of disappeared. I actually didn’t like the bigger blonde very much. I get that being attractive can have its own drawbacks, and I liked how he seemed much more sure of himself before he met the stalker lady from the little glimpse of his past we saw, but all of the girls constantly fawning over him was just unrealistic and it made me kind of upset at first how upset he was about it. I don’t remember very many specific scenes, so maybe it was just his anxiety playing tricks on him and all the girls weren’t actually just talking about him, but I’m pretty sure wherever he went there actually were just a bunch of people immediately commenting on him, not that I’d have much experience with what being attractive is like… XD I liked most of the other characters though! That’s why it made me kind of sad. I was heartwarmed by his relationship with MC, but they had to sacrifice all of the other characters’ development for the sake of time. The sudden cut to drama was also very jarring, it had been a very lighthearted comedy (although obviously heartbreak was probably going to come at some point) and then all of a sudden very serious things were happening (and not as a result of the wizards magic… her throwing away his wand was also just a little too plot convenient and they kind of glossed over it). Once again, this was probably due to time constraints. The portrayal of the yandere stalker was a nice break! (Even though it came in a comedy about a girl who’s real life is turned into a dating sim by a tiny wizard man… woman… person) I loved that they showed her homelife, and that her craziness affected more people than just her obsession. When it was in full drama mode I almost wished that she had just full on stabbed MC rather than just a scratch, that would have been even more shocking, but honestly that might have been too much, I guess I do keep saying this was supposed to be a lighthearted comedy. Most of the time I hate plot convenient bull poop that just happens to the MCs in Romcoms but at least here it had some kind of explanation, and it was mostly not sexual which was also nice, it was cool seeing a protagonist that wasn’t completely thirsty or oblivious. ALSO, I swear I came up with an idea so similar to this a few years ago before I started actually writing anything. I even remember coming up with the opening scene, something about a girl being confessed to and then she has to pretend that she misheard, and then the other person just repeats it and *comedy* ensues. It’s kind of veered from a review at this point but I guess this is all just for looking back on… the Op was pretty nice and it got more catchy as time went on. The ed was… well it kind of confused me, what trick was I falling for?? (I also liked that they put a restraining order on the yandere, they never seem to do that and I was literally saying to my screen “just get a restraining order!” and then… they actually did… they’re listening…) (Dunno if I said this, I actually did like lots of the comedy, but eventually it got pretty serious and I stopped liking the comedy as much)

It had so much potential! I’ve heard from manga readers that that scene at the beginning wasn’t in the manga, and it would have added so much more mystery to everything. I liked everything and it could’ve been an 8 up until the last episodes where everything kind of fell apart. (Once again- it’s been a while since I watched this and I would have had a lot more to say if I wrote this right after) I think it didn’t resonate well enough with me because I’ve never been depressed? But it made me quite depressed, which is an accomplishment. People always said that Shinji was too much of a crybaby, and I kind of understand it. From what I remember most of the symbolism made sense and there were some interesting sentiments, as much as I disagree with Nihilism. I think I’ll need to rewatch it at some point. Oh my HECKING GOODNESS you should have asked me what I thought about this anime after I watched it. I wrote up a whole review about how much I hated it and all the gripes I had on MAL but I ended up just deleting everything I wrote without writing it down anywhere, oh the sorrow of lost media! I dropped it a few episodes in and then picked it up again when I saw how high the MAL score was, but I think my initial impression may have tainted the show a little bit. (I stopped watching at first where they got attacked by those weird sewer tongue shadow things). Maybe I went into it with the wrong mindset. At first it seemed like it was going to be an amazing mystery-horror-suspense anime, but it quickly devolved into a bad shounen anime. I quickly started hating the characters, Shinpei who claims to see the big picture runs after a girl who he knows is dead EVEN THOUGH IT’S BEEN ESTABLISHED THAT THERE ARE MURDEROUS DOPPLEGANGERS OF DEAD PEOPLE GOING AROUND AND MURDERING PEOPLE. I remember making a whole list of all of the stupid things he did and hating him for it. Incest is not wincest, even if it’s “step-incest”, and I hated the entire sublot between the darker skinned girl and Shinpei. In fact I hated her character in general! Although it pains me to say I’ve forgotten many specific examples and character traits. I actually kind of liked the blonde, but I think eventually her plot armoriness became too much to bear? I remember thinking in the beginning how dumb it was to give away the villain right away (because I was expecting a mystery still) and how un-terrifying he was. Also, THE FACT THAT HE KNEW SHINPEI WOULD COME BACK TO LIFE IF HE GOT KILLED, BUT HE DIDN’T KILL HIS ONLY ACCOMPLICE LEFT IMMEDIATELY AND LET THEM LIVE LONG ENOUGH TO HAVE A CONVERSATION ABOUT HOW SHE SHOULD KILL HIM WHY THE HECK DID ALL THE SHADOWS JUST GO AROUND HER! There was also the fact that they just immediately solved the problem of not being able to tell between real people and shadows, because if you step on their shadows and their evil then their shadows will move. And then there were nail guns and giant hammers and bad action and I think I remember the villain having basically no nuance. I do like the Op but even though my feelings about the show have faded I still feel dread at seeing them portrayed in any positive light, like they do in the Op.

Seems like they had some trouble with consistent tone. At first they tried to be funny (although I didn’t find the comedy particularly funny in the first place) and then around the end the whiplash from switching between dramatic fights, scenes where I’m supposed to cry, and bad comedy was astounding. It seems like the story could actually go places though! Right now it’s kind of just an ad for the LN but if they make more seasons and expand upon the loose threads well I think it could end up pretty good. Didn’t like it, didn’t actively hate it, so it’s a 5. I’ve also grown to particularly dislike unnecessarily overpowered protagonists, but maybe there's a good reason for it in this anime. It seems to be trending towards just dumb fanservice so I’m stopping here. The CGI was terrible, in fact some people say that they made it that bad on purpose to be funny, or that it’s some kind of parody, but this isn’t a parody anime. They aren’t subverting any tropes, because it’s a very new concept. The idea for the anime is actually kind of interesting, starting a religion in a world with no concept of it… although you kind of wonder how much it actually is a religion if the God is right there and able to perform miracles, there’s hardly any faith involved. I didn’t laugh once at any of the terrible jokes, and the “gag character” is just dumb and unfunny. The MC is also just plain unlikable and doesn’t seem to have any character. The tactics he’s using to convert people to his religion are also rather dubious, and as I take religion very seriously it kind of pains me to watch him treat it like just some kind of game, and he implies that he’s just using all the tactics that actual religions use. They also constantly cut to an 8-bit filter with little animation at any point where a single shred of animation might be needed, it’s all just obviously a ploy to try and deal with the horrifically low budget they must’ve rightfully been given for this show. There’s a cute loli though..? That’s about it… I kind of like the ‘God’ but not enough to offset how terrible the supporting cast is, drawn incessantly to the MC for no reason, and the OP is okay, but not anything worth choosing to listen to. If anyone said they might watch this I would actively recommend they don’t. They also went deadly serious at times for no reason, and they seem to be trying to engage me with the dumb plot, (how did they build all those things at the end of episode three…) but the show’s so dumb that it’s all just useless. The last episode I watched kind of upset my mood after I finished Dawn Of The Deep Soul, so maybe I’m slightly biased because I’ve got amazing anime on the brain. (Dropped 5/13/23)

186 Sekai Saikou no Ansatsusha, Isekai Kizoku ni Tensei suru
(Dropped) The quote “So I’ll be taking down a non-standard monster with my ‘standard’ abilities” pretty much sums up the series (Note those air apostrophes are my own touch). First, there were no monsters in this series. This was a bad translation (or weird writing) and his dialogue was consistently stiff and uninteresting. There was also the scene where he just had to inspect his servant in the nude as a checkup, but he’s an old man! They always seem to have these in this kind of show and play it off as the one person caring for the other, but it’s just darn creepy. She has no idea how old he is (and the fact that she always wakes him up saying she might need to get “mischievous” is just weird, they had the same kind of unnecessary examination scene in Assassin’s Pride). It could have been interesting given the fact that he was an assassin in his last life, but he was just given completely overpowered skills from the get go, (which is why that beginning quote is so dumb) and he was born into a family of assassins, rather than being reincarnated all of this could have just happened to a normal boy and then the Goddess could have told him he needed to assassinate the hero. I only reached episode 6, where there was suddenly an alternate plotline, completely jarring, about a group of children who are involved in sex trafficking. There’s no mystery or investigation, it’s just a bunch of kinda sad scenes of children being abused (when everything up to this point had been lighthearted…) and then the main guy shows up and saves them. I’ve always hated such one dimensional villains, and it’s almost impossible to give redeeming qualities to sex traffickers and rapists so they always just end up flat. (I’m sure there would be some way to give them depth but in this show they didn’t). I don’t like the main character and he’s just needlessly cruel from what I remember, very disappointed in the show :(
