Synopsis

Anzu Hoshino needs only three things in her life: video games, chocolate, and her beloved cat. Unlike other high school girls, Anzu has no time for or interest in romance. But as she begins playing a poorly programmed 3D otome game, a bizarre flying wizard named Riri emerges from the screen and calls Anzu "subject one," the first person who will experience a dating game harem storyline in real life.

Despite Anzu's fiery protests, Riri confiscates her favorite things to force her to focus on love. Riri orchestrates a series of unlucky incidents and romantic cliches that lead her to meet Tsukasa Kazuki, one of the most attractive boys in her school. Still enraged, Anzu is adamant about resisting Tsukasa's charm. As all the ridiculous fabricated scenarios help Anzu warm up to Tsukasa's pleasant nature, Riri throws other stereotypical pretty boys her way—and avoiding romance quickly becomes almost impossible.

What an absolute banger of an anime.

The heroine is so refreshing and relatable - while others around her spend a lot of their time pursuing romance, she just prefers spending her time with what she loves: mainly, playing games, hanging with her beloved cat and eating chocolates.

That is until one day a “wizard” ropes her into a game, and forces her into romantic encounters after romantic encounters.

It was the summer of 2022 and I was scrolling down and checking out which movies and shows are coming to Netflix soon. That was where I came across this anime called Romantic Killer. Never heard about the anime before, didn't see it in any of the seasonal charts, and didn't even know it's based on a manga. I like comedy. I like romance. I like romantic comedies. I also even like spontaneous anime that doesn't take itself too seriously, such as Gintama.

That said, I didn't feel that this anime does very well in any of these regards. For the comedy, it simply tries way, way, waaaaay too hard to land a joke and attempts to do so far too often. Even worse, the rate that it lands a successful attempt at humor is probably 5% of the time.
