Beck

Fourteen-year-old Yukio "Koyuki" Tanaka is a dispirited young boy with no goals in life. However, this all changes when Koyuki saves a strange-looking dog named Beck from being harassed by a group of local kids. The dog's owner, 16-year-old Ryuusuke "Ray" Minami, is an emerging guitarist and the former member of a popular rock band.

After Koyuki meets Ray again in a diner, the older boy leads him to his former band's meeting place and dazzles Koyuki with his amazing guitar skills. Slowly becoming interested in the glamour of western rock culture, Koyuki decides to start playing the guitar while helping Ray achieve his dream of leading the ultimate rock band. Together with Ray's younger sister Maho and a few other members, the two boys launch their career into the world of rock by forming a band called BECK. Beck follows the group's struggles and successes as they spread their fame across Japan.

It's the best SOL music drama romance anime, it's truly a masterpiece, take my word for it, I have watched so many anime and not many can keep you hooked till the end.

Don't worry about any perception you have about music-themed anime whether you have liked it or not before because this anime is not just about music there is a lot more to it, definitely beautiful songs, lyrics, and a great band but along with that, you can see old but quite soothing animation, a slice of romance(slow spaced, hide and seek kind of romance if you know what I mean) and a ... slice of comedy too(good one-liners at the end of scenes). Though not your regular romance or comedy anime, it's a little different, I can't explain it as I don't want to spoil the storyline for you. Just watch the first few episodes, and you might binge-watch the whole anime lol but if you want to reaaaaaallllyyyyy enjoy anime take your time you will get emotionally invested in this one, don't read many reviews they might spoil some parts or endings for you which may ruin your experience.

You won't regret watching it go for it.

Mixed Feelings

After finishing watching Nana and being a quite disappointed, this anime showed up as a recommendation. I decided to give it a chance, hoping it would be a good anime about music, but unfortunately, I can't say it was.
In fact, it was a quite mediocre, and that is the main problem with this anime: it is mediocre. The idea was good, a protagonist who seeks something to identify with and finds the music. The plot explores the journey to this dream, as well with some mystery, like the ones behind Beck (the dog) and the guitar Lucille. However, everything is executed in a very basic ... way, and the points that could have been more interesting are left behind.
There are some points I like to mention:
• The animation is quite simple, but that doesn't bother me at all, it’s pretty solid.
• The songs are quite bad, which is really harmful for the anime, because if a story is about music, this has to do be the main point.
• I can't see any charisma in the protagonist, Koyuki; he's boring and his songs are also boring, every once and while during the show, some characters say he's different, but I couldn't see what's so unique about him
• Finally, about the band, a thing that got me thinking is, what would Beck's musical style be? I don't know, since they didn't even have their own style, every member seems disconnected from another. I also couldn't really cheer for the band's success because there is nothing really promising about it that would even justify the other characters' enthusiasm for them. It’s constantly said that they have a unique quality. What is that quality? I don´t know.
Anyway, it wasn't a story that captivated me that much. However, despite everything, for those who really like anime about music, might enjoy this one. It is well-rated on MAL (although I don't understand why the score is so high) so won´t classify as "Not recommend," but as "Mixed feelings." I feel like simply it wasn't my taste. If I were to recommend a good anime about music and that stuff, I would go with Detroit Metal City (that is also incredibly funny).

Just finished this series on a friend's recommendation. And to be completely honest, I did not find it enjoyable in the slightest. I've seen many series in my time, and this felt incredibly below average. None of the characters were at all engaging or interesting. The story dragged incredibly long very early into the anime. The love interests were very uninspired and uninteresting. And the band members all kinda sucked. Visually, I don't think it's held up well from the early 2000's (as someone who really enjoys this era) and as for the characters: No one really had any personality besides the singer (not koyuki), ... but he was really annoying. And as for Koyuki, he did not win me over whatsoever.


Almost all of the plot points he was involved in just felt empty and forced, which I guess is why it felt like it dragged- and the ending left a lot to be desired, along with just a bunch of confusion that felt like in the end it was all just overly dramatic for the sake of being dramatic. I found no parts that were meant to be funny, Funny- and no parts that were meant to be heartwarming, interesting. Can't really decide who I hated more- Koyuki or Maho. Both of them just really, really sucked. I would struggle to find things that I could recommend LESS to anyone over this. I'm sure the manga is more charming, but as an anime- this was a dud.
