Synopsis

Since the death of his parents, Shinpei Ajiro had lived with the Kofune family and their two daughters—Mio and Ushio. Although he then left his home island to continue his education in Tokyo, Shinpei returns after Ushio tragically drowns during the attempted rescue of a little girl. During the funeral, his best friend informs him about bruises found around Ushio's neck, casting doubt over the cause of her death.

Suspecting a murder has taken place, Shinpei reevaluates recent events, but strange incidents only continue to transpire. Disappearing people and other unexplainable occurrences lead Mio to recall an old folktale referring to entities called "Shadows," which may not be entirely fantasy. Supposedly, an encounter with one's Shadow foretells the person's impending demise.

Facing the dark side of Hitogashima Island, Shinpei stands against his grim fate to fulfill Ushio's final will—to protect Mio.

Alright, I want to start off this review by saying that I started this show because it was being touted as "the dark horse" of the season. I will also say that the very first episode has what it takes to grab your attention. The problems, however, start quite literally after that point. Our Main Protagonist is an idiot. Idiot, might actually be an understatement here. To explain I do have to add spoilers and there's no way I can avoid it. I can try to be a bit vague here and there but, generally speaking, it's still spoilers. That out of the way, you have been warned.

Spoilers START (between episodes 2-5)

- The main character realizes that his enemy can take the appearance, voice and mannerisms of people. Our Main character chooses to go off talking to others about "other people that look like you" to other people, without knowing if they are people or the copies. Strike 1.

- The main character REPEATEDLY chooses to "split-up" even while knowing what his enemy is capable of and that they are looking to strike without attracting too much attention. He has, in just 3 episodes done this four times. Once to his family member, once to his buddy, once to the girl he likes and once to himself for being a moron. Strike 2

- In the fourth episode his secret is found out by the enemy and he knows they know. What does he do you may ask? Does he pull a Subaru and bite his tongue? Haha, no. He chooses let things continually get worse and they do. Episode 5 is entirely that. Strike 3

- In the latest episode I witnessed what had to be the worst writing I have possibly ever seen. The bad guys know of his abilities. The bad guys know there's a person on his side that has the means to kill him. They have literally every possible advantage. They have already won and everything. As fate would have it the shadow that has consumed 70% of the island already chose not to take his ally who was 5 feet from the source but instead go around her. Ok. When he tells her to kill him she slowly and reluctantly agreed RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE BAD GUYS WHO KNOW HIS ABILITY! What do they do? They very, very slowly approach his ally while she prepares herself even though earlier in the episode we saw that they can flash step through shadows aaaaand obviously she succeeded because there's another 20 episodes of this garbage.

To be clear, I don't inherently hate dumb main characters or dumb baddies. What I hate is inconsistent writing. In one moment the main character or the enemies are super intelligent but in the next they make the most blatantly stupid decisions.

I get why that last episode went like it did. They really, really wanted to push the drama but it came at the expense of the writing. So much so that it has honestly ruined this show in my eyes. I like the art. I like the music. The writing, unfortunately, is just too bad for me to confidently say I'll be able to finish this series. The main character is made out to be intelligent on multiple occasions but has repeatedly shown he's about as smart as the average 90's horror movie extra and the same goes for the baddies. Whether they are intelligent or not is dependent on what the plot needs. If the plot needs the baddies to suddenly forget they are super strong then they will. If the plot needs the main character to make dumb decisions to build tension or drama then he will. This is going to be one of those shows that, like the original SAO, garners a lot of hype from people who don't pay attention only for critics who actually do pay attention to come out and show the glaring issues and the score will suddenly drop.

this is how mystery anime should be done.

spoiler-free.

story:
i really like how it gives you enough clues to keep pace with the developments in the plot, but not enough to make it predictable. tension is skillfully maintained. the show-don't-tell aspect is subtle and well done.
art:
pleasant to look at, and character designs are quite unique. animation is really smooth. TINY SPOILER: i also like how the shadows have red on their bodies so viewers can differentiate between the real people and shadows, i know it has been done before, but the red makes it extra creepy.

The straight-up "here's your foreshadowing" on a mystery show of the season.

I'm not criticizing the cliches, but it is a friendly set-up for anyone who likes mystery. There's a certain charm to each mystery author's writing style, and I couldn't oppose the one used in this show either. How the show so far is neatly executed is what I personally prefer. There are no excessive "innovative" twists, no lore dumping right on the get-go, and no overblown fanservice. To be fair, the last part might be subjective or poorly aged later on.

The spring 2022 anime season is packed with sequels like the third season of Kaguya-sama and the highly anticipated adaptation of Spy x Family, but one upcoming series that has slipped under the radar is Summer Time Rendering.

***THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS***

After two years, Shinpei returns to his hometown on the Hitoga island to attend Ushio's funeral. He, Ushio, and her sister, Mio, have lived together for years up until his parents died. But coming to his hometown was a bit of a challenge. On the ship, Shinpei gets slapped after falling face-first into a woman's bosom. He watched Mio dive straight into the ocean after losing control of her bicycle. Not to mention the strange dream he had right before he arrived of Ushio warning him to protect Mio.

Shinpei learns that Ushio didn't drown like everyone believed: There's a mark on her neck that suggests foul play. There are rumors about mysterious beings that appear as doppelgängers, known as Shadows. Seeing a Shadow is akin to seeing death itself because it means the Shadow will hunt you down and kill you. While searching for a way to save Mio, Ushio is captured and killed by her Shadow, in front of Shinpei's eyes. Without blinking an eye, the Shadow shoots Shinpei as well.

Summer Time Rendering could have easily ended there. Shinpei got shot, but instead of dying, he survives and is sent back in time. Each time Shinpei dies, he is sent back in a loop, like Groundhog Day, except every time he comes back, it isn't at the same moment as before. In fact, he loses time. Shinpei, with help from Mio, has to figure out how to save her and the other people on the island, and how to defeat the Shadows before it's too late. However, it proves to be near impossible, with the Shadows repeatedly overpowering, except for the one time loop that brings an unexpected character back from the dead: Ushio.

The woman whom Shinpei met on the ship also came to the island with her own mission: Fourteen years earlier, her twin brother, Ryuunosuke, was killed by the Shadows, and now Hizuru Minamikata is back again to discover how the Shadows can be vanquished, once and for all.

Time-traveling anime is a tried-and-true story, but the way Summer Time Rendering unspools makes it all the more enticing. Every time Shinpei goes back in time, the sense of urgency increases, despite how he repeatedly returns to a moment when it feels like an ordinary summer's day. There's an interesting dichotomy in how peaceful the island looks when there is so much darkness lurking beneath. It has everything horror fans would want, and everything fans of mystery love. Because the Shadows are exact duplicates of those they copy, can Shinpei and his allies even trust each other?

The manga is an exciting page-turner. Shinpei retains all of his memories when he travels through time, and he starts piecing together the clues to create a strategy to change the outcome. Despite being a time-travel story, Summer Time Rendering never feels repetitive. Shinpei soon realizes there is a limit to the time loop, further adding tension to the story. This is rare because the plot device always seems like a power that makes the user invincible (until they get killed), but that gets twisted in Summer Time Rendering because it's Shinpei's death that triggers the loop.

The cast of characters is also distinctive, and although romance is hinted at the beginning between Mio and Shinpei, as well as between Ushio and Shinpei, the romantic elements don't take center stage. It seems like Shinpei will never be able to escape this seemingly endless loop of a nightmare, but every time he travels through time, he gets closer to saving his friends.
