Synopsis

It has been a century since "true magic"—initially thought to be merely folklore and legend—had become commonplace technology worldwide. First National Magic University Affiliated High School (First High), one of the nine magic academies in Japan, admits two skilled siblings—Miyuki and Tatsuya Shiba—into the academy. First High splits its students into two groups, Course 1 and Course 2, based on entrance exam scores. This causes an apparent disdain for the Course 2 students, as they are labeled "Weeds" by Course 1 students, who alternatively call themselves "Blooms."

Tatsuya is admitted to Course 2, while his sister Miyuki joins Course 1 as an honor student. Miyuki wishes to show First High that, despite her brother being labeled as inept, he is among the best magicians in the whole world.

Mahouka Koukou no Yuutousei retells the story of Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei from the point of view of Miyuki and the other female characters.

In short, if you like "Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei / The Irregular at Magic High School" you will like this as well. It is pretty much required to first watch that, the main show, before starting this. This is more backstory and details regarding that main story, mostly from Miyuki's perspective.

The story starts at the same point as the main show, joining the magic school, and goes all the way through the competition between schools. It jumps around a lot though. This is why watching the main show first is pretty much mandatory.

I wish this site would bring back the reviewers rating number. Very unsatisfactory to read 'mixed feelings.'

If you never saw the original, then this show is okay. HOWEVER, having seen it and liked it a lot, this show is a bit of a flop. It endorses so many annoying aspects. Making characters have become gay, extreme focus on sibling love (until otherwise known, read as incest, or maybe they're not blood related?), and a focus on what used to be side characters are now the focus while the lead characters are trivialized. This show had so much potential. If Irregular was about his brother Honor could've been about Miyuki. Instead all we get is a generic slice of life with some throw-ins from the main series.

I know they could've done something better here, that short flashback on episode 13? Those would've been nice. Explain the secrecy their past, what they've been through. This could've been a perfect setup for another season. Seeing their past through Miyuki's eyes, things she went through during the series. I mean in Irregular we had everything going on in-between his school life and his covert operations, surely Miyuki did more than just ...
