Seijo no Maryoku wa Bannou desu

Since ancient times, the citizens of Slantania have lived within a shroud of miasma, a force that brings forth monsters creating havoc around the world. When the kingdom's Order of Knights becomes incapable of containing the monsters, the Grand Magus summons a holy maiden—the legendary "Saint"—to obliterate the horrid creatures and restore peace.

One evening, as Sei Takanashi returns home from a long day at work, a magical force pulls her into a foreign world. Upon her arrival to the kingdom of Slantania, she overhears that the Grand Magus inadvertently summoned two Saints—Sei and a brown-haired girl. Needing only one holy maiden, the prince declares the other girl as the Saint, leaving Sei to her own devices.

Sei sets her sight on the Medicinal Flora Research Institute, an establishment known for its studies regarding herbs and potions. While indulging in her latest passion, Sei has a fateful encounter with the commander of the Third Order of Knights. But little does she know, her aptitude as a Saint will continue to exert its influence over her new life.

And another Isekai! But, lo and behold, this time it was very good, and even, surprise, original because here we have an anime that combines Isekai and Josei-type romance.

In summary: In the fantastic world of this Isekai, the regions are semi-wild and humans live in cities that are constantly under pressure from monsters and an evil mist from the outside. Occasionally, a saint appears, who has the power to repel monsters and mist and bring many other blessings.

Unfortunately, it's been a long time since a saint has appeared, and the country is in difficulty and decides to resort to a ritual to summon one. It's ... our heroine, a young Japanese woman, who gets chosen along with another Japanese girl she doesn't know. Since the prince of the country expects only one saint, he chooses the young girl, and our heroine finds herself relegated to the status of a prestigious guest, but not too much, and ends up delving into herbology and potion-making.

Of course, the situation will evolve, but I don't want to spoil, so I won't say more.

The big strength of the anime is to set up a romance that will be the heart of the story. Unlike some Josei, the anime avoids the pitfall of the stagnant reverse harem, and here it's really focused on a single, very sweet romance. Another strength of the anime is that our heroine is of a certain age and is not a middle or high school student. And that's already quite rare in normal times, but in an Isekai/Romance, it's a bonus.

And well, it was cute, the heroine is adorable, and everything is very well put together. It's not perfect-perfect either: it could have been longer, had a better soundtrack, been a bit more original in the universe, which is just another medieval fantasy world without much character. But it's already very good as it is. I recommend it. Oh, and even though I would be happy to have a Season 2, Season 1 is self-sufficient and doesn't end with unanswered questions or any cliffhanger. So you can go ahead and watch it with your eyes closed.

For me, it's a solid 9/10.

Mixed Feelings

The Saint's Magic Power is Omnipotent is a female power fantasy romance that has nice production values, but does very little with them. Taking as few risks as possible.


Animation / Art / General Visuals - 7/10

There's a notable lack of action scenes which seems to have given more space for higher base art and animations, which are quite nice across the board, though not overly noteworthy.

The story is exactly what you'd expect from a power fantasy isekai that's made for women.

Our protagonist is a young woman working in an office. One day she gets teleported to a fantasy land as a saint that's supposed to help the kingdom fend off monsters.

That in itself is a pretty standard isekai formula. But unlike those focused for a male audience, in this story there are no women crowding the hero, but instead countless men crowding the heroine. In fact, I dare say they go way more overboard with it than in male fantasies. There's an insane lack of other women. Every single notable character is a pretty man. There are no women except servants, and a "rival" basically. Even the heroine in the story is taken aback by how there's a pretty guy around every corner, all vying for her attention. Guess the notion of having girl friends is overrated in female power fantasies.

The story itself goes nowhere. Our heroine is basically spending all day every day just slowly improving her special powers under the tutelage of an army of hot dudes. She has almost no ambitions or desires of any kind herself, just wanting to be a nice girl that helps others here and there, and that's about it.

The story really feels like a missed opportunity because the foundations are solid, but nothing really happens except endless slice of life and very non-consequential political and nobility intrigue.


Characters - 5/10

Our protagonist is a nice enough, competent woman, but her personality is all but non-existent. She has no real hobbies or interests, no real aspirations, deciding to latch onto the first pretty man that offers her a place in the new world and just rolls with it.

Similarly, the first hot dude to actually pursue her romantically is the one she automatically responds do, but in a very awkward manner as if she has never been in a relationship before. For a character that's supposed to be an adult, this is a tad weird. Why even make her to be an adult when she acts like a highschooler?

Secondary characters feature a whole army of pretty guys, all in their early 20's but already masters in their respective fields. Apparently everyone is a genius. All so that our heroine would be stuck in a perpetual state of mild confusion, surrounded by too many pretty faces, all of whom can be potential love interests.

There are no real villains or even proper antagonists of any kind. Nobody gets in our heroine's way, making it feel like nothing she does or does not do has any meaning.

The Saint's Magic Power is Omnipotent is a solid looking female power fantasy story, but does precious little with itself. The heroine isn't particularly interested in chasing power, the romance feels lackluster, there are no villains to fight against, and nothing really at stake.

But if you enjoy fantasy slice of life and want to watch a girl be granted immense power and be fawned over by a bunch of pretty guys, this will be the show for you.

More like The Saint's Endless Glazing is Infinite. Mary Sue the anime, if you will.

This is somewhat like many modern isekai which just use a fantasy world as a stage for power-fantasy purposes, except this does very little to barely even hide it. Learning about the world (and just about everything else) is secondary to hyping up Sei, the protagonist. From start to finish she is constantly glazed for her OP Übermensch powers that nobody else could hope to compare to, and she is quite literally beyond perfect in virtually everything she does. Unfortunately, all of those unrivaled, effortless superpowers and talents don't do much ... to cover up her worse-than-cardboard personality. In textbook Mary Sue fashion, she occasionally whines about her god-like magic as a "curse" (despite no drawback), or in the rare instance where there is a brief impediment to her goals and everything is not immediately solved by her OP powers that very second, she'll whine in her thoughts with complaints like "ugh, just kill me".

This isn't to say that the anime is devoid of good characters, in fact there are a few far more well-written, interesting characters that briefly get the spotlight, which makes me question why an otherwise seemingly capable writer would make the protagonist someone like Sei. Unfortunately, a lot of these more appealing side characters get critically dulled by Sei in a kind of "reverse foil character" way, and the vast majority of the show spends its time gassing up Sei, so the side characters don't have a lot of time to shine or progress on their own before being dulled down by her presence.

Be forewarned (because it had me fooled for the first several episodes) that while this may seem like it has more potential than what I've described and that it's just waiting to take the story into a more interesting direction once the plot really kicks off, in reality, it doesn't really change much. Instead of a real plot, most episodes are spent powering up and praising Sei in an almost slice-of-life-like fashion. The story and world narratively exist to glaze her. This is a Mary-Sue-glazing power-fantasy anime first and foremost and it remains as such, in fact it probably gets even worse in that regard as it goes on. It isn't an exaggeration to say that the show spends over 90% of its time metaphorically spreading its cheeks for how amazing Sei is while making barely any progress to the overall story itself.

The art is nice, though the greatest art in the world couldn't compensate for the rest of the issues this has.

If you're looking for good "isekais", and especially ones featuring female protagonists, try Fushigi Yuugi or Escaflowne. Absolutely only watch this if you love Mary Sues and/or are desperate for power fantasies. You may think I say this entirely ironically, but it seems like there are a lot of people who love vapid Mary-Sue-esque characters (both male and female) or a lot of these kinds of anime probably wouldn't exist, though this does rather take it to the extreme. Who needs compelling characters when you can just cover it up with an endless stream of glaze?
