Thought experiment: Swap yuri and jude with actual female characters. It's not really hard to do, since both have girly names and both speak in the tone of and emote and have facial features like women, to the point that many times it felt like the original characters were women and kobayashi and yashiro imitated said characters, like in a body swap episode of kokoro connect (1). I bet the header for the script had above both of those characters' names "as effeminate as possible".

The question is: Who else thinks that the purpose of those two characters to be the like the MC's gay friends and not interfere with the main route of hawke? (Which doesn't really make sense because there's the older hawke and johan) Why didn't they just make them girls to begin with? To the people who this appeals to, mind explaining why?

1- edit for specificity.

Firstly, just because they don't want to fk everyone, thy don't become gays.
Secondly, it is a medieval setting where girls are not allowed to work. This is an important topic in the show and they talked about it a lot, because of the blonde noble girl who is forced to marry someone.

The second point I get. The first one is you completely misrepresenting my own point. What makes them gay is not the fact that they show no romantic interest in sei, but simply their clearly effeminate persona, the fact that if you simply changed the VA and said they were women, everyone would believe it.

I'd like you to reference at least the episode in which they say that women aren't allowed to work. Hard to believe since I've been watching this last week and sei was allowed to work at the institute no questions asked.

Maybe in the novel it is said but so far in the anime I haven't heard any of it.

Because your point doesn't make sense at all. Yuri is actively trying to get Sei. I wouldn't call it gay behaviour.

About the woman working part, the whole plotline with the blonde noble girl is about how men decide the women's fate in that world.

Again, I don't know where you're getting that. What about Corinna and Zara? I'm pretty sure I've seen nameless background female characters working at the hospital, and one female knight at the expedition.

Also, saying that they're the stereotypical gay friends is a way of pointing out their feminine mannerisms and tone, and yes, complete lack of romantic interest in Sei. I also don't get where you got that Yuri is into her. The only thing he's after is studying her magical powers. If I'm wrong please reference an actual scene or ln chapter that disproves it.

Nothing you've said addresses the fact that they both could just be said to be women and nobody would have a problem with that apart from their voice.

Why shouldn't those two be guys? As you say, it makes almost no difference whether they're guys or girls. Unless you're saying it would be better if they're girls?

As for what's better about making them guys, we can have the female protagonist surrounded by good-looking guys at all times. I don't think it's that deep. Don't a lot of male-protagonist fantasy/power fantasy shows have all-female entourages?

So, if they're gonna be guys, why make them feminine to a fault? That's what I'm trying to understand here.

I think there's a misunderstanding. Note how there's nothing that I've said suggesting that it's wrong or bad to have those 2 characters as they are. It's just that it seems like they could easily have been made to be women or not feminine, and I'm trying to find out if that choice was made to appeal to girls and why.

Having 2 more girls amongst an already large number of guys doesn't seem too unreasonable, it would be in line with their relationships as they are already and would lend itself to more relating as 2 girl alchemists and 2 girl magicians. Unless people find the gay friend stereotype more interesting and entertaining.

Nothing wrong with that though, no need to get offended.

Oh I'm not offended. Sorry if I came on too strong (maybe it was the italics?).

I think the reason they're "effeminate" is for "variety," really. If every one of the male-cast was "traditionally" manly and causing immediate romantic tension, it would get pretty tiring and boring. Not to mention that would make the main love interest not stand out as much.

It's fun to have a harmless little brother type of guy that a girl can banter with and order around. Also a vaguely-threatening maverick type of guy who toys with the girl a little bit. And the viewers can stare at their handsome faces all the while.

The trope of good-looking, androgynous men (bishounen) is very common in anime/manga that is targeted towards women. I don't know the full history of it, but they're attractive and it's a nice bonus to have them in the show. Definitely not all bishounen are gay, but it might be related.

Jude looking the way he does definitely improved the anime for me.
If he was a girl he would no longer be an attractive guy. If he was some muscular, bulky guy he probably wouldn't be as approachable. He never really striked me as gay in particular, they're simply collegues and have no reason to flirt with each other. Although maybe the "MC's gay friends" explaination isn't that far off.
