Kimi to Boku no Saigo no Senjou, Aruiwa Sekai ga Hajimaru Seisen

A force known as Astral power permeates throughout the world, wielded by astral mages. Fearing its destructive power, the "Empire" persecutes those who show their abilities. The tormented mages then founded the Nebulis Sovereignty to flee from their oppressors. Since then, the two nations have been in bitter conflict, the war still going strong for more than a century.

After committing the great crime of freeing an imprisoned witch, the talented knight Iska is sentenced to prison. A year later, the Empire leadership suddenly decides to set him free, with the condition that he hunts down a fearsome mage known as the "Ice Calamity Witch." Hoping to end the war, Iska agrees. Coincidentally, the Ice Calamity Witch herself, Aliceliese "Alice" Lou Nebulis XI, also wishes for peace and is willing to do everything she can to bring down the Empire.

As Iska and Alice both yearn for a crusade that will turn the world into one without struggle, woe, or pain, the strings of fate tie them ever closer together, creating a bond that goes beyond something fabricated by mere coincidence.

Our Last Cruzade or a Rise of the New world is a light novel written by Kei Sazane and Illustrated by Ao Nekonabe, the series gained a manga adaptation, and later an anime of 24 episodes divided into 2 seasons made by the Silver Link studio. (Fate/Kaleid Liner Prisma Illya, Strike The Blood, Shijou Saikou no Daimaou, Sekai Saikou No Ansatsusha Isekai Kizoku ni Tensei Suru, Death March.) In the anime's story, Iska is a holy disciple who ends up saving a witch who was a prisoner. He is then relieved of his position as a holy disciple, but to regain his respected status, he ... must assemble a team and defeat the Witch of the Frozen Calamity, Aliceliese Lou Nebulis IX, So, in his battle with Aliceliese, he discovers that she wants to end the war between the imperial soldiers and the Nebulis sovereignty, and so they have to pretend they are fighting each other, because Alice has romantic feelings for Iska.

Let's analyze the main points of the anime, which are: the story, the characters, the soundtrack, the animation, the development, and my level of enjoyment of this anime.

STORY (9\10)

The anime's story is very good, really good. The way the author develops the anime's world, the concepts of the witches, as well as the power system, I thought was very good. He manages to have excellent comedic timing. Besides that, I thought his writing was very good indeed, Furthermore, I thought the anime's fights were very fluid and well-choreographed, and the original voice acting was really good.

Character development and romance development (7/10)


I didn't find the character development either bad or good; it was mediocre to me. The story doesn't give any indication of the couple having a more intimate relationship, like sex or a French kiss followed by intense sex, like chapter 16.5 of Sword Art Online or episode 44 or 45 of Tokyo Ghoul, I don't know, but this anime had a slower romance, In terms of character development, only Sisbell, Alice, Elletear, and Mismis were reasonably well-written. Iska's charisma is like a doorknob, Jhin is nowhere to be found, and the red-haired girl is so irrelevant I don't even remember her name. The villains in this anime are actually pretty cool, but I think trying to establish some kind of romantic relationship between Iska and Alice was a waste of time, They had things to explain, but they focused on a romance that doesn't even have a kiss or anything like that.

Art (8/10)

The art and animation in this anime are mostly very well done; the characters aren't deformed like in, for example, Dragon Ball Super, which has more distortion than fluidity, haha. The fights in Kimisen are very well choreographed, and the animation direction itself is something I really like, because the studio has above-average works like Fate/Kaleid Liner Prisma Illya and below-average works like Shijou Saikou no Daimaou, I really liked very much the animation.


Soundtrack (9/10)

The soundtrack for this anime is really good, but I especially like the openings and endings, like the first opening, "Against," by Kaori Ishihara. It's a song that perfectly matches the anime's atmosphere, and I was very surprised by how the director used the soundtrack during the fights.

Overall (9/10)

Our Last Crusade or the Rise of a New World is an anime that really surprised me while watching. Even though some characters are a bit annoying, like the protagonist, I actually like that because at least it doesn't get repetitive. The animation is excellent for a studio that delivers both above-average and below-average work. Our Last Crusade or the Rise of a New World surprised me a lot. The soundtrack and the openings/endings are also good, and honestly, I think it deserves a third season, but it's very unlikely. But let's see if some miracle happens, maybe this anime will get a new season.

I really hope you enjoyed this analysis, even if it was confusing in some parts. I hope you understood what I wanted to say about it.

Mixed Feelings

Kimi to Boku no Saigo no Senjou, Aruiwa Sekai ga Hajimaru Seisen or Our Last Crusade or the Rise of a New World, it's an anime that sets it's sights high, very high even, but it's execution to reach those heights struggles to do so. My short recommendation is that this is an overall decent show with very entertaining fight scenes, and great ideas for it's story, but it's story has execution that is rather messy and mixed. Fans of anime like Naruto, Jujutsu Kaisen, Demon Slayer, and Moonlit Fantasy are the most likely to enjoy this.

Let's start things off with the plot and story as this is definitely the most notable aspect of this show, for better or for worse. This show has it's own unique world that has 2 countries as the main focus for it's story, The Empire and The Nebulis Sovereignty. if you've already read the synopsis before reading this review you'll know that the Sovereignty was founded due to the Empire persecuting the Astral Mages. The Astral power these mages can wield is seemingly a genetic thing, as in those who don't have it can't use it, and those who do can. The plot focuses around the conflict between the Empire and the Nebulis Sovereignty, in a very military like way too. It's not a bad idea or plot all things considered, not the most unique thing but overall a good idea for making a good story with. However the other part of the plot involves the main characters and it's not quite as interesting, most would describe it as a "Romeo and Juliet" style situation, but I'd argue that it's not as good at that sounds. The show tries to pair Iska and Alice together, but does it in a poor way that it ends up simply detracting from the larger war and conflict part of the plot. How does this happen you might wonder? Aren't they on opposite sides of the war? Yes, it seems there's multiple "neutral cities" which seem to simply be "city countries" or something that haven't sided with either the Empire or the Sovereignty and that's how they end up seeing each other. This review wont get into the part of how "realistic" that is, because the show itself doesn't really explain how they're neutral anyways other than the countries haven't sided with either side. The main issue with the "Romeo and Juliet" like part is that these 2 main characters started out as enemies on the battlefield, and the "transition" it tries to have between enemies on a battlefield to a "Romeo and Juliet" love has them coincidentally keep running into each other after they first meet in a fight against each other on the battlefield. Each time they do the show is supposedly trying to shift them to end up feeling less like enemies who are against each other and actually start to "like" each other to some degree. It tries to be rather comedic most of the time about them constantly running into each other, but most of their interactions end up feeling too forced and somewhat kills the "Romeo and Juliet" aspect a bit because in their interactions they never really act like enemies who fought and tried to kill each other in the first place. The other parts and aspects of the plot fairs a little bit better but not by much as it has many of it's own execution issues. An example is our MC Iska, who at the beginning of the first episode frees a young maybe 13 or something year old girl with Astral abilities from the Empire prison. By doing so he gets sent to prison himself for it (no duh), and after a year they release him to fight for the empire again. Now why the heck did he do that? I couldn't tell you that, and apparently this show can't either because he did it despite later throughout the show stating very clearly multiple times that he does not wish to side against/betray his country. Like, I'm sorry what the heck? All he did was stupidly jail himself, like if he wanted to help end the war, or even just help that girl without betraying his country there's obviously better ways to do it. Not to mention he's a powerful and skilled solider in the military at the age of 15-16 and his backstory for how he became such was basically just a simple "This an that happened" statement from his childhood friend. Poor writing and plot issues like this seem pretty common throughout the show, as it goes on the show still has things happening that don't get properly fleshed out or explained enough leaving the viewer seeing a character make a decision that just seemed flat out stupid. Overall the messy execution resulting in mostly a lack of detail and explanation for some parts of the plot and story leave it having high potential and a lot of strong points but largely failing to actually use them to the fullest.


Now to briefly go over the characters as there's not too much to go over here. For the most part the characters are very entertaining and are very likable. The problem is the same as our MC which is that pretty much every character feels like a plot device and they themselves are incredibly shallow with little to no depth. There is some attempts to add depth to characters throughout the show but pretty much every time it doesn't go nearly far enough to actually do the job. On the whole they're pretty enjoyable characters but absolutely needed to be fleshed out much more and aren't anything to write home about. I do however want to pick a (example) to talk about although much of these problems go for many characters in the show. Iska's captain Mismis, I'm not even sure what the show wants her to be and to be fair I don't even know if the show itself knows either, she's supposedly the captain of the squad despite being clearly outmatched by her squad in combat skill, tactics, intelligence, and well pretty much everything. Yep even height because this show makes her the 25 year old who looks like she's 13. Not only that but half the time she ACTS 13 too, now she DOES have some importance to the plot, but it really just made her feel even more like a plot device who's only other purpose is to be there for fan service. Oh right did I mention fan service? Because this show falls prey to it also, now let me be real here, this show is rather tame when it comes to fan service (for the most part that is) but it's pretty clear which characters were designed to be "fan service focused", Alice for example always seems to wear clothing that helps emphasize her "chest size", and it's obvious why, she's fan service. Now I don't have a problem with shows doing fan service personally so long as it either 1, fits well with the show, such as a comedy like Konosuba, or 2, doesn't detract from or impact the show at all, which includes not taking the fan service too far in both frequency and "depth" if you get that meaning. The fan service in this show I feel just distracts from the plot and story much of the time, now this is a bit more of a subjective part of the show as viewers (potentially you) may really enjoy fan service, and that's fine, but having the serious plot and story that this show tries to have while also making a big push for fan service all throughout it doesn't help the already problematic plot.


Lastly lets briefly talk about the production by Silver Link, overall it's very good, fight scenes are smooth and very well animated. The art style is good and nice to look at and it's well drawn too. The music isn't anything amazing but it's good and gets the job done well, the voice acting is the same, it's pretty good and gets the job done well but isn't gonna amaze you or anything. On the whole it's very well done production wise, it's not top tier or anything, but the animation is very good and will easily make the watching experience better and more entertaining given the amount of fight scenes in the show.


Overall it's a decently entertaining show but it's plot, story, and characters lack a lot of depth and detail while also having some other small issues. However despite everything it still manages to succeed in the most important area, and that is being entertaining. If the lack of detail and depth in it's story, characters, and plot are things that won't ruin the show for you then this will be a good watch, otherwise skip this look for something else. I will lastly note that this show sets itself up for a second season, and that many of these issues can potentially be improved upon and make for a better second season. This first season of this show managed to be decently entertaining despite it's problems and I personally enjoyed it enough to want to keep watching (especially for IMO the best character Lord Mask) but as a reviewer who tries to take an objective stance this shows execution problems and faults have it end at a 6/10.

This show is pretty basic, it isn't that unenjoyable but it is very very incomplete. It's supposed to be a Romeo and Juliet like romance story, but the romance doesn't even develop in the entire show. Basically, the show fails at its main point, which is why I can't rate it higher than a four. The ending is not built-up to, and it feels like the show should've ended either later in the story or in the end of the second last arc that was covered. You can look at what my average rating is, and it is a 8.14 at the moment of writing ... this. In other words, this is the second lowest score I ever remember giving in over a 100 shows. If I were you, I would tell you to pass on this show. The military parts aren't that bad though, some of the politics seem average-written. Some of the characters are pretty forgettable as well (won't say who because spoilers) and by the end of the season it doesn't really feel like there was much progress. The show just didn't really go anywhere overall, and the characters don't seem to develop at all. I would ask you to not watch this show as it's probably not worth your time.
