Pastel Memories

The story takes place in the future, the city of Akihabara. It was once called a "Holy land of otaku" but now has become an office town. Otaku culture has declined, people are losing memories of anime and manga, and only a few specialty shops remain open.

What supports the world of creative works are "memories" of manga and anime in people's minds, but when the world of the creative work is destroyed by a virus, it disappears from everyone's memory and is erased from the material world.

12 girls working in a small shop in a corner of Akihabara are fighting the virus to protect everyone's important memories about their favorite manga and anime, and return Akihabara to the way it was before!

Mixed Feelings

Pastel Memories is one hell of a cheese ride. It caught my attention when I got a used issue of Megumi magazine (only because it had a BanDori insert, but I gave that to my friend), I found Pastel Memories being promo'd as both a mobile game and a anime-spin off. Its art for that game is much nicer in a sense, but the premise is ratter "standard". At least the colors stand out and probaly live up to its "pastel" from the title name.

STORY - Not the grandest. If anything it borrowed the "world/monster of the week" formula from typical child-friendly anime like ... Precure or Pokemon. It is interesting to see the girls interact with worlds inspired by other beloved anime/manga/light novel/games, without having the IP to being shoved in... Due to possible copyright I guess. From 1 to 12, it is honestly underwhelming. But, I won't diss to much because this anime serves as cheese fuel to be enjoyed without over-thinking to much.

CHARACTER - Each girl is a archetype (dere switch, quiet loli, gun hobbyist(?), etc. etc.) that has been done in many of the "moe blob fuel" anime I have seen so far. There are some girls that I do honestly like and would be happy to scout them (or their costumes) if I do ever play the game. The only girls that I somehow like/relate are Machiya (damn cat puns and that cat-like personality...) and Komachi (future avatar girl? Maybe?). The costume designs to me are probably the strong point of Pastel Memories. I am a sucker for the mahou-shoujo steampunk aesthetic and I think that's their initial selling point.

ANIMATION - Its not bad, nor good. And on the Chutaro episode, I feel like it intentionally went downgrade due to a lot of children's' anime had mixed quality (to a laughable level), so I guess that's a plus? I'm not to nit picky at that department, because I have seen worse on specific episodes of Precure that makes Pastel Memories look tolerable.

OST - Not as memorable? But I think I herd a few tints of a OST that do sound good and helps amcompanying the mood of the anime. I'm not a OST buff since I do have specific tastes, but once again: it gets the job done.

OP - I like the lineless animation, which I think its a nod to a specific movie director, but I can be wrong. Its not the most catchiest song to the point I would play on loop, but it had that right "pastel" feel to its name.

ED - DAT FANSERVICE. Okay the art for the girls' and their beach bods are a eye popper! The song feels like a typical beach moe song, and not one I would listen in repeat. But it did capture that said-beach look for the bikini girls, so I guess it got its job done. Otherwise: I am genre nit-picky and my own picks would probably ruin Pastel Memories before the virus affects them! xD

I don't know what other points I should mention, but if anyone wants to toss me questions or opinions, feel free too! Otherwise, I think its an okay anime with a easy story to follow if you have a tired day.

Would I recommended it? Yes and no? Yes if you like junk food anime, but "no" if you can't stand repetition of plot formula like the classic Pokemon or Precure episode. If you like to view for the memes (because I am sure there are some), then go for it! I do wish I can play the mobile game (in English) to judge and compare to the anime...

Mixed Feelings

Preliminary (11/12 eps)

While this anime really isn't the best, it is quite clear that it could be enjoyable for kids who don't want a deep or complicated storyline. It is enough to entertain a bored child but has almost nothing more to offer.

This anime has a large cast of characters; none of which have any personality whatsoever. There are too many characters with not enough time spent on each of them. I cannot recall any of the characters names and I will most likely forget about all of them once the spring season starts.

The animation isn't amazing either, it's satisfactory at best.

There seams to be a minimal ... amount of thought put into explaining the reason things are the way they are. There is a large amount of plot holes and things that seem to have no reason for being a part of the show.

The show had no conclusion and left me confused way too often.

This entire anime seems to be nothing more than a mess of plot holes, unexplained events, boring characters and a semi-decent outro.

Look, I wanted a cute anime girl series with a ridiculous premise. And I got it. But that's basically a summary of everything remotely good about this anime.


STORY: 4

Take one look at my profile and you'll know I love a good episodic, minion-of-the -day magical girl. But they have to have some motivation, some reason for existence, outside of just wanting to be evil. And this series delivers absolutely nothing of interest on that end.

I also love a good wacky premise, and while the idea of removing anything remotely Otaku related from the memories of people in various universes, the universes themselves do little to ... inspire interest, mostly being minor and silly variants of the original.


While the first three episodes may feel underwhelmingly odd, it soon becomes clear that this is just what it is, and always will be. It's predictable, cyclic, and quickly becomes a yawn fest.


ART : 2

Yeah, it's bad.

Firstly, there's a complete lack of understanding of anatomy, and ridiculous inconsistencies. Girls don't magically add or loose ten boob sizes depending on their clothes. They don't randomly change heights, either. Or face shapes. Or really anything.

Honestly, the art is so messy that even a toddler could choreograph the fight scenes. Which, again, are painfully inconsistent in every conceivable way. They're not even entertaining in their more absurd moments.

Some of their costume designs have the shadow of something that could have been cool, but frankly, all of it I've seen before, and better made. The steampunk magical girl outfits are so beyond cringe.



CHARACTER: 3

Did I mention the lack of bad-guy development? Well, the heroines are no better. If anything, they're worse, progressing and regressing their personality traits at random. I can't even complain that they're all Mary Sues, because frankly, I could barely tell who was supposed to act like who by the end. Sure, there was the gun-lover, the clumsy protagonist with pink hair, but that's about the sum of it in spite of a rather large cast.

There's a few hilarious side characters, though, and I do have to give some props to them for creating a cool teddy bear bunny mascot thing that actually isn't annoying for once.


SOUND: 5

Weirdly, they have a few banger tunes, some surprisingly decent one-liners, and a few rather appropriately unique sound effects. I can't hate on the Seiyuu girls either, as they're doing their utmost with some rather awful material. But once again, the inconsistencies are just something I can't overlook.


WHO DO I RECCOMEND IT TO?


Nobody. Literally nobody. This series is honestly not even worth the time it took to write this review, so I definitely wouldn't want anyone to have to sit through the whole thing as I did.
