Kill la Kill

After the murder of her father, Ryuuko Matoi has been wandering the land in search of his killer. Following her only lead—the missing half of his invention, the Scissor Blade—she arrives at the prestigious Honnouji Academy, a high school unlike any other. The academy is ruled by the imposing and cold-hearted student council president Satsuki Kiryuuin alongside her powerful underlings, the Elite Four. In the school's brutally competitive hierarchy, Satsuki bestows upon those at the top special clothes called "Goku Uniforms," which grant the wearer unique superhuman abilities.

Thoroughly beaten in a fight against one of the students in uniform, Ryuuko retreats to her razed home where she stumbles across Senketsu, a rare and sentient "Kamui," or God Clothes. After coming into contact with Ryuuko's blood, Senketsu awakens, latching onto her and providing her with immense power. Now, armed with Senketsu and the Scissor Blade, Ryuuko makes a stand against the Elite Four, hoping to reach Satsuki and uncover the culprit behind her father's murder once and for all.

Behind a hefty layer of weirdness, bizarreness, and whimsical nonsense, Kill la Kill is an anime that embraces many of the quirks and eccentricities of some of the great shows of the 90s, like Evangelion or Revolutionary Girl Utena, as well as their passion for deep life reflections in between snippets of world-threatening battles.

Five minutes into the show, I already knew I was in for a treat. The show makes it obvious from the get-go that it’s going to be unforgettably deep while not taking itself seriously at any point. Or rather, it is dead serious about emphasizing the beauty and importance of humanity’s endless ... rarities that are so often covered in social uniforms and norms.

The art style is just as over-the-top as needed for such an over-the-top story; everything is exaggerated, vibrant, and colorful, and most importantly, everything is drawn with such clear whimsy and joy that it’s just a pleasure to watch. It gives a marked old-school feeling, which I personally love, and portrays each and every character in the show with loads of personality and visual identity.

This vibrant defense of uniqueness is, to an extent, betrayed by the standard Shounen trope structure that it obediently follows and the somewhat chaotic pacing of its many arcs. The ending is filled with plot twists that sometimes feel forced into the plot for the sake of gags but don’t seem particularly natural (certain characters undergo several sudden changes of heart in what probably amounts to a few hours in real life). Additionally, some of the earlier episodes could have traded a few minor battles for characterization or further bonding between the main heroine and her best friend, but that's just my personal take.

Nonetheless, I thoroughly enjoyed Kill la Kill and will remember many of its scenes in the years to come. It is definitely a unique anime with a very powerful message that will leave no one indifferent.

Mixed Feelings

naked people who wear clothes

its a classic anime for people who have either been watching anime for a long time or for people who have just gotten into anime a year ago

the story isn't the greatest, but the art style, good sounds tracks, and humor definitely make up for it

each character had their own strengths and flaws but they were all great in their own way but mako is a 10/10 shes perfect.

you may or may not like it, because if you are on the younger side, this will definitely be a good watch for you, if ur an unc, you'll find it funny but ... probably wont say it was the greatest piece of fiction you've ever consumed.

What a waster, what a fucking waster ©
Idk how people find this anime entertaining. Does it comment on something like a good satire? Nope. Is it funny in dialogue or visual comedy like a good parody? Nope. Does the over-the-top action provide enough entertainment? Nah, it's repetitive. I don't want to call a stupid show stupid and write a whole essay ranting about it. Being a stupid, cheesy, wild-ride cringe show is fine. It can be delicious. But it's not a KLK case. It's just a boring waste.
Let me, a professional cringe enthusiast, tell you how to make a good cringe. It's simple - once ... you set a "trash bar," you can't lower it at any cost. Like in the Riki-Oh, where the level of insanity never drops. A grotesque gore killing evolves into an even more pathos-laden silly mass murder scene and action, the viewer never gets a chance to catch their breath. What about KLK? When a silly villain is beaten, all the tasty bits of young female flesh are shown and all the arguments are shouted, nothing happens. It just goes on and on in the same groove. Same jokes, same nudity, same action. And of course, the same expositional drama, as if anyone would care about a cheap clichéd revenge arc in the trash that was made for fun. So for me watching KLK was like chewing cheap gum - repetitive motion with the taste that wears off pretty fast.
