A line from Apocalypse Now sums up Barefoot Gen, in particular: "The horror, the horror..." Essentially the same film. Barefoot Gen has always, rather unfairly, existed in the shadow of Ghibli's own 'war through the eyes of innocent children' masterpiece. Both films are based on the true accounts of child survivors of the bombing of Japan during World War 2. And in both films children are suddenly thrust into the world of adults: having to find it within themselves to protect their loved ones as their world falls apart around them and chaos ensues. In Gen it's the lead's mother; in Fireflies it's the lead's  read more

Both movies depict how World War II and the bombing had effect of common Japanese citizens in a very realistic way. While Hadashi no Gen depicts the realism in a gruesome way in and shows all the physical horrors, Kono Sekai no Katasumi ni shows the side of the "regular" life of the survivors.

Same time during WWII in Japan and about how families were affected are very similar.

Both are about the Hiroshima bombing in 1945 and its tragic consequences. While Pika Don is short and informative on the actual act of the bombing, Barefoot Gen builds on the bombing and shows the aftermath with detail.

Comparing Glass no Usagi with both Hadashi no Gen movies - they both describe roughly the same period of Pacific War and a little part of its aftermath. Both deal with misfortunes of the family during military actions and are told from the point of view of the survivor whose autobiography they are based on. Both are antiwar and strongly advocate for peace.

- both deal with the aftermath of a destroyed city (Hadashi no Gen being caused from the 1945 bombing of Hiroshima, and Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 being caused by an earthquake). - both deal with the after effects of a tragedy as told from a child's perspective. - both have protagonists that deal with the concept of death on a massive scale. - both have major themes influenced around family and friendship, and the importance of it during tragic times.

Stories made by Nakazawa Keiji about the atomic bombings and their effect on people.

Movies from the early 80's that trade historical fidelity and basic logic for sheer uniqueness and memorability. Both include stylised depictions of nuclear disasters, unintentionally funny lines of dialogue and absurd character moments. Hadashi no Gen has some really hard-hitting emotional moments, while Shounen Kenya is just crazy 24/7 and utilizes many "avant-garde" animation techniques to complement that.

Both are 80´s historical anime about Hiroshima. Both portraits kids during the bombing in a realistical way. Both are anti-war and both were made by Madhouse.

- Both anime is adapting a huge tragedy from the World War II through the eyes of a civilian. - Both anime show the tragedy in it's pure form.

Both anime movies presents us the life after the Second World War, but there is a little time difference because in Gen the movie starts right after the atomic bombing while in Furusato Japan after 10 years of the end of WW2! Both movies are showing us how hard it was for the kid's in that period, the education first of all and then the rest, economy etc. So the movies include stealing, fighting etc. In both movies there is some sad moments for losing a friend/parent. The difference in the movies is that in Furusato Japan they also focusing on singing old Japanese folk songs for they  read more

This series is very similar to Barefoot Gen in that it shows the harsh realities of war through the eyes of a teenage boy struggling to survive. The only difference is Barefoot Gen is more historical and based on true events that happen during WWII. Where as "Now and then Here and "There" is fictional. How ever both share a common theme of the atrocities of war and how people are corrupted and end up killing each other.

Children coping with the ravages of war. Hadashi no Gen is decidedly more realistic but The Boy Who Saw the Wind isn't total fantasy in its depiction of events and emotions. Both are excellent.

Very straightforward recommendation. The history of the family in the light of devastating historical events based on the real story. I guess Hadashi no Gen was one of the inspirations for creating Giovanni no Shima.
