Two men have just arrived at a location known as Quindecim and are unable to remember how they got there. They are immediately greeted by a young woman who escorts them to a small bar, where a bartender awaits them. They are told that they will have to participate in a game, randomly chosen by roulette, and will be unable to leave until its completion; if they refuse, the consequences will be dire. In addition to the rules of the game, the two men are told to play as if their lives are at stake.

The game that has been chosen is billiards. But there's more to it than just pocketing pool balls, as the two are about to find out the outcome could mean life or death.

Death Billiards is one of the four anime works that each received 38 million yen (about US$480,000) from the "2012 Young Animator Training Project." Just like in 2010 and 2011, the animation labor group received 214.5 million yen (US$2.65 million) from the Japanese government's Agency for Cultural Affairs, and it distributed most of those funds to studios who train young animators on-the-job.

The film was later expanded into the 2015 TV anime Death Parade.

Death Billiards is a captivating and thought-provoking anime that takes viewers on a thrilling journey of life, death, and the complexities of human nature. Created by Yuzuru Tachikawa, this one-episode anime serves as a prequel to the popular series "Death Parade." With its masterful storytelling, intense psychological battles, and a unique twist, Death Billiards leaves a lasting impression on its audience.

Engaging Premise and Intense Atmosphere:
The premise of Death Billiards is as intriguing as it is mysterious. The story unfolds within a mysterious bar where two strangers find themselves engaged in a high-stakes billiards match. As the game progresses, the true nature of the match is ...

Mixed Feelings
Death Billiards is the short film that appeared 2 years before the actual series. It is basically only a single Episode. This one would perfectly fit as the 3th Episode.
However, it is also possible to look at it directly at the start, as it could already arouse enormous curiosity and acts as a good opening Episode.

There is nothing new to say about the story or events. It's just not another episode anymore.

In conclusion

You won't miss a thing if you don't look at it. However, it doesn't hurt to add it in the middle, as it simply adds another episode to the series.

This short movie was produced by some amateur trainees at Madhouse. And you can tell, because it wasn't very good.

The story was highly unrefined and boring. The short movie clearly strived to be a thriller and psychological drama. This inherently means the pacing was somewhat decent; there were a few new things to hold my interest for a few seconds.
However the climax was very disappointing. It was not even clear which scene was the climax because the pacing was so monotone and inorganic. It was like reading a list of events on an author's outline, rather than being engaged by the world or characters. So in ...
