I finished Honey and Clover a while ago, and have been meaning to reach out about it. I am not a big MAL user anymore, similar to you I suppose, I have been watching less anime lately and more movies and Western television. My boyfriend at college and I just watched Hibike! Euphonium though and I loved that. No idea how I did not watch it sooner, its a great Kyoani show and a good depiction of high schoolers. Definitely want to finish Doremi this summer and maybeeee Gintama (but who am I kidding hahaha). I totally get the feeling that something is missing from anime these days. I have had no drive to watch it on my own while at school. Glad Frieren is doing it for you though, definitely want to check that one out. There's a few new seasonals that look promising that I will push myself to watch, mostly sequels.
Honey and Clover is phenomenal. The final chapter made me cry, and hit me harder for a longer time than most manga do. Takemoto and Hanyuu's inability to reach out to each other and fully support one another, finalized by Hanyuu's gift, very powerful stuff. Love Takemoto's entire biking story too. Him returning home not for himself, but for Hanyuu is beautiful. There are so many characters that I projected onto real people I know in this one. Chika's characters are always so warm and charming. I would have given H&C an instant 9, but I was not a huge fan of the Shuji confession at all. I certainly had picked up on the vibes that he liked Hanyuu, but it still felt weird. I would have wanted her with Takemoto, but I like Takemoto's reasoning for needing to leave her. Then theres Morita, who like you said, has a cute and compatible relationship and would also be good for Hanyuu. Would have wanted that, Shuji felt weird, he is much more like a caretaker, and knowing hes attracted to Hanyuu made some earlier scenes that were not creepy more so in a weird way for me. Not that I dislike age gaps in media, but this one felt shoehorned in. Left a weird taste in my mouth, even with the beautiful ending otherwise. Love how none of the characters fully have it figured it, that tugged at my heartstrings. What do you think about Shuji?
Again, sorry for my slow response, your comments have been on my mind even if it has taken me a long time to actually respond. Maybe I will share my art one day, I will be a senior next year, so I will have a show in my school's gallery :) well, I will see you when I see you, hope you are enjoying the warming-up weather, even if it is cold and rainy where I am.
I had always heard that Zetsubou's ops predict the manga, which I think is so cool. Does that mean Kumeta gave some spoilers to the Shaft animators since the manga was not over yet? Thats so neat, and seems very in line with the playful nature of the manga. This is totally a manga I would return to in a few years, especially with the knowledge of the ending.
Your iceberg is amazing. You were right, I had seen it before finishing the manga, although much of it I did not understand at the time (still dont get every single thing in the lower portions). Do you have access to any of your notes/a database of some of your research on these theories? I would love to check that out, if you are willing to share, even if your notes are unorganized. Either way, great work, love the images you chose too.
Yes, I have really been liking Honey and Clover. Its really sweet, and has already done a good job at representing the roles of the friend group and their own hangups. As an art sudent myself, much of the comedy is great too. Its really making me want to read the manga for Sangatsu, since I love the anime, and you can totally see the influences of H+C on Chika's later work.
But yeah. Whew. Definitely the longest manga I’ve read yet but so worth it. Many of my fav moments and jokes were actually in the last few volumes. Fuuka also became a big fav, alongside Chiri of course. The twist was CRAZY. I knew there would be some level of unreliable narration going in but I was not anticipating something that wild. That being said, I would really love to see your big internet project now :-)
