Hiya!

Thank you for the Friend Request

It's a pleasure to meet you!

Going in blind is the best way to do it. If you end up liking Excel Saga, check out the OVA Nurse Witch Komugi-chan and Nerima Daikon Brothers afterwards since they're from the same director. The latter's one of the rare exceptions of an anime musical since it's a Blues Brothers parody. Also I hope you're practicing your pirating skills because unless you can get your hands on a used copy, that one'll never-ever-ever-ever-ever see the light of day again. Aniplex apparently was horrified by it because they clearly didn't know who Shinichi Watanabe is lol.

It was such a good show. Bro found the Nozomi DVD boxset (really nice print) and we watched it together, had a blast, laughed about as much as we did with Excel Saga (though I don't know which is funnier). Saw it dubbed because Crispin Freeman was the main lead, which it turns out was his first role and he was absolutely stellar. Cast in general was spot-on, can't recommend it enough. As for the OVA... your mileage may vary since it becomes more serious in tone. It's still good, just isn't the same.

First off, thanks for the add! Been a while since I can chat someone up on MAL, ahahah.
But that's.... really nice. Sincerely. I appreciate it when people can learn to accept God into their life without the perspective of fear. As in, growing up my parents focused crazy on punishment, hell and all that, got me real sore about religion as a kid; It really is so much sweeter when you can think of God for the more altruistic and paternal side!

On a completely different note: I've never seen Dark Side of Dimensions on anyone's favourites before!

I didn't pick up on it for years until I started wondering why it was certain anime make me drowsy and others don't. I think the first time I noticed this was with Dragon Ball (not necessarily Z), which I do enjoy, but holy cow why is a martial arts anime so slow? It really shouldn't be slow--but then again, kung fu movies are the same way... might be an Asian thing.

But then I kept noticing it with other Toei works. Slow or fast, there's really no real sweet spot. Closest might be Ojamajo Doremi and Kinnikuman, think also the original Tiger Mask--but then agian, I was watching the Italian dub. Something about dubs changes the pacing of a series, it's weird. And this is not just a Toei thing, other studios can also suffer from bad pacing or too fast pacing, however, pacing seems to be Toei's biggest flaw and thus an anime of theirs can be spotted a mile away on top of animation production. *shrugs*

Glad to know Discotek didn't leave people in the dark with the subbed version. I have my grievances with them, but when they do something good, they need to be praised for it. If only they could've kept Rightstuf from getting assimilated...

Also side mention, The Irresponsible Captain Tylor's episode 23 is one of, if not the greatest episode in all of anime. And there's a lot of great episodes out there.

Ah got'cha. Yeah, that's just how dubs were back in the day, and I think that was just Saban folks still carrying over to another dubbing studio just doing their thing. Now something like "I felt that!" in Japanese (I dunno how that one goes in Japanese) being turned into "That's a buncha punch!" in English would suggest they had to match the mouth flaps (if talking on-screen), though I wonder if that was the dubber making a reference. It kinda sounds like something I would've heard in an '80s/'90s cartoon, just couldn't tell you which one.

'Cause when was Bo-bobo dubbed again? 2005 I believe? I think this was among the last hurrah for gag dubs not 4KIDS of that caliber, but it being a widget series for kids meant they could get away with it with American viewers. Zatch Bell was apparently the same way from what I've gathered, I just still haven't sat down to watch it because I haven't decided if I want to go dub or sub.

Another reason I haven't checked out Bo-bobo in its original sub yet is due to Toei Animation themselves. They're a weird studio in that their pacing is either slow as molasses or speedy as crack, no in-between. And yet I've noticed that dubs have turned slow series into being speedy, which is honestly bizarre. Sailor Moon is a good example of this, I had a blast with the original '90s dub (it was on KissAnime at the time) but I had to fight to stay awake as soon as I hit Sailor Stars. This was the same with Crystal like oh my God. I can't imagine sitting through the newer Viz dub without struggling, so I haven't tried to. Now because Bo-bobo is a widget gag series and as far as I can tell the dub did not mess with the show's pacing by cutting out scenes or shortening them, I figure I won't have that issue, but I've been burned one too many times by Toei that I hesitate to. Also I'm not confident about my Japanese pop culture knowledge of the time that I know exists in the show, hopefully Discotek actually gave footnotes for them.

But that's just a me-thing. And it has been years since I last watched the show, so... *shrugs*
Lil-Bird Nov 8, 11:30 AM
Haha bless their hearts, they're trying with the special effects and gags, but our bodies just can't handle going all out lol. The costumes are absolutely fantastic, though, that's probably where all the budget tends to go to.

You sure there's no wordplay involved? The Japanese absolutely adore their wordplays, and I know Bo-bobo did that since a lot of that wordplay is extremely difficult if not outright impossible to translate into English, so the dub would just outright rewrite lines to match. If Discotek Media didn't showcase that well for the sub (Samurai Pizza Cats clearly was a higher priority for them years ago), that's on them. I'm assuming the original DVDs had to have done that since older releases tended to have that level of care put into them, just haven't been lucky to come across them at a reasonable price to check. My brothers still kick themselves for not being able to afford the volumes they came across at a thrift store.

Lol I enjoy these random comments about my older reviews. Didn't think someone would find that Bo-bobo review ever again since it's a "preliminary review" lol. Glad you like it.

I didn't know about a stage play. Not surprised it's still beloved over there to get one, I'm assuming it was original or adapted a later arc in the manga (which I still haven't read, actually have no idea if it's fully scanned now). And even then, I still haven't checked out the series in its original Japanese, probably never will despite having the Blu-Ray now.

This is silly but I like asking it.. why'd you pick the verse you did? Mean anything to you or just sounds cool? If you don't mind me askin of course ;-) I used to have a lot of Ezekiel on my page, hahah.
