Shueisha announced a third anime season of the Kingdom manga series on Friday, scheduled to premiere on the NHK-G channel in April 2020. The new anime season will adapt the Gasshougun-hen (Coalition Army Arc), which spans from the 25th to the 32nd volume. The announcement comes in approximately five and a half years since the last season ended in 2014.

The third season is being led by a new team of production staff under the supervision of Yasuhisa Hara, the original creator. Masakazu Morita, Jun Fukuyama, and Rie Kugimiya are reprising their character roles as Li Xin (Li Shin), Ying Zheng (Ei Sei), and He Liao Diao (Karyou Ten).

Synopsis
During the Warring States period in China, Li Xin and Piao are two brother-like youngsters who dream of becoming Great Generals, despite their low status as orphaned slaves. One day, they encounter a man of nobility, who gives Piao an opportunity to undertake an important duty within the state of Qin's royal palace. Parting ways, Xin and Piao promise each other to one day become the greatest generals in the world. However, after a fierce coup d'état occurs in the palace, Xin meets with a dying Piao, whose last words spur him into action and lead him to encounter the young and soon-to-be king of Qin, Ying Zheng.

Although initially on bad terms, Xin and Zheng become comrades and start on a path filled with trials and bloodshed. Zheng's objective is to bring all the warring states under Qin, and Xin seeks to climb to the very top of the army ranks. Against a backdrop of constant tactical battle between states and great political unrest, both outside and within the palace, the two endeavor towards their monumental ambitions that will change history forever. The historical military-themed series has been serialized in Weekly Young Jump since 2006. Shueisha published the 55th volume (pictured right) on August 19, with the 56th volume planned for November 19 release. Kingdom has a cumulative 45 million copies of its compiled volumes in print.

Studio Pierrot produced the first two anime seasons in Summer 2012 and 2013, each running for three cours. Funimation licensed the anime series in North America and released both seasons on DVD in January and March 2016, respectively.

Commemorating the release of the manga's 50th volume, a live-action film screened in Japan on April 19. The film, directed by Shinsuke Satou (Gantz, Death Note: Light Up the New World live-action film), grossed over US$50 million worldwide.

Kingdom won the Grand Prize at the 17th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize Awards in 2013.

Genuinely surprised, the first two didn't seem that popular.

I'll check out the first two seasons and hopefully can get through the CGI. Despite everyone trashing the show it has really high ratings so I'm interested to see what it's all about.

YES! I'm very happy about this news! I love Kingdom, it's one of my favourite action shows and tbh I had no real doubts about the continuation.

You should watch it .. animation gets better after 8 episodes. There aren't much blood but the story is accurately adopted. Don't listen to others talking crap about the anime.

Now all they need to do is announce a Space Brothers sequel and my life will be complete.

So, enjoy your anime 3rd season now, because not many anime have many seasons (usually after 2 / 3 seasons, some studio aren't made the continue of that anime)

I was told to just read the manga and I would enjoy it slightly more than the anime with its lack of 3D CGI messing up the beautiful scenery

well, I better scrape through the first two seasons. couldn't get passed the first three episodes, but without a u.s. release of the manga, that's my only way to catch up before this season, which sounds like it'll hopefully be better animated

Good news. I watched the first two seasons, the visuals were very bad but I liked the story and characters, I couldn't get into the manga though.

this season will cover a 100 chapter arc, so I expect it to be 2 cours. I really hope the animation is better this time.

Man, I love Kingdom. I'll hope they give us season 2 animation or even better than that.

Nov 8, 2019 2:02 PM by Taffy_x3

Wow, I'm really surprised and happy. The manga is amazing, and it's been a while since the 2nd season. 2020 is gonna be awesome!

I am kinda half glad by the news - loved the previous two seasons but story after them follows everyone other than Xin....he gets way too little attention. But still i'm going to watch this - glad they didn't forsake the series.

Meh

I had to force myself to watch 1st season. And then watched few epsidoes of 2nd season and stopped watching it. It is so boring.

I recommend watching Shoukoku no Altair or Arslan Senki instead of this. Way better

Nov 8, 2019 11:27 AM by thepath

Oh my i didn't expect this!

Nov 8, 2019 10:28 AM by xchyssa

Very good news. I've not seen the first two season yet, but I think I'll watch that to see how the adaptation of probably the best part of Kingdom will be.
