Shueisha announced a third anime season of the Kingdom manga series on Friday, scheduled to premiere on the NHK-G channel in April 2020. The new anime season will adapt the Gasshougun-hen (Coalition Army Arc), which spans from the 25th to the 32nd volume. The announcement comes in approximately five and a half years since the last season ended in 2014.

The third season is being led by a new team of production staff under the supervision of Yasuhisa Hara, the original creator. Masakazu Morita, Jun Fukuyama, and Rie Kugimiya are reprising their character roles as Li Xin (Li Shin), Ying Zheng (Ei Sei), and He Liao Diao (Karyou Ten).

Synopsis
During the Warring States period in China, Li Xin and Piao are two brother-like youngsters who dream of becoming Great Generals, despite their low status as orphaned slaves. One day, they encounter a man of nobility, who gives Piao an opportunity to undertake an important duty within the state of Qin's royal palace. Parting ways, Xin and Piao promise each other to one day become the greatest generals in the world. However, after a fierce coup d'état occurs in the palace, Xin meets with a dying Piao, whose last words spur him into action and lead him to encounter the young and soon-to-be king of Qin, Ying Zheng.

Although initially on bad terms, Xin and Zheng become comrades and start on a path filled with trials and bloodshed. Zheng's objective is to bring all the warring states under Qin, and Xin seeks to climb to the very top of the army ranks. Against a backdrop of constant tactical battle between states and great political unrest, both outside and within the palace, the two endeavor towards their monumental ambitions that will change history forever. The historical military-themed series has been serialized in Weekly Young Jump since 2006. Shueisha published the 55th volume (pictured right) on August 19, with the 56th volume planned for November 19 release. Kingdom has a cumulative 45 million copies of its compiled volumes in print.

Studio Pierrot produced the first two anime seasons in Summer 2012 and 2013, each running for three cours. Funimation licensed the anime series in North America and released both seasons on DVD in January and March 2016, respectively.

Commemorating the release of the manga's 50th volume, a live-action film screened in Japan on April 19. The film, directed by Shinsuke Satou (Gantz, Death Note: Light Up the New World live-action film), grossed over US$50 million worldwide.

Kingdom won the Grand Prize at the 17th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize Awards in 2013.

A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.

I know that the manga counterpart is an absolute blockbuster in Japan but I didn’t see this coming even then.

I’ve heard lots of negative feedback regarding the anime adaption due to the supposed terrible CGI use and censorship in particular but hopefully this won’t stop me from giving it a shot at least.

For manga readers, how many chapters have the first two seasons of the anime adaption covered and how likely is it that this upcoming 3rd Season will be a staggering 3-cour too?

About darn time for me to catch up to this illustrious series.

too bad the first two seasons are absolute produced garbage

i wish someone would remaster those first
that said the coalition arc is fucking amazing and since i read this and i quote:
"The third season is being led by a new team of production staff under the supervision of Yasuhisa Hara, the original creator. Masakazu Morita, Jun Fukuyama, and Rie Kugimiya are reprising their character roles as Li Xin (Li Shin), Ying Zheng (Ei Sei), and He Liao Diao (Karyou Ten)."
i am somewhat hopeful

i didn't watch the first two seasons
because it hurt my eyes physically
but i might watch this if the new production staff manage to adapt the arc well
i don't really care either way since im not expecting anything from them

but it would be nice to reexperience the coalition arc in the animated format
if the production values are good and i watch it it would be the first time i watch an anime starting in the third season lmao

the manga is absolutely fantastic and it honestly deserves a much better adaption

if this goes well maybe we'll get remasters of the trashy adaptations of s1+s2
(pretty sure we won't but one can dream)

negative feedback? the production values are a freaking joke, my 5 year old dog can produce better anime and voice act it alone

as for your questions
coalition arc starts chapter 257 and ends in chapter 356
so you can calculate and speculate urself

Previous seasons cover up to around chapter 261, with some parts skipped.

If it's a direct sequel, it's gonna be adapting a very long story arc, so breaking it up wouldn't be too surprising.

MAL TOP 5 HERE WE COME BOIS

I honestly was starting to think it would never happen with no end in sight for the manga, but I can't wait to see what this does for manga sales since this will be airing after the current war is wrapped up.

Hara overseeing it is the best possible news for this. I don't care about the whiny 'production value' and 'garbage cg' concerns, because even with them the first two seasons are great works with compelling direction and story. Hopefully it will just be more mature with the blood and gore.

Either way, we're going to to be seeing some unbelievably epic moments animated.

So much for it getting a reboot, maybe in a different timeline... I feel very bad for anyone who experienced Kingdom through the abomination anime adaptation that it got. You can read the manga people, it's never too late. Even if this has a different staff I still expect it to be garbage, the standards are very low after the first two seasons.

So, they finally remembered that there's ton of material they can adapt from this. I will just stick with the manga when I will get into the franchise since the adaptation doesn't really have a positive reception and I wouldn't want to miss anything from such a series due to the adaptation skipping stuff. Certainly, unexpected and very good news for the anime-onlies who enjoyed the series and were longing for a new season though.

Very good news, even tho based on the first 2 seasons we're not really happy as the Kingdom fans with the treatment we got but hopefully season 3 kicks it off finally to the high level this manga deserves and on top of it all they're adapting the best arc of the series so far so they better deliver.

I agree that S1 is awful, but I think S2 is quite good.
And I also think that this overhyped arc is not as great as many people said, it's maybe better than previous arcs, but not by much. I said this so people don't expect too much to end up (a little) dissapointed like me.

The Coalition arc is peak Kingdom, you don't get any better than this. Let's hope it gets better production values this time. Those manga sales warrants a better adaptation.

The Coalition arc is probably the best part of Kingdom. That said... I'll probably still just stick with the manga. But good news nonetheless

Very good news. I've not seen the first two season yet, but I think I'll watch that to see how the adaptation of probably the best part of Kingdom will be.

Meh

I had to force myself to watch 1st season. And then watched few epsidoes of 2nd season and stopped watching it. It is so boring.

I recommend watching Shoukoku no Altair or Arslan Senki instead of this. Way better

I am kinda half glad by the news - loved the previous two seasons but story after them follows everyone other than Xin....he gets way too little attention. But still i'm going to watch this - glad they didn't forsake the series.

Good news. I watched the first two seasons, the visuals were very bad but I liked the story and characters, I couldn't get into the manga though.

this season will cover a 100 chapter arc, so I expect it to be 2 cours. I really hope the animation is better this time.

well, I better scrape through the first two seasons. couldn't get passed the first three episodes, but without a u.s. release of the manga, that's my only way to catch up before this season, which sounds like it'll hopefully be better animated

I was told to just read the manga and I would enjoy it slightly more than the anime with its lack of 3D CGI messing up the beautiful scenery

So, enjoy your anime 3rd season now, because not many anime have many seasons (usually after 2 / 3 seasons, some studio aren't made the continue of that anime)

You should watch it .. animation gets better after 8 episodes. There aren't much blood but the story is accurately adopted. Don't listen to others talking crap about the anime.
