Synopsis

Luke fon Fabre, the spoiled son of a noble from the kingdom of Kimlasca-Lavaldear, has been confined inside his father's mansion ever since he was kidnapped seven years ago by a rival country, the Malkuth Empire. Now Luke's memory of the life he led before is missing, and a strange voice, which only he can hear, has been calling out to him ever since. One day while training with his mentor, Van Grants, a strange woman called Tear breaks into the mansion with the sole intent of taking Van's life. During the struggle Luke is transported far from home, along with Tear, and now that Luke has finally gained the freedom he's been dreaming of, what awaits him in the outside world will shatter everything he's ever known about himself.

Tales of the Abyss was originally developed by Namco for the Playstation 2 and released on the 10th anniversary of the “Tales” series. The anime first aired 3. Of October 2008 and it’s the fourth installment of the “Tales” series to be adapted into an anime. I liked the game a lot and thought I should review the anime for the users on MAL.
In the review below I’ve tried to include an objective opinion of both the fan treats and possible faults that a game adaption poses to viewers, who haven’t played the game. To this end a section called “Compared to the game” read more

Now, I should mention first that I have not played the Tales of the Abyss video game on which this anime is based. Despite that, I found it a great series to watch, with excellent characters and character development, brilliantly animated scenes, spectacular artwork, and a well-paced excellent story.

The story starts out slowly, but each character gives the viewer an immediate impression when introduced and one quickly develops feelings towards him or her, whether good or bad. Each character is developed to the fullest extent, with detailed backstories, distinct personalities, personal motivation and conflicts, and excellent designs. You can truly feel the read more

I've never played the game but the anime is unbearable except maybe the animation which is at most decent. I really should've dropped it after ep8, like what I usually do for all the other bad animes. I thought it was going to improve later on because of all the "Luke is going to change you have to watch this" crap from the game fans. Let me start with the most annoying part which is all the characters seem to have acquired the ability to teleport. One minute they are in City A then the next minute they are City B, and they keep doing read more

This anime started out good for me about a 8/10 but it just ended up having to many problems, to many holes for me... its a good watch if you are simply interested in good art and magical fights

But otherwise its a 5/10

Anime: Tears to Tiara
Both series are placed in a fantasy world and are centered around small groups of characters going on a quest with a war raging on in the background. Both anime are also based on games and characters represent variuos fighting styles (ranged, magical, melee).

Both are from the Tales series. Tales of the Abyss has a different universe than Tales of Symphonia.

It's one of the four Tales games that were made into anime. Short, but great nonetheless.

Anime: Scrapped Princess
Scrapped Princess and Tales of the Abyss have so much in common that fans of one are very likely to enjoy the other. They are both fantasy stories set in a pseudo Medieval setting where lost technology exists in the form of steam driven machines, where spells, sword fighting, prophecies and mystical battles and powerful magical/religious sects dominate. Royal but unfortunate leads and a sense of questing with plenty of travelling thrown in for good measure only make these anime even more alike.
