God Eater

The year is 2071. Humanity has been pushed to the brink of extinction following the emergence of man-eating monsters called "Aragami" that boast an immunity to conventional weaponry. They ravaged the land, consuming almost everything in their path and leaving nothing in their wake. To combat them, an organization named Fenrir was formed as a last-ditch effort to save humanity through the use of "God Eaters"—special humans infused with Oracle cells, allowing them to wield the God Arc, the only known weapon capable of killing an Aragami. One such God Eater is Lenka Utsugi, a New-Type whose God Arc takes the form of both blade and gun.

Now, as one of Fenrir's greatest weapons, Lenka must master his God Arc if he is to fulfill his desire of wiping out the Aragami once and for all. The monsters continue to be born en masse while the remnants of humanity struggle to survive the night. Only God Eaters stand between the Aragami and complete and total annihilation of the human race.

Refreshing: Main character is special but not overpowered (not a deus ex machina jerker).

Notable: Isn’t one sided when it comes to characters, shows a diverse set of characters with different personalities / goals / wishes. Story about the world revealed as main story develops.

Disappointing: Animation can be weird / cheap / choppy at times - examples: face expressions look unnatural (like that grandpa from Parasyte), somewhere only one frame is used for multiple seconds or 2 frames switch back and forth to illustrate wind on character’s face).

Mixed Feelings

God Eater will be getting a second season in 2022, and after finally watching the first season and not thinking much of it as a whole, I thought it was worth it to write a review and clarify why the hell I would say that but also be planning to watch and expecting a lot from the upcoming second season.

As that would imply, this is a strange one to review - I looked at each of the categories, Story/Art/Sound/Character and had to rate between 8-9 for each of them... but enjoyment only a 4? Overall 6? What the hell is this?

Technically, God Eater has all ... the tools and talent, everything it needs to be a fantastic Anime... but it just isn't a fantastic Anime. The art is stylized brilliantly, the CGI isn't great but because of the glossy, polished look of the art style and very spicy ufotable-ness. The feeling of the visuals is smooth and unique. Music selection for combat fits well with the edgy feel of the show, and the edgy feel of the show fits well enough because taking a step back to look at the world... it is a very bleak, very sad way of life that humanity has adopted in God Eater will make you shake your head and think "those poor apes aren't gonna make it through this one, are they?"

They tried to tell the backstory using flashback sequences, and they did that well enough. However the film grain effect IN ADDITION to traditional Anime art style was just too much. They should have just stuck with the art style difference, which was distinct enough from the semi-cgi lighting and beveled edge effects of the "present day" timeline on its own. There was also a perspective issue with the flashbacks much of the time, where they tried to angle and crop
the shots to represent that we were watching a screen... which is quite redundant, and again unecessary as the art style difference between timelines and presence of younger versions of characters is already very clear. Unfortunate, because the events that they decided to flash back to were compelling and so were the younger versions/alive versions of characters that are still alive or important in the "present day".

The backstory behind the post-apocalytpic setting is very relatable, compelling, and several of the characters who could be held directly responsible for the apocalypse stay on in the cast as leaders, villains, turncoats, and neutral parties still influencing what survives of humanity despite egrigious errors that doomed billions. Some of these characters appear in both the flashback sequences that slowly reveal the origins of the new dominant species on planet earth, monsters known as the "Aragami", and the "present day" timeline. These characters are immediately interesting and feel earnest in their dialogue and presentation. Also, both "main villains" that are revealed are fantastic and menacing, in very different ways - although neither could claim to be very original or unique in Anime overall.

Even the teenage dream team characters are really quite likeable. The ever popular mary sue/gary bruh combo do feel tacky, but only MC Lenka Utsugi has no experience or plausible cause for his genetic supremacy, or excuse for taking the reigns without adequate training or the blessing of his commanding officers but still having everything work out for (from him at least) the best etc etc. It's Anime, what can ya do. On the other hand, the other wunderkinds God Eater, Amellia, has a much more palatable backstory and is introduced very well, and ALMOST developed very well. See, Amellia has to take drugs to kill her sensation of fear and stabilize her otherwise fragile and frankly pathetic mental state, a burden she bears so that she can fulfill her chosen role as a God Eater. When she finally encounters the terrifying, intelligent monster that gleefully consumed her parents while she watched from hiding as a small child - the experience that set her on the path to become a God Eater, and the encounter she has been training and perparing for - she makes a series of bad decisions and gets reduced to a puddle of a person after being nearly killed. Having run out of drugs, and unable to recover in any way whatsoever from the psychological break that results from her being sober for the first time possibly in a decade, she becomes a burden to her comrades and reverts to a child-like persona for a significant amount of time. I liked the way they played around with her character... but it never felt quite consistent enough. There needed to be some resolution to her mental mess, but it felt like they just... skipped that part. She becomes a different person than when she was on the drugs, and rejoins the world of the useful without much fanfare.

Also, the "custodian" characters are a bit lackluster. There are some fun dynamics and side hustles going on between them like the working relationship between the Amamiya siblings and Rindou Amamiya's secret humanitarian efforts and how those end up driving a good part of the plot forward. However, though the characters themselves are compelling... they are written as typical inept "old foggies" that need to "pass the hope on to the next generation" who are obviously far more competent at everything anyways because you know, they're young and have super powers and stuff - inexperienced though they may be.

So what's good? The combat is good, the world is good, the monsters could use a bit of work but overall there are some fantastic scenes of them as well and particularly when it comes to the "S class" ones, or tier 5 or whatever the "grades" are. The character models, and their godarks weapons are also very cool, you have to give it to the art team - and as completely over the top as some scenes get with the healing and impaling through the thorax then still able to fight and heal and the fighting monsters on the roof of a plane, OUTSIDE THE PLANE, as comfortably as though it were a backyard patio... uh... yeah it's crazy. But 80s/90s video game crazy, and possibly an homage to that sort of thing, so I liked it. The backstory is good... but the story struggles. And unfortunately, that makes this series kinda suck despite being so watchable for its production values, underlying world, and strong character design.

Given how close this was to being a good show in general, and how good the tecnical rating is - I'm actually expecting a lot from season 2! Weird to be optimistic about that kind of thing, we've all seen where that usually gets you - but I suspect it isn't lost on the people putting out season 2 just how close season 1 was to being a real banger. I will hope so until proven otherwise.

Worth a watch.

When i first watched this show I sort of had that odd feeling. Mid way through it felt like a complete rip off of Shingeki No Kyojin/Attack on Titan. No offense tho.
Although the art of the show felt very unique, the story lacked alot, not to mention the ending has to be the worst of any kind. Instead of answering the needed questions it instead opened new boxes. What the hell was this?
Overall 1.5/10. That too cause of the art style. The story sucks.
The way in which it was similar to AOT was the monsters beyond a certain point, humanity living within a certain ...
