An anime adaptation of Sucker Punch Productions' Ghost of Tsushima video game was announced by Crunchyroll at the Sony Group Corporation's CES 2025 press conference on Monday. The anime series will draw inspiration from the original game and its multiplayer co-op expansion, Ghost of Tsushima: Legends. Set to premiere exclusively on Crunchyroll in 2027, the anime will share the same title as the Legends expansion.

Takanobu Mizuno (Star Wars: Visions) is helming the anime at Kamikaze Douga. Screenwriter Gen Urobuchi (Psycho-Pass) is handling the series composition. The anime series is being produced by Crunchyroll, Aniplex, Sony Music, and PlayStation Productions.

Developed by Sucker Punch Productions and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, Ghost of Tsushima was released on PlayStation 4 in July 2020, with a multiplayer expansion subtitled Legends released in October that year. The game was also ported to PlayStation 5 in August 2021 and on PC in May 2024. A sequel, titled Ghost of Yotei, is scheduled to be released on PlayStation 5 in 2025.

Game Synopsis
The year is 1274. Samurai warriors are the legendary defenders of Japan—until the fearsome Mongol Empire invades the island of Tsushima, wreaking havoc and conquering the local population. As one of the last surviving samurai, you rise from the ashes to fight back. But honorable tactics won't lead you to victory. You must move beyond your samurai traditions to forge a new way of fighting—the way of the Ghost—as you wage an unconventional war for the freedom of Japan. (Source: Sucker Punch Productions)

I haven’t played the game but I’ve heard great things about it. I’ve seen the gameplay and visuals though, the studio adapting this will have to go out of their way to match that quality and quality screenwriters will obviously have to be around too.

It is mentioned, it's Kamikaze Douga.

Given how good the graphics/visuals is for the game, best to experience that way.

Adaptation from Pop Tim Epic studio? With Urobuchi as screenwriter? I don't even know what to say lmao. Also, how Western will this be? Just a bigger version of the projects they used to do for Netflix?

@perseii Well, at least this could pave the way for truly anime adaptations of AAA games instead of giving them another "anime" like Castlevania.

@wildhood Judging by all these leaks and general criticism of the choice of direction for the sequel, the decision to accompany its release with an adaptation of the original really makes sense.

@Varendant Personally, I really enjoyed Revengers, but it didn't feel at all like a high-profile original show from a well-known author. Although even so, Gen wrote a tragic ending a much much better than some people, lmao.

I loved the game, but not sure if there are tons of stories to tell in this franchise. It has gorgeous visuals and overflowing atmosphere, but the story and the characters weren't too memorable for me.

Unless they're just making any kind of samurai story and plastering a "Ghost of Tsushima" label on it.

Aww... Legends? I'm still looking forward to it, though.

@Old_School_Akira for years now since 2016 with the partnership with Kadokawa. Been in a big increase since 2019 for crunchyroll. Sony been in the anime production since 1959 with 1001 arabian nights and since 1995 with Aniplex and 2005 with A-1 pictures as subsidiaries.

They should have made this announcement in late 2026.
