@Ahuri: I get your point, but 20-34 years old is firmly in seinen demographic territory rather than shounen territory. There are also more viewers within the josei demographic than there are for the shounen and shoujo demographics combined.

Still, I heard that Shounen Jump has an audience among older readers looking for an escape from mundane daily life as well, so it might not completely fail if they execute it properly, even if I have my doubts over certain choices.

Gackt? Seriously? LOL.

Well, I just finished the manga, and while it was a slow start it became really interesting. Can't wait for the anime now.

Shiki is a shounen? From when? o.o;

It's published in Square Jump, therefore it's a shounen. The label only depends on the magazine's targeted audience, not on the overall feel of the series.

Therefore it's only called a shounen. I wouldn't ever call this manga shounen if someone asked me about it.

Also, what's the idea behind animating a shounen series in noitaminA? The timeslot is aimed at older female audiences, so why adapt something aimed at a young male audience? I guess that Gackt is going to be the main draw for this anime as far as its target audience is concerned.

noitaminA was created with this idea in mind, but it's gone a long way since then and the targeted audience isn't really the same anymore. Taken from 2ch, the audience for the April 22nd episodes of Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei & Saraiya Goyou :

Overall: 1.6%
Kids (Age 4-12): 0.0%
Teenagers: 0.9%
20-34 y/o men: 2.7%
35-49 y/o men: 0.4%
50+ y/o men: 0.5%
20-34 y/o women: 1.0%
35-49 y/o women: 0.3%
50+ y/o women: 0.1%

The older female category has risen up to 1.0% on another occasion, but the figures for younger men are always dominating. Of course, it's not like they've completely given up on the idea of pulling women in, what with casting GACKT amongst other things.

And who's Gackt? Ah, a seiyuu. He's voicing Seishirou, a character with very little apperance in manga, as for now at least.

Oh ho, He's not just any old seiyuu. He's also known as the King of Devils (not joking)

How does supernatural horror=aimed at young males?

I was expecting Toei or DEEN, to be honest.

Toei should stick with their romance shounen anime, and DEEN with their crap. I'm so fucking happy that it's not DEEN who's making this. If Madhouse didn't have Highschool of the Dead, then maybe they would also make Shiki... But i don't know Daume either, so i'll just wait to see how they'll make it.

The director is Tetsuro Amino, (in)famous for his work on SD Gundam and Macross 7, two black sheep in two famous mecha franchises. Again, totally out of the left field.

And what does mecha have to do with horror/mystery manga?

Fuck Higurashi, this series is way better since Moe characters are out of the game.

'bout time this series gets animated anyhow.

lol I know. Moe will make me bleed my brain out. I want anime that talk about the story then the freaking moe girls.
For the record, Higurashi IS about the story (and I've never heard ANYONE mention Higurashi being moe because it certainly isn't), but the anime does not delve into this greatly until the second season.

In ways does about 50% of it, at least that good. Higurashi do have story to it. But i looking for less girls in it.
so yeah.
