Illustrator Sung-Rak Jang, best known for the Solo Leveling manhwa series, died on Saturday due to chronic health issues leading to cerebral hemorrhage. He was 37 years old. The funeral was held privately by his friends and family.

Yen Press, the company which publishes the manhwa in English, posted an English translation of the obituary by Korean manhwa production studio REDICE:

On July 23rd, 2022, the artist of the Solo Leveling manhwa, Mr. Sung-rak Jang has passed away due to health issues.

As his family wished, a small funeral was held at his mother’s residence, attended by family and close friends.

Mr. Jang had been struggling with a health condition for a long time, and he passed away from cerebral hemorrhage stemming from his condition.

We would like to thank the readers for all the love and support you’ve shown for Solo Leveling, and we ask that everyone prays for Mr. Jang to rest in a better place.

The staff of Solo Leveling and all of us at REDICE Studio pray for Mr. Jang, who always held a deep love for his work and the readers.

Respectfully,

REDICE Studio

Jang, also known by his nickname Dubu, began drawing the manhwa adaptation of Chugong's action-adventure web novel on the Kakao website in March 2018. The 179th and final chapter of the manhwa was released last December.

The chapters have been collected and published by D&C Media since September 2019. The sixth volume, which collects chapters 82-97, was released in Korea on Monday. Yen Press began releasing the collected volumes in English in March 2021, with the fifth volume planned for a September 20 release.

An anime adaptation of the manhwa by A-1 Pictures is scheduled to premiere in 2023.

Jang was the CEO of REDICE, which was established in 2018.

Very talented guy, feelings aside, this is a major loss for the manhwa industry, considering he did some of the very best stuff I have ever seen.
RIP

He is the best comic artist I have seen in my life. An absolute legend and arguably the person most responsible for making manhwa mainstream in the West. A truly god-tier artist who brought the long strip format to life. Solo Leveling felt as alive as watching an anime. The manhwa would be nothing without him.

2019-2021, Solo Leveling was the best source of joy for millions of people during covid. We will never forget. RIP king

Never read the series, but this news is terribly saddening. A talented, young life lost like that must be such a big loss to the loved ones and the industry. Rest in peace.

I’m so sad to hear this! That man made such great art when it comes to action scenes in Solo Leveling. May he rest in peace, he should never be replaced 💔

His health issues hindered with his work when he was working on SL. I never would have wanted to believe his condition could be this bad. I'm really grateful for his work and being able to view his incredible talent. It's especially sad to see him pass at 37. May he rest in peace.

I heard that he was fighting this illness for a while now, and I had no idea

But all I can say is that I'm immensely grateful to him for taking the time out of his rough life to bring us an absolute masterclass of art week after week for one of the most hype series we've seen in years with Solo Leveling, and I hope that he and his family can rest easy knowing that he was greatly loved, appreciated and respected in life and in death

It sucks that we won't see his amazing art anymore but I'm glad that I was alive to see it either way

RIP brother, the gods took you way too soon
