Young Jump magazine announced on its official website on Friday that manga author
Makoto Ogino died on April 29 at age 59. The cause of death was renal failure. A private funeral held by his family members took place on May 8.
Ogino was born in the Gifu Prefecture in May 1959. He made his manga author debut in 1985 in Young Jump with
Kujakuou (
Peacock King), and was presented the with the Young Manga Award in the same year. The series ended in 1989, spanning over 17 volumes.
AIC and Studio 88 produced a three-episode
OVA between 1988 and 1991.
Madhouse adapted the manga again into a two-episode
OVA in 1994. A live-action film adaptation premiered in 1988.
Prior to his death, Ogino was working on
Kujakuou: Sengoku Tensei and
Kujakuou: Rising.

Update May 11
Publishers Shogakukan and Leed announced on Friday that Ogino had finished the final chapters of both of his ongoing series. The chapters will be featured in the August 2019 issues of
Big Comic Spirits and
Comic Ran, respectively, on June 27.
Kujakuou: Sengoku Tensei will end with its fifth volume on July 30, and
Kujakuou: Rising currently has nine volumes in print.
