This is the part where I should tell you all about myself, right? Well let’s start off by talking about some good old video games.
Let me tell you a story that starts with Fire Emblem and ends with Anime. Until around a year ago, I was a casual anime fan and I hated Fire Emblem. But that all changed very quickly. Last spring, all the experiences that I ever had with fire Emblem were bad. I tried playing Warriors and hated the gameplay and I tried one of the older games and hated the gameplay. But last year around May, I decided that I wanted to do a 20,000 word game review over summer break so I picked out a few games that I think had enough content to make a review that long.
Fire Emblem wasn’t even on that list, but as I was making my final decision, I saw a gameplay video/review of Three Houses and I immediately gave it a shot and fell in love. I loved the game so much that in about two months, it became one of my three most favorite games of all time. One of the things that I loved the most about the game was the amazing voice cast. It was because of this game that I started following voice actors and the two that I liked the most were Billy Kametz and Erica Mendez.
Then, in the middle of October, somebody recommended Shield Hero to me. At the time, I was still just a casual anime fan, so I didn’t really watch, but then when I realized that both of them were the main characters in the dub, I had to watch it. I fell in love pretty quickly and after that, I wanted to watch more stuff that had them in it, and that kept leading to more and more anime. So not only is Fire Emblem: Three Houses my favorite Switch game and 3rd most favorite game of all time, it’s also what really got me into anime.
I also owe a lot to Genshin Impact.
I have a weird relationship when it comes to Genshin Impact, both good and bad. A long time ago, like in very early 2020 or even late 2019, was when I first heard about the game and I was getting pretty excited for it. Then during the summer, I had a chance to take part in the beta. I played a lot and I streamed a lot. When the game was fully released, I kept streaming and I started my own personal account too. Within a week of release, I had put more than 100 hours into my streaming account and 10 into my personal one.
Thanks to streaming a lot during the beta, I was doing very well to the point where wishes were basically free just from streams. At the time, it was basically my “career” since we were in the middle of a lockdown, but in October I basically quit the game for two reasons. Thanks to playing so much during the beta, I got through most of the content really quickly so I figured I’d slow down and wait for more stuff to be added before jumping back in, and I had internet problems.
The problem was that I never got back in. That October I wrote a review of the game giving it a 9.5 out of 10 and then I went nearly two years without playing again. That ended up being the biggest regret of my life because I loved the game and I was making good money from the streams. But it didn’t end there because the longer I went without playing, the more disconnected I felt, and the more annoyed I became with its success and seeing it all over the place. I remember going to AnimeNYC last year and it was basically sponsored by the game and I couldn’t stand it.
I built up a good stream following and loved the game, and then I just threw it all away and watched as it became one of my most hated games. Until I finally got back into it this summer. That’s right, I started a brand new personal account and I was able to re-addict myself with the game to the point where it’s become one of my favorites again. The entire saga between me and Genshin Impact has been so painful but also so amazing.
You might be wondering what I like to play. Well these are my top 10 most favorite video games of all time.
1. Guardian’s Crusade
2. Pokemon Gold
3. Fire Emblem: Three Houses
4. Minecraft
5. Genshin Impact
6. Persona 4 Golden
7. Stardew Valley
8. Horizon Zero Dawn
9. Skyrim
10. Sim City 2000
What else is there to say about video games? I have more than 500 Switch games in addition to a PS4, PS Vita, 3DS, GBA, and Steam. My favorite genres would probably be RPG’s and Adventure while I usually can’t stand 2D platformers, fighting games, metrovania games, or shoot em ups. I also love writing about games whenever I get the chance. I have written hundreds of reviews, guides, and other articles for a variety of places and I’m always looking for more people to play with.
Next up, it wouldn’t hurt to talk about movies.
I love movies. Even before the days of AMC A-List and Movie Pass, I would go and see 50 to 100 movies per year. A few days before making this profile I saw Bullet Train in IMAX and it quickly became one of my most favorite movies of all time. Right now my two most favorite movie series are Mission Impossible and How To Train Your Dragon. I love anything that has good action, is funny, or involves some grand adventure.
Right now I try to go to see a movie in theaters at least once every week and I buy as many DVD’s as I can. I already filled up one massive case that can fit more than 500 DVD’s and I’m already working my way towards filling up another. That’s just on physical media too, I buy plenty of digital only codes to fill up my vudu library and I love talking about movies whether we’re talking about the MCU, Disney, or some indie movie.
Unfortunately, I think that 2022 has been really bad when it comes to movies and I think that streaming services are killing the industry. Less than a decade ago, every movie was in theaters. In theory, you could see whatever movie came out by going to the theater. But now, with so many different streaming services offering different movies, it might be the same amount of movies being released but if you want to see them all, you have to have like 8 different subscriptions.
As a result, I’ve only seen 19 movies so far this year and I’m on pace to see 23, compared to 40 movies last year and 31 in 2020. The variety of what’s available doesn’t seem to be too great this year either but next year looks to be much better.
I also have a big love for rating movies when I see them. I use letterboxd religiously and while I don’t review movies there often, I always added a movie to my list whenever I see something and give it a rating.
Over HERE you can see every movie that I’ve ever seen and see what was the score that I assigned to it. You can even find a couple reviews that I’ve written somewhere on my profile. Over HERE is where you can see my list of my 45 most favorite movies of all time. Here’s a sneak peek of that list.
Just a few more things to talk about. Next, I want to talk about the light novel that I’m slowly working on.
I love writing. Not only do I do a ton of journalism stuff, but a lot of creative writing also. I’ve written a few short books that haven’t been published yet, and a ton of short stories over the years. There’s this one idea that I’ve had for a few years that was very thought out but the concept and execution never seemed to work out. But then once I started to really get into anime, I realized that this idea fit way more into the anime and light novel space than your standard American stories.
The more I got into anime, the more my story started to really have a place to be so I started taking what I’ve learned from anime and began to convert the story into a light novel/anime style. But what’s it about? Well I’m going to talk a bit about it here in the hopes of maybe getting some reasons to keep going with it.
It’s basically your standard power isekai but with a few twists. Dude goes to another world and becomes kind of OP. The story begins when he’s 28 years old, five years after he comes back to earth. He basically gets the ability to travel freely between worlds and he basically becomes a mercenary. He lives his life normally on earth but his day job/career is going to different worlds for daily work and odd jobs.
There’s two big concepts that I had for this story. The main concept is that pretty much everybody gets isekaid. Lots of people from other worlds get Isekaid to earth after they die and this creates a theme where every piece of media (every cartoon, show, movie, book, game) is based on the creators previous life, meaning that every piece of fiction has a real world world in the story. Though most people start to lose their memories of their previous life as a baby/kid.
The second concept is that there are many people who haven’t forgotten or who travel to earth, and this creates many different communities of people from other worlds on earth. So for instance one constant theme in the story is that there are people from other worlds in the government in order to keep certain things hidden and to protect certain groups. Like, there’s literally a whole section in the story on the main guy getting paid in gold from another world, bringing it back to earth, and exchanging it with specific people for money and that way he doesn’t get questioned about the gold (or have to worry about taxes)
There’s lots of creative moments where the dynamic of both concepts not only the worlds that he visits, but earth too, and that allowed for a lot of creative storytelling.
It’s also a romance story but that’s a tale for another day. In my head, the two main characters are voiced by Eric Vale and Kristen McGuire. I’ll be happy to talk more about the story to whoever wants to listen. Right now the whole thing is at around 60,000 words.
