The official website for the Hula Fulla Dance original anime film revealed four supporting cast members and a teaser trailer on Tuesday. The film, originally scheduled to be released in early Summer 2021, will now open in theaters on December 3.

Cast
Kanna Kamakura: Karen Miyama (FLCL Alternative)
Ranko Takigawa: Miu Tomita (Watashitachi no Mirai)
Ohana Ka'aihue: Kaori Maeda (Love Live! Nijigasaki Gakuen School Idol Doukoukai)
Shion Shirasawa: Emiri Suyama (Aikatsu Friends!)

Haruka Fukuhara is starring as the protagonist Hiwa Natsunagi. Dean Fujioka and Yuuki Yamada are voicing the characters Ryouta Suzukake and Kazuto Taira, respectively.

Shinya Watada (Gundam Build Divers) is directing the film at Bandai Namco Pictures, with chief director Seiji Mizushima (Beatless). Reiko Yoshida (Koe no Katachi) is penning the script and Hiroko Yaguchi (Beatless) is designing the characters.

Hula Fulla Dance is the second of three anime projects for "Zutto Ouen. Project 2011+10." The goal of the project is to revitalize tourism in prefectures affected by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami, including Fukushima Prefecture, the setting of the film.

This looks very pretty and nice. As a tourism-based feature, it had to be shelved thanks to the epidemic, but maybe the coming Olympics will improve things and it can be released on time or hopefully a bit early.

Being able to adapt things well doesn't mean being good at writing original scripts.
Well, I said probably.
Besides, Kaleido Star was an anime original and people seem to love that, and she actually co-created the manga I mentioned at the end of my post and people also loved that back in the day, including myself even though I don't think it's as amazing as I thought it was anymore. People liked Reiko Yoshida's work on Tokyo Mew Mew so much that when it got a sequel without her involvement, all people talked about was how Mary Sue-ish the main character was and that the series was only good when she was writing it. She doesn't only work on adapting things, you know.

Well, I hope you're really not wrong. I had little experience with shoujo screenwriters.

Probably might be; the scriptwriter has not only been known for A Silent Voice, but also worked on other stuff with their own fans like Aria, Digimon, Girls & Panzer, K-On, Kaleido Star, Violet Evergarden, et cetera... she's even worked on one of my favorite Studio Ghibli movies and this one manga from 2000 that I used to love as a child (I wonder if anyone here recognizes it lol).

This is so cute and whimsical with a pretty cast, much better than the last hula anime that had visuals that looked like reject Lisa Frank designs.

Foul tarnished pretend to be lord!

Now seriously it looks good, its does .. shame it a movie.

The fact that this is going to be a movie actually saves us from whining about cultural appropriation on resources like ANN or Anime Feminist. Or vice versa, highly politicized reviews, where journalists will pretend that the diverse caste is some kind of message from the authors.

Wasn’t particularly looking forward to this, in all honesty. But it’s a pity nonetheless. Here’s to hoping for a good premiere later this year!
