Can Isao Takahata actually be considered "a legend by his own right"? He's a notable figure at Ghibli but never notable as an anime director, and giving a $50 million anime movie to him was always a suicidal thing to do for Ghibli.

Don't you think, you could have been brainwashed by some elitists, or even worse, by some retarded propagandist, if you sound 100% convinced to such "fact".

No, cause even a cockroach knows that that abomination is not worth $50 million and agreeing with an alzheimic old man is even worse, the stuff about him admitting his own work being sh!t is true btw andthe wind rises is an insult to koreans and chinese.
And ghibli is doing a horrible ccg film now, but that kaio guy didn't mention that did he? XD

Well, thank you for this post, it was interesting and informative, I was also wondering about the situation of Ghibli and anime fans in Japan.

ichii_1 said:
Lol that gif sure looks good for $50 million dollars lmfao XD denial is all I can say.
Ghibli's new stuff is gonna be ccg and I'm sure $100 million still won't make it have better animation than ef paradise since they're gonna steal 95% of it and have people like you defend them cause they want to be in the sophisticated anime viewer club.

Cool article, now where's the one where he says TV, media and his own works sucks and need to be thrown away all together and everyone should go outside? along with a lot of other hypocritical stuff XD

Generalizing anime fans is what your doing just like that dinosaur, your preconceived notions that almost all anime fans are what you believe them to be is what's wrong, you've been brainwashed by the elitist people you've been hanging out with.

So far the only studio I've seen to be able to shrug off that trend with second seasons is Sunrise with the likes of Seed Destiny, Code Geass, Horizon and Love Live where not only is there seemingly no decay but averages actually went up with the second season defying all logic of how these things work.

Addressing your claims... Code Geass and Horizon actually saw drops in their averages, but you are right about Love Live! and Seed Destiny.

(2013) 29,194 → (2014) 62,844 + 115.3%● Love Live! (ラブライブ!)
(2002) 58,589 → (2004) 68,732 + *17.3% Kidou Senshi Gundam SEED (機動戦士ガンダムSEED)
(2011) 21,814 → (2012) 20,881 - **4.3% Kyoukaisenjou no Horizon (境界線上のホライゾン)
(2006) 45,367 → (2008) 42,690 - **5.9% Code Geass Hangyaku no Lelouch (コードギアス 反逆のルルーシュ)

Sunrise is not immune to sequel drops, no matter how much you want them to be.

Kind of another sign of the times. When a $50 Million adaptation of a classic culturally significant folk tale like The Tale of The Bamboo Cutter by possibly anime's most storied studio and a legend in his own right like Isao Takahata is looking to get lapped several times over in disc sales by some CGI fanservice sci-fi romp by some hot topic writer that looks thin on substance and like it cost a fraction of what Kaguya Hime did to make I think that really says a lot at where anime and it's fanbases interest is at right now at least when it comes to the sorts of things investors are going to want to see green lit.

That's just kind of what anime is about now and what Japan seems to want more of. It is what it is.

No, it's because that miyazuki alzheimic dinosaur insulted the fans and this is the result, the death of Ghibli, and he insulted them AFTER his movie came out LOLOLOL he knew his movie would flop if he said it before, a shameless and money hungry old man.
And the kaguya film is made from a bunch of criminals who stole all the money and then tries to justify this quality of animation as $50 million, disgusting they should be in jail and all the movies, except for 1 or 2, all suck anyways so nothing of value was lost.
And Ghibli is supporting the sh!tty transition to ccg, they are a bane to anime itself.

Anime fans can be extremely dumb, IMO they probably deserved it whatever he said, which last I checked was something like people involved in anime don't spend enough time interacting with real people which strikes me as demonstrably true when you see how writers THINK people interact in a lot of recent stuff. That gif also looks phenomenal, nice to see that kind of hand drawn style in animation where usually a 360 degree pan would be done in CGI now. They've been involved in exactly one CGI work ever that's actually being animated by Polygon Pictures (Knights of Sidonia, Animatrix) with production co-operation with Ghibli and it's a TV series being made after they've basically shut down much of the studio so I can hardly call them a bane to anime or one of the principal supporters of that transition considering they're the junior studio in that relationship. You want to blame someone for that I'd sooner look at the likes of the people that made Expelled from Paradise.

Interesting views you have though for sure, very MAL really.

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/131872-Hayao-Miyazaki-Anime-Suffers-Because-the-Industry-is-Full-of-Otaku

Here we go. Personally I think this is an extremely fair assessment of things and people can get butthurt or offended by it all they want but I kind of agree. It's one thing to appreciate something as an art form, but it's another to fall into obsession and the kind of rhetoric and disregard for basic standards of decency and normal human interaction of the kind you see on say...oh...MAL a lot of the time. When people argue to me that's the natural state of things I can't just help but shake my head and say "maybe in your world but not in mine". I like anime, but I also like to keep my appreciation and interest in it at a healthy level and remember that there are other things that are more important in the long run and then I can still maintain at least some level of dignity while taking up the hobby of watching it.

Hopefully somebody gets what I'm trying to say here and doesn't just take this as an insult. Self-reflection and awareness is the overall idea.

Yup.

Also, Princess Kaguya is absolutely fantastic. Watch it right now (of course legally). I'll definitely add it to my Ghibli bluray collection once it releases over here.

I really need to watch The Tale of Princess Kaguya. And a lot of other Ghibli movies for that matter. I'm planning to over Christmas break though :)

The first volume was a massive drop off of the first season too. Similar to Persona 4 another A-1 adaptation of a popular license has decayed from a 30-40K seller to under 20K. That's kind of normal though.
