At the media event "Kadokawa Game Studio Media Briefing 2013 Autumn" held today at Tokyo Kokusai Forum, it was announced that the online browser card battle game "Kantai Collection -KanColle-" (Fleet Collection) will get a TV anime adaptation. It was also announced that the game will get a spinoff, named "KanColle Kai", on PlayStation Vita platform. The anime is targeted to be released in summer 2014. Staff information has not been disclosed yet, although it has been made clear that the same cast from the game will continue their roles in the anime.

KanColle was created by Kadokawa Games and distributed by DMM. It is a card based military simulation game that runs on a free-to-play freemium model. The cards are naval vessels from WWII Japan with attributes based historical data and anthropomorphized as cute girls named "Kanmusu" (艦娘 Warship Girl). The player undertakes the role of an "admiral" and needs to build, repair, and train the personified warships and then send them to complete various missions, gaining points and resources in the process which in turn can be used to raise the level of the fleet or acquire new kanmusu cards. Throughout the game, the player has various opportunities to interact with the kanmusu, giving them instructions as well as receiving reports and hearing issues from them.

The game was released on April 23, 2013 and the original plan was to target 100,000 registered users; however, by word-of-mouth, the game grew at phenomenal speed which often resulted in capacity issue as demand got too high and new servers could not be added in time to cope. By mid-July, over 200,000 users registered, which doubled to 400,000 at mid-August. The latest figure released on September 15th had that number doubled again to 800,000, and it has inspired a large number of fan arts and doujin creations already. There was also an "official anthology comic" released mid-September and currently there is a 4-koma manga being serialized on the online manga site Famitsu Comic Clear. Three light novels and more manga adaptations have also been announced earlier this month.

Part of the cast information (only part of the seiyuu cast in the game has been disclosed):

Aircraft Carrier Akagi - Fujita Saki
Aircraft Carrier Kaga - Iguchi Yuka
Aircraft Carrier Shoukaku - Nomizu Iori
Light Aircraft Carrier Zuihou - Komatsu Mana

The cover of the latest anthology manga with cover drawn by the writer of Yumekui Merry (a self-confessed big fan of KanColle, even asking for KanColle related work in open) looks pretty good. Really love the Kongo 4 sisters!

You think "Playstation Vista" is a bad typo, the official Vita game site still says "PlayStaion®Vita" LOL

And still just says 2014, no month yet, sigh... but at least the Vita is finally getting a good solution of games and is NOT region locked so you can play them here!

I'm hooked on the game already so all I can say at this point is... my body is ready.

I've been following this after being addicted to Battlestations, then crossed-over to Arpeggio of the Blue Steel (Aoki Hagane no Arpeggio) then somehow found this.

I've been fascinated by IJN ships for awhile now, and this along with my anime/manga addiction leaves me wanting more. Can't wait for the ENG versions to arrive, if ever.
P.S. If it does arrive to NA, I have the Fletchers & Iowas are considered...

Megumi Nakajima? It's been a long time since I heard her voice.
Guess you do not watch Kimi no Iru Machi in this season? Since she voices the main heroine Yuzuki there. And then there is Mondaiji, Busou Shinki and Rinne no Lagrange before that...

Megumi Nakajima? It's been a long time since I heard her voice.

What!? No Rie Kugie? But I want to see tsundere destroyers!

I'm expecting KanColle will be better than Girls und Panzer, although Girls und Panzer is already epic. In all honesty, I've yet to see cute girls in naval battle.

Personally, after looking at the wiki page on it provided in the first post, I'm not in the slightest bit interested in either the anime or game. It wouldn't be the first card game out there amongst computers or tablets, and the whole female only, as well as the sample cards provided on the wiki, turns me off. Female only alone, I wouldn't mind so much, but the art they seem to have just has no appeal to me - especially compared to other card games, both "anime" and "non-anime" style, I've seen (and play) for tablets. So...one less game out there for me to personally be concerned over.

Though as far as anime go, I really don't understand how this can get an anime so soon unless it's simply for publicity. A good chunk of anime the past so many years that were based off existing or non-existing card games haven't done the best, or even got another season from my knowledge, so unless they're going to take a Hetalia approach, I don't see this lasting.

I once again failed to get a spot in a server today ;_;

Don't give up, you will get in eventually :)
I've been playing for a week and even though I was conscious about the amount of popularity it was getting, I didn't think it'd reach the level of an anime adaptation anytime soon.

I think I have written about this in a few of the earlier posts in this thread. Basically there is no single narrative, or "lore", behind the game (besides the historical data and details anyway), which is why I said there is a lot of room and flexibility when it comes to the story for the anime.

Well, there is an ongoing 4-koma web manga and some chapters are already translated: http://www.famitsu.com/comic_clear/se_kancolle/ (sadly there is no entry for it here).

It doesn't necessarily show the anime's direction, but it's definitely a way to delve a little bit more into the series (in a comedic way in this case). I would recommend it. There are some gags depending on the knowledge about some historical data and backgrounds of the ships... something you mentioned before.

My guess is that similar approach will be taken for KanColle, but with the added care that historical trivia will be abundantly inserted (as per Girls und Panzer).

Evidence suggests that you re probably right with your guess.

I was talking about this week's manga and LN sales thread which has yet to be posted. :3 You mentioned something about you doing it instead of Snow, so I was wondering when you'll do it.
Again it's you who are impatient for the ssales ranking, aren't you? ;-) Well, because Snowical told me he wants to handle himself, so I have left the task to him.

I sure am. But only because Magi's part of this week's ranking. ^^

A lot of them can be traced back to pixiv. Search by the tag 艦これ and you will be able to find a lot of fan art on it. I am sure some western sites also house some of those pics but I did not check those sites.

One interesting thing I found is there is actually a practice among the illustrators that if a certain girl is drawn chances of drawing the card of that girl will rise (of course there is absolutely no proof of it). Some of the most popular girls like Shimakaze, Tenryuu, Kongou all get many fanart pics drawn because of such wish.
