Do you guys think driving an automatic makes a man seem less manly?

Today I had a debate with some female friends and I was kinda surprised when they said they prefer a guy who drives a manual because it's more manly. Do you guys agree with this or does it come from outdated stereotypes?

It's more manly to ride a bike instead.

Anyway, I think it's quite smart to drive automatic cars, for the following reasons:
  • It's safer, because there are only 2 foot pedals, so you can always have a foot on the brake pedal, instead of switching from gas to brake first.
  • There's less attrition, because the automated shifting process is always optimal.
  • The acceleration is much smoother, which increases driving comfort.

@Daviljoe193 When do you think @removed-user will take over this thread?

I don't care. I wouldn't even have a car if I lived in a more urbanized area, cars are money sinks.

I don't care either way. I drive stick but I've driven automatic many times and I believe that automatic is amazing for crappy towns with tons of traffic.

I definitely wouldn't judge someone's "manliness" (whatever that means) based on something as trivial as their car's transmission. I don't know anyone who owns or drives a manual car, and I myself have no idea how to drive a manual car, so this isn't something that has ever crossed my mind.

I agree it's dumb to judge someone's "manliness" by their car but I'm kinda surprised that so many people have never driven a manual, I guess it is mostly popular with car enthusiasts

I don't think anyone finds driving a manual car as "manly." If that were the case you'd think a bunch of men would prefer women who drove "feminine" automatics. Maybe some people just associated manuals with expensive or cool looking cars? Anyone sitting in an cool car looks cooler (and maybe sexier?) than driving a boring mobile.

Honestly I think you're a complete idiot if you get a license today and do it on manual. You're putting in more work for something that's already completely obsolete in most parts of the world

Dad says he wastes less fuel in manual. Nothing is as manly as madly cutting costs with gears and driving a 2.0 motor pick up in the middle of the city.

Now the real question, if you had a Ferrari, they would be saying it is not really manly because of the gear?

I guess it proves we're not as skilled with a vehicle than others who know how to drive both. When I took driving school I had the opportunity to learn how to drive a stick shift, but ended up passing. I kind of regret that decision now. 🤔

Aren't like real expensive sports cars not even manual anymore nowadays? No one is impressed you must change the gears yourself in your compact car.

Well obviously since driving a manual takes more skill and they would look more capable in the eyes of people (who don't know how to do a certain thing like drive a manual). And women naturally like more capable men.

My dad taught me how to drive manual and had to take a driving test with a manual car. But I prefer automatic and currently drive one, since it's much less of a hassle and more convenient.

Manuals are for wealthy joy riders who have free time and a pass to break the law the only other type being offroaders. Anyone who has that for a commute car is going through a midlife crisis.

I think the expectations put on boys and men to look, and act a certain way by society and even own certain things along with prohibited things they can't have, even extends to how they transport themselves to a job is misandrist and stupid. But not surprising.

Driving makes you less manly in general. True men have their girls drive them around... or an AI (hopefully, this will become a reality in the next decade and humans will be banned from getting behind the wheel)

@149597871 Self driving cars are nowhere near real life viable.
Humans suck at a lot of things, but driving is something they are better at for the foreseeable feature.
There is one way to reduce the number of cars, and that's building lots of trains...

Most of the data shows that Waymo is already safer than human drivers in the locations it operates, over several times, in fact. Tesla is not, but that's no surprise.

I doubt this happened in the big 25, but even so, I think it's irrelevant. In fact, in a couple decades' time, we won't even be talking about stick shifts. It would be like debating whether it's more manly to carry cash than a card.

@Absurdo_N Yeah it's my favorite sitcom; it's about a group of classmates at a community college. The clip is from an episode where they take an elective pottery course and the teacher has a strict "no Ghost-ing" rule; if you reference the film Ghost (1990) you get kicked out.

Usually people who drive manuals are car enthusiasts. They like to be in control of their vehicle and understand more about it. I don't think that's particularly masculine or feminine. Obviously automatic is the default, anyone who just has a car to get around sticks with the auto. They're more readily available and easier to learn how to drive. If a man has specifically learned how to drive a manual because they expect to impress women with that skill then I'd see that as being unmanly. No one cares. If you want to learn for yourself because you like the feeling of being in control then that's cool, but don't do it because you think that will make you more popular.
