For simplicity's sake, I'm counting those 10 years starting with any anime released from the beginning of 2013 even though we're around mid-2023 now so it's more like 10 1/2 years. I don't personally count series unless they started in that year, so, for example, I wouldn't include a series which actually originally started with its first season in 2008, but had a second season in, say, 2015, but that's a personal preference. But 2022 I thought was the worst year for anime since...I don't know when. Before the 2010s at least. Meaning before the 2000s too since I prefer that decade to the 2010s. So at least the past 25+ years, but I would probably like more 90s series too if I had seen more of them. And so far in 2023 I'm down to watching fewer series than in any year since I started the seasonals in 2020. We're almost midway through the year and I've only seen six new series. Three from the winter season and three from the current spring season. But it's not due to burnout in the sense of diminishing interest in anime as a whole, since I'm regularly watching and enjoying older already aired series. |

Also, the 2020 selections stood out especially to me. I'm a little surprised to see someone list, let alone highlight, Hanyou no Yashahime: Sengoku Otogizoushi. Were you a fan of the original Inuyasha from 2000? Appare-Ranman! is also something which you rarely hear about, not only a few years later now in 2023, but even pretty much at the time right after it came out or as it was coming out; even for the average PA Works original series it seemed extra under the radar, which I suspect has to at least in some part be due to its production being delayed and release schedule put on hiatus as was the case with some other series in 2020 due to the global coronavirus pandemic. And BNA: Brand New Animal, I just finished watching like a week ago. From the little I read of reviews and reaction on MAL and other sites like Kitsu, I also heavily disagree with the largely mixed leaning toward negative reception it seems to have gotten and can't really understand the reason for it. I also found it interesting to see another series which on the surface level just based on premise alone, seemed to share some superficial basic similarities with Beastars, actually have quite a radically different focus and feel. |
