As MAL splits many shows up into seasons based on when they aired, we can give seasons different ratings (as I'm sure you're all aware) now my question is do you give each season a different rating. Because sometimes I see a small amount of a show, let's say one of the monogatari movies get rated a 10/10, is this because people think the ENTIRE monogatari series is a 10/10 or just this movie? for me I rate differently, and the case can be made that many 7/10's are better than a 9/10. Eg. two 12 eps seasons will be better than a 22 eps, even tho both 12 eps might be rated 7/10 and the 22 ep is rated 9/10. This is very intreguing what y'all think?

I rate each season differently or to be more precise I rate them based on how good I think they are as some are better and some are worse.

I always rate based on each season individually. I'm actually really glad MAL splits things up by seasons, because I don't think I'd be able to give a proper 'overall' score for a series. I can see why some people do that, but it just doesn't work for me. A a lot of the time, I find a show's first season to be just okay, but then the second season puts a lot of the first season into context, and so the second season is so much better for it. But other times, a second season doesn't build at all off of what the first season established, and can be kind of a disappointment that way. Sometimes a tie-in movie is a heartless rushed mess trying to call itself a finale to a series, and sometimes it's a perfect conclusion to- and an amazing culmination of- everything the series has done so far. So I like to be able to reflect my thoughts on stuff like that in my scores, too, rather than just giving one holistic score.

The way I see it, MAL splits shows up into seasons for a reason, and I like to take advantage of that as much as I can.

I rate every entry for its own merits but still take into account what came before it, so if one season builds upon the last and ends up becoming a better anime than the first season I'll give it a higher score, while a season that added nothing to the series, while still having all the individual aspects that made the first season good, I may rate lower because I didn't gain anything from watching the second season that I didn't already experience in the first season.

Even when a show gets split up even further I'll still rate each unit individually, like I rated the Towa no Quon and Tamayura movies separately even though those movie series are made to be treated as one continuous story.

I like giving different scores to different seasons of the same franchise as much as I can. Yu-Gi-Oh! holds the record of covering the largest range of scores on my list, with every score between 2 and 9.

It looks like quite a few people don't do that and give the same score to every entry instead, since I'm noticing that a highly acclaimed sequel makes the score of the previous season increase and conversely a bad sequel makes it decrease.

I don't rate season by season. I find it to be pretty redundant personally. I just update my overall score on season one usually while adding future seasons without scoring them. I don't want or need like 6 scores to reflect on how I feel about Attack on Titan for example. Only when a show is split into completely separate parts do I give them each their own score.

I try to rate everything as a whole, so, most time, I'll give the same score to all seasons, unless a cataclysm happens.

As an example: I gave 9 to all Monogatari seasons, I don't think they're all a 9, but I consider Monogatari Series to be a 9.
If you're a fanboy, please don't waste my time.

Watch more movies, please.

Perhaps, this is hell.

I do give each season of an anime a separate rating because perhaps the anime just declined in quality after a certain season or has improved significantly since then.

I rate them all individually.

Example: My favorite series is Natsume Yuujinchou which has 6 seasons, multiple OVA's and Specials, and even a movie. Here's how they're all rated:

Season 1= 8/10
Season 2= 9/10
Season 3= 10/10
Season 4= 10/10
Season 5= 9/10
Season 5 Specials= 8/10
Season 6= 9/10
Season 6 Specials= 9/10

Movie= 9/10
Special (marked as movie)= 8/10 (the one with Misuzu)
Itsuka Yuki no Hi ni OVA= 9/10
Nyanko-sensei to Hajimete no Otsukai Special= 8/10

Sometimes there's quite a sizeable discrepancy in the quality of an overall anime season wise, so yes, I do rate based on the seasons quality. Other times, the difference is minimal and they all generally get the same score, Natsume Yuujinchou is a good example already used in this thread.

Well, my answer would be yes but no. My score isn't always the same but previous season have an impact on it, generally it doesn't change much but I have few exceptions where the score changes drastically. Some shows get the same score for every season.

good rating / reviewers give scores to them individually.

if I give multiple seasons the same score, that means that I considered their quality in depth and assigned a score to them individually, scores that just so happened to match.

Most Seasonal Anime are already Garbage

But my 3/10s are far superior to 2/10s as they have some enjoyment value

I generally prefer to rate the entire series as a whole. I like having them all show up side by side when I sort by score. But there are certain cases where it's just not possible like Re:Zero season 2. It was such a disappointment that it retroactively made the 1st season worse, forcing me to subtract one point.

Individually considering MAL has different entries for different seasons.
IMDB does not sadly so you're forced to rate all of it under 1 entry.

That said, I enjoy rating seasons individually though, imagine having to rate "Promised Neverland" under 1 entry with it's insane change in score.
From an 8.52 (Season 1) average to 5.32 (Season 2) average score.

I'm somewhat ambivalent on the matter. On the one hand, considering rating by individual season (of some series; notably many even longer older series which could arguably be broken up into many seasons aren't arranged this way, like my favorite Inuyasha for instance for the majority of the series; not to mention One Piece and those super-long ones) seemed initially very foreign and alien to me when first joining and starting to use MAL as it was incongruent with the way I had always listed and rated non-anime media across so many different websites over the years prior. On the other, I'm used to it on here now and don't think it's altogether bad if you want a finer, more granular level of detail when assessing different series.

Since these different seasons of the same series are indeed just different seasons and not actually separate series though, I still like to have the option to rate the series as a whole somewhere even if MAL doesn't currently provide that as an option/feature, so what I do is I still rate all series I have seen (or seen at least one full season of) and there is just one rating per series in that running list I maintain in my profile, regardless of how many individual seasons any given series has.

For example, I rated Spice & Wolf season one with a 7/10 on its archival page, Spice & Wolf season two with a 4/10 on its, and in the space on my own profile page where I rate all series as a whole, I've given a 6/10 to Spice & Wolf as a whole series.

This number for the series as a whole could be thought to be the balance or middle ground between the ratings of the series' various seasons, if it's the case that they're different, but rather than actually working it out mathematically in a strict numerical sense it's more like what I would just rate the series, with all its seasons taken into account, if the format involving rating a series' different seasons independently didn't exist. In that case all the series' high and low points, including all its seasons, would swirl around in my mind to be factored into the final rating. So I very much hold it to be important that there is still a place for such a rating to exist and to voice it.

the anime really has to fuck things up in order for me to downrate a season of it
an example would be vinland saga s2 which is an insult to the prologue, s1 had its issues but still, it was good but farm arc is a train wreck

I rate different seasons individually because I won't always enjoy different seasons the same amount. For example, if the climax of the series is in season 2 then I'll probably rate that season higher because I would have enjoyed it more than the previous season.

I rate the entire show the same: I.e. season 1 is a 9, season 2 is a 7, whole show gets a median of it - an 8.
The same rules apply for all OVAs that share the cast, setting and the plot with a parent show. So, for example, parent show gets a 9, there is this OVA that's essentially a side-story to the show, it's gonna get a 9 too.

Let me put it this way: what is the difference between these two
A Promised Neverland Season 1
A Promised Neverland Season 2

That should answer the question for anyone.
