Like a bolt from the blueits time for another threadview!!  So sci-fi has been a pretty popular genre all over the world and also its one that many including myself, has grown up with and I've seen a decent amount of them growing up starting with the mecha stuff like the Transformers Unicron Trilogy and a bit of Gundam as well too. Cowboy Bebop ofc you have to mention as well is the massive gateway for many including me. Cyberpunk would be easily my personal favorite section of sci-fi case in point, Psycho Pass a huge must watch for anti sjws like myself would love but before that it would be stuff like akira and also since the thread is based around lesser known stuff and ofc it has to have its edge in it lmao lets throw in something shojo related called Twlight Of The Dark Master which is a pretty decent watch imo and pretty spooky as well too. Now for the manga/anime I really wanna showcase and something I personally think given how much sciadv fans are around the anime community, I want to talk about Twin Spica. As space travel was touched briefly upon in Robotic Notes as well too. The story focuses on Kamogawa Asumi and her journey of achieving her goal after her mother who sadly died in a crash of becoming astronaut. It has a sense of realism to it and its focused on characters journey and the reason why they want to go to space as well as their relationships. And the characters as said have their own motivations onto why they chose the path they are in. Tonal wise it does have a downbeat sad atmosphere to it. Ofc there is its cute moments here and there and I liked Lion-san sure he could be bit of a doofus but he was a well-meaning cool mentor and I liked him. And the focus on hopes and dreams the central theme was really touching imo as Asumi will always be cheerful no matter how dark things can get. And the art as well is pretty cute imo yeah it may look dated and fuzzy but if you’re like me, theres a certain charm to it. Conspiracy theory yep it has one! Now it does have its irl references to it but not in the style sciadv would use with its full proud on weebness lmao.Its mainly from irl astronauts as well as other astronomy related stuff but lets use the harmonica that lion-san often played in the series, since that was the first instrument to be played in space along with that being one of the items carried during the Gemini 6a mission and jingle bells that xmas song was one of the songs played on it. Sadly, it has the curse of 2000s anime adaptations with it not fully adapting the entire story and making up its own ending and it’s the early parts of the manga briefly as 30 chapters of the manga was still made at that time it was still airing. Overall, its honestly a really touching story and it should get more love. | sci fi is such a broad spectrum. Most anime has some element of it so this is a difficult question. | I used to think I didn't like SF as a kid, but it turns out I simply don't like the popular titles. I believe one reason my favorites are unpopular is because translations are harder to come by. Take YU-NO, for example. The game didn't get an official translation until 2019, over 20 years after its original Japanese release! There were also no serious attempts to adapt the story until 2019, and the anime we finally got is not particularly good. The subgenre is another factor. I don't pay much attention to mecha, steampunk, or cyberpunk. |

| Some obscure space operas come to mind for this since Legend of the Galactic Heroes gets enough praise in that genre. Particular ones coming to mind are Infinite Ryvius and the Crest/ Banner of the Stars franchise. |

I just finished reading Astra: Lost in Space last night and am currently reading Battle Angel Alita—both are fantastic manga by the way, I really need to watch the anime adaptation for the former sometime. However, I regret to inform you that I haven't really seen much sci-fi anime... but that'll probably change real soon! As OP already knows, I've found a ton of DVDs for Gurren Lagann, Casshern Sins, Eureka Seven, and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya recently, and I cannot wait to start watching all of them once I get my huge backlog of library manga books out of the way! I'll be sure to come back to this thread real soon—not just to update with a concrete answer in the future, but also to further add to the discussion!! :P |

Shame they aren't around anymore and like alphadream i hope they come back one day. If we're talking mangaka wise, Ai Yazawa and Kaori Yuki creating one would be interesting to see. Kaori Yuki did Neji and its a short but decent revenge read imo. I still need to read Battle Angel Alita but rn, i am going to start Astra Lost In Space soon! as my backlog of stuff eases down. Guren Lagann,Casshern,Eureka and Haruhi are pretty solid picks!! and i'm sure @metropyramid is going to be happy to see you get into the series as well too!!
