| I think regardless of your 'primary' email provider it's good to have more than one. Even with unique passwords and MFA it can be useful to have another line of defence and split up your online presence into multiple silos for various reasons. Nowadays I have both a Microsoft (outlook) and Google (gmail, I mention this because there are those out there with googlemail accounts which is pretty cool I think.) account as well as a protonmail account. My old hotmail account got broken into a few years back. I think hotmail might just be a part of outlook now but chances are it's an old account at this point so get yourself on haveibeenpwned and double check you're not compromised. I don't think there's a 'best' email option tbh, depends what you're going for. Here are some scenarios for example: For privacy, you're better off using protonmail over gmail. If you desire or require free cloud storage and application usage, you're better off choosing a gmail or outlook account over protonmail. If you're trying to look professional for a job then it's probably a good idea to have a single email address specifically for that purpose, and personally I like to go with a well known domain for that purpose. If you know what you're doing (mainly so you can fix it if something goes wrong) then you could host your own email server. |

| Gmail. It's quick and easy to use and you can also connect your gmail account to other services which makes everything easier. But I haven't tried hotmail or yahoo so my answer is biased |

| I only got G-mail because at some point long time ago Youtube forced us to link our emails with them (thus creating a new G-mail account) but I never bothered to use it anyways. I grew up using Hotmail but also got a Yahoo email too since I used to use Yahoo Answers back in the days |

| Gmail works fine. I tried protonmail due to its advertised privacy features, but I can't use it with Thunderbird without paying money. Here's the thing, it's not that I don't care about privacy, but email as a protocol has always been very weak in that front. Protonmail's privacy is better than gmail, but it's still email. If you send an email to someone not using protonmail, it won't be end to end encrypted. If you want maximum privacy, you should switch to like a private messenger, e.g. Signal, Session, Matrix, etc. I know OP didn't ask about privacy, but this was my thought process when I decided to just stick with gmail. Gmail's privacy is non-existent, but at least their security is good and their services experience virtually no downtime. |
