So I might have accidentaly made two of my friends anime fans, and now I don't really know what next. Should I just aimlessly suggest my own favourites or guide them to Evangelion ect.? What about manga and long running shows and all weird stuff? Is this even safe?
I don't even know myself, if I'm joking right now or not. I just got some reason to start my first thread.

The great responsibility of creating new fans A) doesn't exist and B) is fucking creepy. You should only encourage it if they express some kind of interest in the first place. Jesus fucking christ, it's not a religion.

-------

Anyway, since they have expressed interest, just don't fucking bother guiding them towards anything. They are not babies in your care. They have the capabilities to make their own fucking choices. Don't worry about them.

If you actually want to help, point them to MAL or AniList or wherever. Show them the Database and maybe help them learn navigate it to find shit they're interested in.

Let them make their own choices. Unless they specifically ask you for recs, they can handle this shit themselves. If they do ask you for recs, make sure you know what they're interested in and tailor a rec around them as individuals rather than throwing some fucking "gateway" bullshit at the wall. If you don't know what they're interested in, ask "Well golly, what are you interested in?" and work your way from there.

It's so much easier than you're making it out to be.

SAO, maybe but FMA 2003 definitely not.

If anything, the best gateway anime is "Death Note" - Simple to follow, not too many tropes thrown in your face and just an addicting story to follow.

ask them what genres/categories they might be interested in, & suggest some from there. if they don't know at all, summarize a few shows you like & what genres they fall into- see if they like any of those. Doing those two helped a lot getting some of my friends into anime.

They asked what to watch and I jokingly said "anime". Then they watched some anime and now they want more and think that I probably know what is good and what isn't. And that part is the responsibility. Not the converting itself.

When I started out watching anime my friends thought it was just childish shit and porn. They still think so, or most of them.

But I did get a few to start watching a few shows.

I had a friend that loved MMA and so on, so I got him watching Ippo.
I got another friend that are into games like Tibia and WoW so it was easy to get him watching a few fantasy shows.

A good way to get friends to watch anime is to go after their hobbies if they have any :)

If you know they are in the mood to watch anime AND they don't know what to watch and ask you for recs, then...

If you know their tastes, then suggest them something that fits what they want to see.

If you don't know their tastes, but are okay with you talking about yours, then "aimlessly suggesting your own favorites" is better than trying to tell them there's some sort of Official List Of Anime Everyone Should Watch. Because, first, there is no such official list, and second, it's much nicer to hear someone talking about something they genuinely like, than to have them try to tell me how to be a proper fan of something. The latter is annoying.

Ask them, casually, what they liked about what they saw, or what they are interested in seeing more of. Recommend them something based on that.

If for some reason they can't say what they enjoyed about what they watched, then just recommend them your faves. Less boring than following some fan-declared canon anyway.

I originally quoted operationvalkyri and you (specifically "The great responsibility of creating new fans A) doesn't exist and B) is fucking creepy. You should only encourage it if they express some kind of interest in the first place.").

Then I read further into the thread and realized that OP had further clarified their situation, so I erased both quotes and replaced that with a reply to their later message.

I also agree with telling them to ignore YouTubers...but only if they bring it up in front of OP. Otherwise OP should just not even mention YouTubers at all.

I thought you were asking for your friends, but then you mentioned Evangelion, so are they your enemies or? I'm asking because understanding Evangelion demands the highest level of otaku enlightment, only the chosen few will ever be able to appreciate the perfection and deep symbolism of the great message of this piece of post-modern post-truth positive proto-depression. This means, recommending it to someone that's not ready for it will throw them in a state of life contemplation that may lead them to becoming socially apathetic, or, in good and simple english, an useless couch potato that daily indulges in LSD. This is your great responsability: don't continue spreading the Evangelion virus, stay at home and let that rec die by flattening the curve.

Anyways, just show them the top 50 of MAL, they're totally representative of the good anime out there, no doubt about it.

ehh not really; Evangelion was one of the first few anime series I watched, and was responsible for convincing me that the anime medium was capable of serious dramatic storytelling.

Did you manage to wrap your head around such complex storytelling? I guess my church's priest was right when he said there are the ones that are chosen by God to be destined to great things. I was under the impression it was just a means to justify why the rich get richer and the poor have to accept their suffering for a promise of eternal life if they're good bois. Trust me, my knowledge of the judeo-christian mythos is as deep as Hideaki Anno's, so I can't possibly be wrong.

...I'm not sure it was all that complex?

I mean, the main theme of the story is basically that Shinji is being forced/manipulated/socially-compelled by the people and circumstances around him to do things and take risks that he really has no good reason to do otherwise and this can be seen as a metaphor for basically forcing him to mature, in ways that arguably aren't healthy for him. The story is the emotional journey of the increasingly desperate situations he's forced into, and how he reacts to these circumstances. The Angels and the other Abrahamic/eschatological symbolism essentially implies that these situations are the weight of destiny (the will of God, and not necessarily a friendly one) bearing on him.

The rest of the cast is populated by the characters surrounding him, and among them the most sympathetic is Asuka, who may seem unfriendly at first but is deeply a victim of destiny herself.

What I did with some of my friends (Keep in mind I am not suggesting this):
I told them to start with the big boys. The 200+ ep shows. Now a big chunk of them have been hooked on anime for a really long time without getting bored easily when watching 12/24+ ep shows.

About other shows? I would just tell them to follow their instincts. If they did the long ones they can really survive mostly anything else.

Three easy steps:
1.) Ask what genres they like.
2.) Ask what settings they want.
3.) Give them your best (in your opinion) anime that fits those things.

The worst thing they can say is "I don't know". In that case you are free to suggest what you want.

Hmm... I’m the first in my whole family including relatives to watch anime, and I introduced anime to many of my cousins, and it ends there, because after all, they have their own taste of anime. With or without my recommendations, they will end up watching anime I like and dislike.

I've found that people who just randomly come up to me and say stuff like, "I heard you like anime, recommend me something," are just doing it to make conversation instead of actually being interested in exploring anime. I've had lots of people do that and it gets pretty annoying. These people never go into details about what they like or dislike, just wait for me to respond to their silly request without having anything to go on. Those who are genuinely interested in exploring anime will have done some homework themselves using the magic tool that is Google, or are themselves more forthcoming about what they want. They'll say, "I like mystery, I've seen such and such. Any anime similar to that?" These days I simply ask the former kind of people to google anime and watch what seems interesting to them. I mean, they dont need to feign interest in my hobby to talk to me, it's patronizing. It is not my responsibility to "convert" them to anime.

Why does it matter who i am or whether you know me or not? This is a public forum, is it not? That means i can address whoever i want about whatever they say.

I would think that you'd be familiar with this simple concept since, judging by your post count, you're clearly much more active in these forums than i am.

Or, do you expect me to believe that you always ask this* same insipid question everytime somebody responds to you in a discussion?

The problem I have is when I try to suggest an anime series to my friends, that I have been friends with for years, and I find out they are not real nerds/fans.

"I don't think I would like that..."

Really, because all you post about is X and so, this X that I suggested is in the same vein as all the shit you been posting about non stop for 3 years...

"I don't have any Anime trackers..." Ok cool... Do you want to join one? So you can have a list?

"I remember them all", Dafuq? I can't remember every title of every show I have watched since 2000. "Well, it is only a hobby, so I haven't really watched that much..." - me scrolls through their FB for a while... scrolls through their IG for awhile...

Conclusion... Fake as Fuck.

Is... is this a cult now? X'D

But in all seriousness, you can't really recommend them stuff to watch if you don't know their preferences. Ask them what genres they tend to gravitate towards, and from there you can suggest a couple. Maybe start with more mainstream ones that a lot of people who get into anime for the first time tend to like. Stuff like Death Note (which I can vouch is very good) or Boku no Hero Academia, which a lot of people like, or my personal rec - Kimetsu no Yaiba. But really, being an anime fan is very, very broad, because there are just so many different genres that vary wildly from each other. Slice-of-life, for example, is VERY different from psychological. So maybe look through the genres here, find one or two that you'd think is a good gateway to that specific genre, and then if they tell you what they prefer you have something ready.

I am forever your most devoted believer.

It's always been one. Look at how many threads we get about gateway anime and trying to whittle down the best possible recs to create new converts as we can, and how many supportive responses those tend to receive.

"Why do people hate weebs? It has to be because of the tits and fanservice and shit. The stuff that's everywhere in media. It's not all because we act overbearing and weird about our hobby."

You don't have to care (assholes are rarely self-aware enough to do so) or listen to me, of course; i'm not your dad.
But that won't stop me from calling you out on your toxic behavior because, while OP's idea of "recommendation responsibility" is admittedly silly, i truly fail to see how it would be offensive enough to warrant such an aggressive, profanity-fueled response from you.

But anyway, if acting like a prick is what helps you get your rocks off then, by all means, you don't have to stop on my account (you obviously won't). Do carry on with your pitiable self.

The responsibility to convert new anime fans is indeed great. It's so great that you should be asking your nearest Japanese consulate about it, not random kids on an internet forum. In recommending anime with the intention to convert fans, you are essentially behaving as an ambassador to Japan, nay, all Japanese people. This sacred duty is not one to be taken lightly. Succeed and you've done the world a service. Fail and you've done incalculable damage.

Without going into specifics, I can say this. Your recommendations, weighty a choice as they are, must fall lightly like sakura blossoms.

Anime recommendation do yes, or anime recommendation do no. Anime recommendation do "Should I just aimlessly suggest my own favourites?" get squish like grape.

Just an inspirational image to remind you of the gravity of your commitment to converting anime fans.

You don't have to care

You're absolutely right. So I don't think I will.

Nice discussion. I'm glad we came to an understanding.

Your dry sense of humor is incredibly amazing. Please keep posting silliness. Thanks!

Eyyy, look at that. Someone even likes my posts, so now I have more of an incentive to keep doing what I've been doing.

Isn't that just great?

You don't have to care (assholes are rarely self-aware enough to do so) or listen to me, of course; i'm not your dad.
But that won't stop me from calling you out on your toxic behavior because, while OP's idea of "recommendation responsibility" is admittedly silly, i truly fail to see how it would be offensive enough to warrant such an aggressive, profanity-fueled response from you.

But anyway, if acting like a prick is what helps you get your rocks off then, by all means, you don't have to stop on my account (you obviously won't). Do carry on with your pitiable self.
+1, I agree. Alright, now you have a morale boost as well. Especially since OP was specifically talking about his 2 friends who started to get into anime already.
