The Usagi Special Birthday Party 2019 event announced on Sunday that the two-part theatrical sequel anime in the Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon Crystal anime series, subtitled Eternal, will open in Japanese theaters in 2020. The official website also revealed a teaser visual (pictured) and a special promo.

Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon Eternal serves as the fourth installment in Toei Animation's reboot of Naoko Takeuchi's original magical girl manga. The sequel was announced in January 2017 as a part of the franchise's 25th anniversary and later confirmed to be a two-part anime film covering the Dream arc in June of that year.

Chiaki Kon is returning from the third season to direct the films, featuring character designs by Kazuko Tadano, the 1992 Sailor Moon television anime's character designer. Takeuchi is also supervising the film project. The lead cast members are set to reprise their roles.

Commemorating the original series' 20th anniversary, the reboot was announced in 2012, with the aim to adapt the manga more faithfully. The first two anime seasons, covering the Dark Kingdom and Black Moon arcs, streamed semimonthly on Niconico beginning July 2014, and later premiered on television in Spring 2015. The third season, based on the Infinity arc, aired in Spring 2016.

VIZ Media licensed all three anime seasons in North America and streamed them through Hulu. The company released the first season on Blu-ray and DVD in August 2016, and the second and third in February and December 2017, respectively. Crunchyroll also simulcast the anime seasons as they ran in Japan.

No !! Just, no ! Why? They had already compromised by softening the charadesign and giving up on Takeuchy's style, why do they lower the bar even more now, for MOVIES (that took almost 4years to make)?!

The girls were round enough, no need to make them as round as their 90sTV counterparts...

@Psajdak @VVill It's not that I prefer Takeuchi's drawings (although I do), it's simply that this project began with two promises: faithfulness in story & graphic style. I could understand they had to lower their ambition a bit with the means they were given (that is not the way you handle a celebration project with more intricate drawings to animate btw, TOEI) but there is a difference between making compromises and full back-pedal. The fact they cancel the thing just when it's going to the big screen makes it even more baffling.
In the end, it's false advertisement (I won't call that betrayal, this word is way too strong for some video product).

it's funny how now, after 20 years, I look back at these characters and realize that they're all so loli and moe like, while back then I'd perceive them to be so old and womanly.

Love how the contrast changes with age.

Because for most people, 90s anime style will always be THE Sailor Moon, definitive version, despite being heavily changed from manga.

Personally, I think Crystal designs looked very nice; or rather, I think for most part, every Sailor Moon title looked at worst rather good.

That all being said, I am just happy for more Sailor Moon anime in general.

It would be great if Toei eventually gave it Dragon Ball treatment, and revived it for new seasons, and stories.

Maybe even make it like Precure, that it lasts for a long time.

No offense to the manga artstyle, but I vastly prefer the original 90s character designs. One of the reasons why I stayed away from the remakes.

The new designs did not like a lot of people nor the transformations in CGI animation, so they had to change it, at least they did listen to their public.

Same here. Been a Sailor Moon fan (anime, never read manga) my whole life, but I just couldn't watch the modern remake, the character designs feel lifeless to me.

Maybe it's because I don't actually hate Sailor Moon Crystal that much despite its faults, but I see no problem with the updated designs.

Yes, I admit that Sailor Moon Crystal started out iffy, and yes, I admit that it can get annoying to go through yet another character designer, AND yes, it would be nice if Takeuchi's beautiful art style was maintained.
But I honestly have no real problem with these new designs... in fact, they look even better than even Season III's art style (no offense) in my opinion. One thing about the Sailor Moon anime that I kinda liked is that the main characters always looked like the age they were supposed to be— young 14-16 year olds. As beautiful as Takeuchi's art style is, she often drew characters like Sailor Moon in a way that they often appear a few years older than their actual ages and it was very hard for me to remember that they weren't even 18 yet because of the way their faces were drawn and how long their legs often are in the manga.
Yes, it's still a bit meaningful in the manga since Usagi is often drawn in this way to show how she has grown into a more stronger and wiser woman after various story arcs, but the terrifying things the Senshi go through hit much harder when I remember that they were 14-16 years old throughout all of this. Harsh things end up hitting a lot more impact when it's put on younger characters rather than older ones.

Anyway, back onto Eternal, I like how cute the Senshi look now, and on a marketing stance, it's not a bad idea to bring Kazuko Tadano back on here. Since she did work on the character designs for the first two seasons (and apparently worked on one of the fan-favorite transformations, "Moon Crystal Power") and nostalgia IS what's selling this decade, it probably will sell more whether you recognized her character designs or not— the 90s Sailor Moon was and still IS popular so a lot of people might recognize the art style.
Also, she apparently worked on animation direction on one of my childhood favorite episodes (episode 34), and I still love how that episode looks to this day. I also personally like the art style of the first two seasons as much as the art style used for the other three seasons.

So yeah, I don't mind the change too much and I will look forward to this new movie. It's such a shame that the original Dream arc was pretty much ditched in the original 90s anime, so I'm glad to see this arc be properly adapted!!

(My first forum post! I'm somewhat new here)

featuring character designs by Kazuko Tadano, the 1992 Sailor Moon television anime's character designer.

but ye too late for the original character designer to comeback imo since there are already 2 seasons of the remake that got awful animation

So...why is this a movie?
Actually....the "subtitle" Eternal is misleading and bugs me more then the fact it's a movie[instead of a season/series]....thought for a sec this was the equivalent to the original last season (Sailor Stars + Eternal Sailor Moon)

Guess I forgot how many arcs this series had....

Movies are the new trendy thing producers go for in the industry right now. It's a safer way to make your money back because a set amount of people will pay to see it, on top of that you will have disc sales at a later date.

Dang, that's far away. Hopefully there isn't a big gap between the two films. Stars will take forever at this rate.
