I have created a side by side comparison of screenshots from the 2001 original anime Fruits Basket against the new adaptation of Fruits Basket, I have also painstakingly typed out both the English dub script for comparison. Link here~

Please note, as this took a lot of time, I will not be doing this for each episode! But this is for everyone who was looking to compare between the remake and the original.

Shout-out to my housemate Brendan for assisting with Photoshop!

Honestly I think if you prefer the modern drawings that is absolutely fine! The only thing you would miss is the feel of the original series but regardless story and script is almost the same. It would be hard to watch the 2001 if you cannot get past the art so I UNDERSTAND. Haha!

Hope you enjoy it!

Years and years ago I wanted to start this series, but I still wasn't able to follow english sub and there wasn't a way to watch all the episodes... now that it has passed so much time, it would be impossible for me to return to the 2001 version as it's way too "outdated" regarding the drawings as I got too used up with moe moe animes.

Thanks for this side by side comparison! Hope the series remains loyal to the original one :3

[the difference in the black-colored Yuki is too much aka the visual representation of him rejecting a hug, made Yuki looks extremely more femenine with his movements]

This made me really happy to read~! I hope it stays loyal to both the 2001 adaptation and the manga. I know that the general feel won't be exactly the same but regardless it's a wonderful story and I'm really glad my post can inspire someone like you to give the series another go :)!

[Also that scene killed me because I think they killed it (in a good way haha)]

Wow, that's impressive. I don't even want to know how many hours it took.
Anyway, 2001 anime looks really outdated, so I'm glad I can watch this one.

PS: major kudos to you, my fellow 93!

I felt like I had to force myself to watch through first ep of 2019. Didn't find it as funny opposed to 2001 version and still trying to get used to the seiyuu of each chara. I'm just hoping 2019 will stick to the manga as that will be the only thing that will get me to like it on an emotional level considering the manga was good

Older version looks much more cartoony in many scenes. To be expected really, since 2001 series director specialised mostly in gag anime adaptations. Though script staff were also solid from what I see.
Inconsistencies are to be expected by adating a 20+ year old manga to HD age.

I watched the new one 3-4 times to get used to it lol.. I might say that it worked! I appreciate this remake now and yeah I hope that they remain faithful to the original source *w/c I think yes since this is the purpose of the remake afterall*

Imo, the 2001 series needed to chill out on the comedy. I've been watching it while reading the manga and I feel like the 2001 series leans way too much on the comedy. To the point where it takes scenes that I thought were funny in the manga and just goes a bit too over the top with them. In particular I think they go a little to crazy with the Yuki fan club and hot spring hostess in the first series. Not that the latter has anything to do with this ep though. I personally found the kind of angry faces the girls made at Tohru to be more funny than the spelling out thing.

To be frank... i like both version (of course only after 1 ep) and I relay don't see any "outdated" style of first one. For me most important thing are my man Shigure have humor and protectiveness of old series.

Man, the one on the left is so much better. The girls look more imposing with a full-body shot as opposed to just peeking from the side. Not to mention far more expression in their models.

Were the animators just not willing to draw that particular pose for each girl? I hope they amend this in the BDs, but I"m doubtful.

Hey man thanks for taking your time into this, I appreciate.

Haven't seen 2001 version but I think it has a unique style that 2019 doesn't. However, I liked the first episode and I thought it was really nice and entertaining.

They do angry faces in the 2019 version though, it's just different and the OP didn't have that particular shot in their side by sides. Too bad, because I liked that part.

It's definitely cringey watching the 2001 version for the first time in 2019.. I introduced my best friend to the series and she remarked on how hard it was to watch but she also managed to really enjoy the charm of it! I hope you enjoy the new series!

So I went back just for you to get you a screenshot of their most expressive/angriest faces in the 2019 version:

I remember why I did not use it and that was because in the original 2001 version the first front on shot you see of all three girls' faces is this image:

That's their reaction to seeing Uo i.e. after they yelled at Tohru about Yuki.

The comparison images I used exactly replicated their positioning and the scene hence why I used two side on images! I also double checked if there was a side on angrier reaction in the 2019 version but the angriest was the screenshot used in the comparison!

great work with the comparisons!

i've watched the 2001 version in like... 2005/2006, and i definitely don't remember the art being so awkward haha

really enjoying the 2019 version so far, the art is really cute and imo better for this kind of series than 2001 ver one.

i've never rewatched furuba, so it almost feels as if i'm watching something i haven't seen before!

Nice work! I know it's only been two episodes, but I think I might even come to like the new version even more than the old one, though it feels almost like a betrayal to say that about my favorite anime ever!

I really, really like what they're doing with the new version. True, the comedy is noticeably toned down, but I'm okay with a new, less slapstick version. And we get increased detail in animation, the promise of seeing characters animated that never were before, and the sheer joy of seeing Fruits Basket again! I watched the old series as it came out week by week and doing it again is so much fun!

Can't wait to see how the updated scenes of some of my favorite moments in future episodes look. If it's as much an upgrade as these scenes are, it's all going to be amazing. :D

Animation is better, but I still haven't gotten use to the character designs. Comedy was better in the 2001 version as well, the remake feels like your everyday shoujo/romance series with above average animation. It's still early on though so I may warm up to it more with time.

Hm.. honestly if you have time I'd say watch them both side by side haha. I'm actually in the process of rewatching the original. They both have the same feel and with the original you can binge watch it instead of waiting for the new episodes. The art style is... well 2001 but the humor is still there and its still very lighthearted.

I didn't even know the character design in the old one looks so horrible, the cover art already looked bad but man, it looks even worse on screenshots. Especially those huge eyes, it's just grotesque. No offense to the fans of the original, but I can barely look at this. I'd never be able to watch the old version, but I'm enjoying the remake so far despite the fact I usually hate shoujo, so now I'm even more glad that they decided to make this.

Good job with the comparisions, OP.

Theyre just trying to stay true to the original source, one of the posters here mentioned 2001 tried to make scenes funny a bit too much for comedy sake

Not a big fan of FB, but I've seen the old adaptation and read the manga. Also started the new one, but I feel like it really gets overblown praises. It's essentially just a modern remake, ofc, it's gonna have better animation, art and sound. Also worth noting is the new one will most probably get a more faithful following on the reference, so that's good news. I still prefer the old cast though by a far mile. Not saying the new ones aren't good, but the former cast was just legendary.

This version is better than the old one since it's adapting the manga more faithfully and accurately than the original one which had a lot of adds and fillers. The 2001 version was full of fillers content and made the story way more childish and peaceful than it actually is. While this version is not exaggerating the funny-happy side of the story, so it's better. As a fan of the MANGA, I prefer this version because I feel like I'm really watching an adaptation of it, while the first version made me more upset and frustrated than anymore, with all these stupid adds.

I’m sure this took a while but thanks for the rundown between the changes! I can say, for certain now, that this new reboot is comparatively better in terms of Animation and Dialogue so here’s to hoping it’ll retain this momentum throughout the seasons!

So this is referring to the dub versions of both of the series since I’m a mother and don’t have time to read while I watch, though I enjoy subs:
I love that they stuck true to the original voice cast that made it hit home for me, but as far as laughing out loud and actually crying the new version doesn’t hold the same emotional token to me. As far as animation goes I believe everyone can agree that the new version is much better- but on the other hand it better be!!! That was 2001 and this is 2019. I’m in the middle of the new version’s first season and I love the detail but as far as how they switched up the dialogue, personally I felt the original was more heart-felt at times, if I could switch the new animation for the dialogue of the original it would make for the perfect anime. And forgive me but I didn’t read the manga and the German Momiji kind of threw me off.

Animation wise the new one is of course better since it has been 20 years but there is just that feeling that original gives me and the new one can't for example her introducing her self at the beginning was pretty informative. Also new version has a lot more serious tone compared to the original but I actually loved the funny tone for me the original will be always special for me but I am gonna be open about the new and watch to see the anime I like in hd and beautiful graphics.

I agree that the comedy was much better in the original. In fact, while watching the remake, I almost forgot that it used to be a fairly big factor in the writing. I think the art is much better in the remake. The background and character drawings are all around more beautiful, and were one of the very first things I noticed while re-watching. I do agree that some of the expressions in the first adaptation were better at portraying their intended emotions, however I feel like the remake was intended to appear more realistic... rather than the exaggerated style of the original. Another thing I noticed is the remake is better at portraying a sentimental, heartwarming and emotional feeling, which was much different than the comedic feel that the original went for... even if it still did include those feelings back then.
