A series of bombings has hit luxury hotels and churches in Sri Lanka, killing at least 138 people and wounding about 400 as worshippers were attending Easter Sunday services.

Three of the explosions took place in Catholic churches while three other explosions were reported in luxury hotels - the Cinnamon Grand, Kingsbury and Shangri-La - located in the heart of Colombo.

The first explosion was reported in a church located in the capital. The other blasts followed within half an hour.

There were no immediate claims of responsibility.

One of the churches targetted was St Anthony's in Colombo. The other two were St Sebastian's in Negombo, about 30km from the capital and another in Batticaloa, 250km east of the capital.
St Sebastian's posted pictures of destruction inside the church on its Facebook page, showing blood on pews and the floor, and requested help from the public.

An official at the Batticaloa hospital told AFP news agency more than 300 people had been admitted with injuries following the blast there.

Police spokesperson Ruwan Gunasekera said that the injured were being evacuated while security forces have cordoned off the areas and search operations are under way.

Photos circulating on social media showed the roof of one church had been blown almost entirely off in the blast.

The floor was littered with a mixture of roof tiles, splintered wood and blood.

Several people could be seen covered in blood, with some trying to help those with more serious injuries.

The images could not immediately be verified.

Government response

"Emergency meeting called in a few minutes. Rescue operations underway," Sri Lanka's Minister of Economic Reforms and Public Distribution, Harsha de Silva, said in a tweet on his verified account.

He said he had been to two of the attacked hotels and was at the scene at St Anthony's Shrine and described "horrible scenes".

"I saw many body parts strewn all over," he tweeted, adding that there were "many casualties including foreigners".

"Please stay calm and indoors," he added.

Only around six percent of mainly Buddhist Sri Lanka is Catholic, but the religion is seen as a unifying force because it includes people from both the Tamil and majority Sinhalese ethnic groups.

Al Jazeera's Minelle Fernandez, reporting from Colombo, said the crisis was still unfolding.

"We're hearing that Colombo national hospital is still receiving casualties brought in from the multiple locations.

"In terms of law enforcement, we've been hearing that all festivities have been canceled, that security in and around the city has been tightened," Fernandez reported.

"It's still very open-ended … it's too early [to speculate who is behind the attack] but security in the capital and the airport has been stepped up following the attacks," she added.

Coordinated attacks

Rajiva Wijesinha, a former member of the Sri Lankan parliament, told Al Jazeera the coordinated nature of the attacks has shocked the country.

"It's actually extremely chilling. We've never had anything of this sort before. Sri Lanka had a terrible time under Tamil Tiger terrorism for about 25 years and then there was a great sense of relief, which I'm afraid the West has been fighting with us about, when we got rid of the tiger terrorists," Rajiva said.

"But the tiger terrorists were never as well organised never and never quite as brilliant in synchronisation and this is obviously something on a much larger scale which is frankly quite terrifying and you know the reactions I've heard suggest people are moving into panic mode again," he said.

"And that is understandable because of the range of these attacks and the concentration on the Christian churches and then the hotels as well suggest we are dealing with something really quite horrible," Rajiva added.

Speaking to Al Jazeera from Colombo, Ashwin Hemmathagama, a reporter with the DailyFT, said the attacks were a blow to the country's tourism sector.

"At the moment, police have cordoned off the areas and cautioned the public to remain vigilant. They have asked the public to stay indoors and hasty decisions because investigations are under way."

"After the civil war ended, almost a decade ago, the tourism industry was picking up. Basically, everything was back to its current perspective, but unfortunately this kind of attack will definitely cripple the tourism sector."

Three Sri Lankan churches and three hotels hit by near simultaneous explosions, killing at least 138 people, police say.
400 wounded.

Edit 01: 210 dead

Yet no mention of who did it, I wonder why everyone is so scared of mentioning it?

They will even go as far as blocking the face of the perpetrator in photos if they aren't white.

Ok, sorry, but this guy from parliament is just fucking dumb. The Tamil tigers actually had a god damn motive, carried a war for fucking 30 years for independence after oppression and against multiple governments. And you are saying they are less intelligent and less organized than some fucking dumbasses blowing churches up? Comparing people who have fought armies to cowards who just bomb harmless worshippers? LOOOOL. It's like saying George Washington is less intelligent than the New Zealand shooter.

Love the country but people in their parliament are fucking stupid.

That cannot be real.

Americans are very geographically dumb, just look at the amount that have never had a passport. I bet 75% couldn't even point out Germany or France on a map. Probably near 99% for Sri Lanka.

That's pretty bad of a series of bombings.

I wonder if it could be an attempt to divide the ethnic groups more? Or it's Buddhist nationalists?

Holy shit 8 blasts and a few diffused. I can't recall the last time such a huge amount of bombs were used in a terrorist attack. Over 210 dead and 400+ injured.
RIP to the dead and hopefully the injured survive. Why can't people just accept each other? Just live and let others live dammit.

this is seriously very mistery who are the preparator. the fact that christian is the one targeted also complicated the motive. they have no involvement to any recent violence in area or region or even international scale. they are also pretty low in numbers, below buddhist majority, then hindu, and mulism. they have long history of victim, but it has been calm for comunity since last decade. in the most recent riot, it was between Buddhist and muslim, chirstian is not involved at all.

Islamist has very few presence in Sri Lanka. if it does islamist, this will be it first attack if it does done by islamist, but it very unlikely for a small group to do this scale of bombing. Islam has been prosecuted by british government so they usually live in highland or urban areas. they have 0 reason to attack current government of sri lanka or Christian Minority since the one on the mountain is isolated community with strong local tradition while the urban one is very close to government and also minority as well.

Sri lanka Tamil movement also has long history of attacking muslim and christian communities, but they hasn't done anything for decade. also their brutal attacks also made they lost support even among tamils. so this kind of attack will be only remnants of the past. if there is new tamil movement, it will be stupid to doing something like this.

the extreme socialist movement is pretty much ded. very ded. everyone ded.

the most recent heated up tension is extreme buddhist. but they are majority and have no history of suicide bombing. this could be huge blow to movement if this one that happen.

the only official confirmation soo far that it is religious extremist, but no further information. 3 has been arrested for bombing, but still no release on identity.

Apparently, Tamil Tigers were allegedly behind the attack but no confirmation as of yet. Still, first New Zealand now Sri Lanka it's like people are purposely trying to pin big terrorist attacks onto every country in the world

So many people dead and many more injured,my condolence to them from india. Our nations had ties with each other since millenia and srilanka was an important land in hindu epic 'Ramayana'. it's also the most prosperous country in the indian subcontinent in terms of both per capita income and HDI so an attack like this was unimaginable

This will definitely have negative consequence on the tourism

Btw,why only church and not mosque, temples?are majority of the srilankans christians? if not then this definitely looks like a hate attack against christians.

A top police official alerted security officials in an advisory 10 days ago about a threat to churches from a radical Islamist group, National Thowheeth Jama’ath. But it was unclear what safeguards, if any, were taken, or if in the end the group played any role in the violence. And on Sunday, reflecting frictions within the government, the prime minister pointedly said he had not been informed.

I knew you'd say something like this.
He made a tweet just like the other dozen politicians. Your post only talked about the tweet and calling Americans geographically ignorant rather than the actual terrorist attack, shows where your focus is.
It was an auto-correct/ extra word added by mistake on twitter, not even worth mentioning regardless of who the person is especially considering the topic at hand.

You're free to talk about what you want and I'm free to complain about minuscule incidents like this being considered something even worth mentioning.

K its opposite exactly these commies are the one who are responsible for removing power shortage, improving women and minorties rights, etc. And recently after coming to power they are really trying hard to encourage foreign investment and taking us away from indian monopoly dependency. How about learning other country history and politics instead of crying china and communist every time when one of your closet neighbor does or atleast tries to do something right? This has to be a joke. The group has been described as terrorists sympatizers by fellow muslim group since 3 years ago yet the government doing nothing.

Also NTJ, not to be confused with TNTJ. The first one is terrorist groups, the second one condemned the attack even doing First responder to help the victim by donating blood.

And no, that wasn't really the implication. Maybe the implication of the implication, but if I were to not "read like an AI", I would say that she meant to say that it's very sad how we become desensitised to all this senseless violence, which is a symptom of these attacks happening rather often, which is obviously tragic and sad in itself.
Usually when people say these things they want to emphasize how often terroristic attacks happen, and that they're saddened by that.

@Railey2 Interesting, I didn't interpret it as peope being desensitized to terrorists attacks myself but rather people being desentisized to human deaths in general. The average person seems to care less about flood, pollution or car traffic victims than about that cat thrown into a grabage bin by a brit woman some years ago.

Now we'll just need to ask Elderanime
