Are 40+ otaku out of step with anime today, and should not be allowed in celebrating contemporary anime, or because they are anime fans and you want to talk with them about it? Are you interested in what anime they saw at your age? What do you think? |

Is this is a disguised Ageism thread? I don't know much about the anime community but I'm sure it's not one inseparable unit, having lots of different people in it. |

I think you should let them be who they want to be and do what they want to do, and not be a judgemental bleep bloop bleep (i have to censor out my own words to prevent ban) |

I personally think it is cool that you hang on to something that you are passionate for the longer you get on in life. That is a lot of knowledge and passion to discuss with someone. Personality makes everything for me though. 19 or 99, an ass is still an ass. |

If you behave as if you were an adult of that age, I think less people would take issue. If you behave like the teens who are fresh on the scene, then people will be wary of you, feeling that you are misrepresenting yourself. I'd say the majority of users here are younger than I am (27), at least from what I can tell. I'd say none of them really care which is for two reasons. The first being that I never give them reason to need to know my age, and another is that I try to act in a manner that represents my life experience, which alleviates the concern that I might be overstepping the bounds of my age. Although I would also say that a lot of people became fanatics at around my age, and so even though most are younger, there's quite a few who aren't all that much younger still. An issue you'll have to face is that most people your age didn't get into the medium when they were in their teens. Most people your age probably don't even know what anime is. They're aren't quite used to interacting with people like you in the manner they act with others who are like-minded. It isn't discrimination, it's just caution and a lack of understanding. |

@Thrashinuva I think you pretty much nailed it well, though for some older fans having grey or white hair makes it very difficult to hide your age, however unless they are vain, I'd say most wouldnt care. |

Well, I'm already in the older crowd so I don't feel scared or anything. For me, it's just a hobby I enjoy and I'm not sure what would be scary about that. Unless they're like what @KungFuIndian posted... I'm not even sure they really exist, but they're scary. |

At some point, humans are scary in general. If it's about age tho, it doesn't matter. If you are 50 and you love to dress up as pikachu while screaming pika pika on anime convent - do so, if that floats your boat. People might think that you are... something else, but this is your jam so you shouldnt really care. Also, you have to consider that some people are more or less childish, even while they are older. Just let them have fun in their short lives, dont discriminate them. |

Otaku in general are gross, its not a term of endearment as it basically means neckbeard Anime fans over 40+ however are fine. My mom's in her mid40's and still talks about trinity blood and hellsing. It all depends on if they're elitist simply cause they've been watching it longer I've met a few comic-book fans like that and I'm sure it happens in the anime community. |

Nah. I have a 50-to-70-year-old* professor who is one of the biggest geeks I know, and he's flippin' awesome! The guy loves everything from comic books to anime to silent movies to cartoons, along with everything in between. More than that, he's openly enthusiastic. He's perfect evidence that a person can grow old and still retain the fire of youth. I'd hang out with him and chat about anime (or just about anything else) any day of the week. *I'm really bad at guessing ages, okay? |
Important Note: I no longer - in any way, shape, or form - consider myself a moral nihilist (even in my old, convoluted definition of the term). I very much do believe there is such a thing as objective good and evil. In addition, I apologize for any of the posts I've made that are rude, aggressive, or otherwise unbecoming. I've always striven to walk a path befitting a follower of Christ, and now recognize some of my old comments here as misguided if not outright wrong. If you happen upon them, pray do not let them darken your view of the God I serve. He is kind, even if I, at times, have not been. |

By that logic, gamers older than 40 are also disgusting. As long as people enjoy their hobbies "normally" and don't start humping their body pillows out in public (among other public displays of degeneracy), regardless of their age, I don't care. |

I'm looking forward to being one of those, so I think they're pretty cool. There's no age limit on this hobby, although I don't think I've ever personally known an otaku/anime fan/whatever that older than 35. Unless you count meeting Peter Payne (i.e. J-List guy) at a convention. Genma314 said: Are you interested in what anime they saw at your age? Actually yes. It's not my business to care about what other people like or do in their spare time. As long as people are not harming others in society or being a danger to themselves I could really care less. To be honest if you're an older person with a cool personality and you like anime? I'd love to be your friend and see what things we can talk about regarding anime/manga. |
