It was something they taught us in grade school and even made us sing it, but I somehow only remember the first few couple of lines at most nowadays (let's just say that kind of patriotism isn't really my thing). But what about you? Did they ever actively teach you your national anthem at school? And if yes, how well do you actually remember it?

oh say can you see by the dawn's early light what so proudly we hail through the twilight's last gleaming and the bombs bursting in air the uh gave truth to the night that the flag was still there oh say does that star spangled banner yet wave the land of the free and the home of the brave

probably remember it better if i watched sports i think they do that during sports

Only the first verse, because it's very easy to remember and often quoted in the media. However, it helps that the modern anthem is essentially a stylistic reworking of the old one, and you'll still intuitively recognize it one way or another.

Yeah I know it very well.
Our national anthem is the longest in the world (it's around an hour long) but we never sing the full version because it's not practical.
We sing the first two stanzas. Very easy to remember and they last around a minute which makes it one of the shortest anthems.
It's also in 3/4 which is cool. Most anthems in the world are marches.
EDIT: I just remembered that the US anthem and God Save the King are also in 3/4. Are we secretly Anglo? Needs further investigating.

@Theo1899 What would you say is your favorite anthem? If I remember right you're an /int/ellectual so I bet you've heard a lot of them

Only like the Heavy Metal version of my country's current anthem (for musical accompaniment purposes), but overall dislike, just like I dislike the current fucking flag власовскую ёбаную тряпку of my country.

The Soviet flag and anthem were both more appropriate and memorable.

@Exhumatika You guys should go back to the black/white/yellow flag with the eagle. It looks really cool. The Soviet anthem is very hard to beat but I think East Germany managed to outdo it

It's my (Greek) anthem obviously because I'm super patriotic. Also the lyrics are cool. There are some parts that are enlightenment influenced (and I don't like the enlightentment much) but the rest is surprisingly aggressive, religious and very politically incorrect for a piece written during the enlightenment (calls Muslims dogs, calls for a crusade against them and sings about how awesome Christians are). It also praises George Washington in one verse.

So if we exclude the Greek anthem:
Favorite lyrics: Germany (the full version) - Super patriotic even though every single one of the areas mentioned is no longer within German borders. It also talks about how awesome German women and German wine are. Every patriotic song should mention those.

Favorite music: Marcha Real (Spain) - Gets you pumped to fight for Spain even if you are not Spanish.

Honorable mentions:
Japan - Lyrics are like a more poetic version of God Save the King and the melody is a very interesting Western-Japanese hybrid.

Israel - I don't care about the lyrics and I'm not a zionist but the melody is very cool. Like a sad, dramamtic film score almost.

Russia/USSR - Again I don't care much about the lyrics and I'm not a commie but the music is like a more energetic version of Pachelbel's canon (same instantly recognizable chords) and Pachelbel's canon is one of my favorite pieces.

@NS2D Black/white/yellow flag with the eagle? to satisfy only White-imperialist fanboys? No, the Red flag remains and will be the ultimate flag.

@Theo1899 I've only heard the short version of the Greek anthem but I found a full version of YouTube so I'm gonna give it a listen. I haven't heard a lot of Greek songs except for some Chrysi Avgi marches but I love the language. The national anthems of Germany and Spain are kinda boring and forgettable to me, or at least the melody. I really love the lyrics to Japan's anthem, it's one of my favorites. I agree with your take on Israel's anthem. It almost sound like something out of a Disney movie lol. And yeah, the USSR anthem is fantastic. My own favorites national anthems are East Germany, USA, France, Sweden, People's Republic of China, Japan, Tuva, and Turkey

I remember it completely. It was mandatory in school assemblies and it sounds pretty good.
If you enjoyed the time you wasted, then its not a waste of time.

@Exhumatika The red flag isn't as iconicly Russian anymore now when China has their own variant of it. The imperial flag is distinctly Russian and nothing looks similar except for some old Austrian flags. I do agree that almost anything is better than having the same somewhat boring pan-Slavic colors as everyone else. It's similar to the Middle-Eastern flags which don't really feel like they represent the country, except for the Lebanese one but even there the red should be purple instead

I hate the French anthem because I'm very anti-enlightement as I mentioned before. Fun melody though. I don't remember Sweden tbqh and I never heard the Tuvan anthem so I'll give that a listen.

That's fair. I mostly judge based on if I like the melody rather then the lyrics. The Japanese anthem is an exception where I think the lyrics is what makes the entire song

They both got quite different vibes but I think both of them got a melody that represent them well

@NS2D Nah, Russia is not Europe nor Asia. I don't know why many keep concerning themselves to this day with this stupid dividing metaphor.

Also.., China... Mao Zedong was a massive Stalin fan, plus China is free from copyrighting everything from the Soviet era.

Just like the Japanese copied some of the late Stalin economic reforms and converted them to their standards, until Americans stuck their dirty hands in and killed Japan's economic boom in the late 80s, and Japan, as always, swallowed it, as if Hiroshima and Nagasaki weren't enough.

@Exhumatika A red flag with a golden kolovrat in the middle could look pretty cool and still feel very Russian. Go with that if you don't wanna return to the imperial one :P The east mostly giving zero shits about outdated copyright laws is great. Trademarking and copyrighting human creativity is straight up anti-human in my opinion

@NS2D I mean, I don't mind. Russia and China have been coexisting together for centuries. Plus, China seems more chill when it comes to gathering more territory.

And the biggest plus is that China is not a NATO member.

As for the flag, I don't fucking like the eagle symbols; they remind me of Americans.

I get what you mean but to me the double-headed eagle is such a distinctly Byzantine and Eastern Orthodox symbol that the regular eagle that the Americans use is in a different category

Pretty much anyone here knows most of the first half of it.
Our anthem is like an anison, where the second half is basically the first, but with different lyrics, and very few people know that one.

It is also fairly long compared to other anthems, and that created trouble in international sports events a couple time.
Also the fact that part of the lyrics were based on an artistic movement called "parnasianism", which was about being verbose and speaking like Master Yoda to appear cultured.

Let's take the very first part:
Ouviram do Ipiranga as margens plácidas
De um povo heróico o brado retumbante
However, in the "right order", it would have to be
Ouviram o brado retumbante De um povo heróico as margens plácidas do Ipiranga

In English, that means "[They] heard the resounding cry of a heroic people in the calm shores of the Ipiranga [River]", but is written as "[They] heard of the Ipiranga [River] the calm shores, of an heroic people the resounding cry".

I can remember with the melody and context, but I can't really acapella it.
Same country of Wiru, we learned it in school at like 9yold, because lots of hard words. But in highschool military school, we had to sing it every friday I think, but I avoided going friday a lot. If I didn't sing it and one of the militaries surrounding us noticed I got punished into cleaning bathrooms.

Everytime our Country wins in football we also get to listen to it, and at 18 people have to sing it as part of getting left out of army.

I like how Canadian hymn has 3 versions, and it does not look like it is the english dub and the french subs are saying the same thing. https://www.canada.ca/en/canadian-heritage/services/anthem-canada.html

US anthem doesn't even really work as a anthem. It's better off being a battle hymn. "Hail Columbia" is a far better anthem.

We've learned the anthem in primary school, but all I remember are the first 2 lines.
The last 20 years I didn't run into a single occasion where I would need to sing the song, so no need to remember it anyways.

Divided eagle heads are not a good symbol, according to many here, and I personally agree.

And I highly doubt that Pravoslavni churches care too much for any flags at all, especially the ones that are deep in the countryside.

God Save the King is really nice. I grew up singing an Americanized version with different lyrics. I learned it even before I learned my national anthem.

I know it in both French and English and I'm not comfortable of singing it due to my lack of allegiance and it's a plagerization from a score in Mozart's Magic Flute, March of the Priests.

I'm more comfortable singing the March of the Volunteers. Short, concise, straight-forward, and sounding like the better version of the French national anthem.

What's funny is that I know how to sing 75% of the North Korean anthem while I still don't know how to sing the South Korean anthem, written by a controversial Korean (using a Japanese name) living in Hungary and then relocated to Spain. By the way, the original tune for the South Korean anthem was Auld Lang Syne.

Alexandr V. Alexandrov was a brilliant composer of this masterpiece. I also like his work, Sacred War (Священная война), also great in Chinese and Korean, Pyongyang accent.
