I feel like there are 3 types of anime, categorized on how much of your investment and attention they demand.

Junk anime

These are anime that are either extremely easy and simple to follow, or the ones where people say you should, "Turn your brain off" for, the kind of anime where you watch after a tiring day.
They are anime that are either trashy, generic, stupid, predictable, or just extremely easy to follow, while having a fun, lighthearted tone.
Examples include:

-Every Shitty Harem
-Anime So Bad They're Good (Big Order, King's Game)
-Easy-to-follow light hearted anime (Monster Musume, Gabriel Dropout)

Heavy Anime

These are anime that require your full attention/investment. Usually, you don't watch them just to, "relax". We're talking:

-Death Note
-Monster
-Texhnolyze
-Fullmetal Alchemist

EDIT: Screw it, I'm gonna put the 3rd category:

Light Anime

These are anime that aren't mindless, but don't require your full investment and attention either, and are still relatively light-hearted enough. Examples include:

-Love Live
-Black Lagoon
-Mushishi
-My Hero Academia
-Clannad

Sorry for that mistake, but that should clear up everything.

1) Of the 3, which do you normally watch?
2) When do you like to watch either of them?
3) If you do, which of the two do you prefer?

Personally, I prefer heavy anime, as evidenced by the ratings on my completed list, but for the past few months, I've been watching more junk anime, because I've been feeling stressful.

Am I looking at some pretentious blog post? Oh wait this is MAL, no need to be surprised.

I guess the third category would be "It's just Anime, there's no need to categorize them lol!"

I watch a lot more of the anime you call junk. They're much easier to watch. I'm currently watching LoGH but very slowly because it's hard to watch. Junk anime are much more enjoyable so even if you may call them junk in terms of entertainment, which is what they're meant for, they could be the opposite.

Edit: Looks like you now have three categories and I think the third one is the one I like the most. Also, Gabriel Dropout isn't junk, in fact it's better than Death Note which you put on some kind of a pedestal.

Not sure of calling "junk" literally everything that doesn't feature heavy psychological approach, serious plotline and shit like that. How would you tag, let's say, Hourou Musuko? Isn't heavy but it's so far from being a trashy series. If anything it explores characters better than most of what people classify as 'heavy' and deals with so many important themes without even trying to be overwhelming

also, what's up with Mushishi? it's SO chill that calling it 'heavy' is a bit... you known?

I think Soredemo Tsuma o Aishiteru can be classified as a heavy type show as it deals with the difficulties of marriage.

Uhm, the main problem I see here is that "junk" is too wide of a category. You should probably divide it because I doubt you get a similar experience as a viewer with bad anime than with a good lighthearted anime.

Either way, I'd say I watch most of the first with reasonable amounts of the second. The third category is not as clearly defined and I cant decide which belong and which not. The issue here is that the whole "anime to turn your brain off" rubs me the wrong way. I don't need to stop thinking, analysing and paying attention to enjoy these shows; in fact I may enjoy them more that way.

FMA is considered as "heavy" anime? ^^"
I don't think that these classifications are reasonable. Different things have different, individual atmospheres to them. Many of them have a healthy mix of drama and comedy imo and that's what I personally prefer.

... Texhnolyze wasn't even heavy... what I can judge from the episodes I saw. It was too dry for me. It's the same with "artsy movies" vs. "Hollywood movies" - they don't have to be shallow or something. They are just not that dry and have a higher entertainment factor. ^^" Anyway, sometimes you want to watch them, because some seem to be interesting and you like their motifs.

I'm also more interested in people aka to "bond" with characters I like (and cool world concepts ofc). Other people are more into philosophical concepts and that's okay too, if their favorite shows have a strong focus on them.
These things aren't "heavier" tho. They only have a different approach.

And... Mushishi is just very relaxing - and thrilling at the same time. Tho, it's really not "light". ^^

1. All of the above, because variety. Depends on what type of shows are playing in the current season.
2. Anytime, all day, every day.
3. None. I appreciate both the simplistic and complicated for different reasons.

What the hell is this biased category?
What the hell is this biased categorized animes?

If it's preferences, I'm reading and watching all category combined in a story.
Ex.
(Anime and Manga)
Made in Abyss - it can be funny and relaxing or deep and dark,
Mahoutsukai no Yome - same as above, but more into character development and journey encounter
Gintama - comedy and drama

There are anime that are combination of those you've mentioned. DN, FMA, Mushishi aren't heavy. And Black Lagoon isn't light-hearted.
Also some anime with simple plot are better than some so called "complex ones" It all comes down to execution.
Sometimes, what you call "junk">> "heavy." It's hard to categorize anime bec it depends on someone's view of them. DN is heavy for you, but for me it's not.

I watch a variety of anime, from lighthearted SoLs, gags, random shit, psychological /thriller with heavy plot to hentai. (And I can't put them on the same category when I score, since I score with genre) Either way, I watched the 3 categories as you call them.

How much investment and attention an anime gets should depend on the individual anime and your interest in it, not some pre-conceived set of superficial categories.

Well any anime I watch, I provide my full attention, otherwise there is no point in even watching it. If it turns out to be something I consider trash, I'll usually soldier it out for two more episodes or so, before dropping it. That said, this junk category of yours is basically non-existent to me because I can't determine whether or not something is junk without watching it and if I do find it to be trashy then I invest no more time in to it at all. However, I do watch harems, generic, predictable and easy-to-follow anime; I just don't consider them as being junk.
In regards to the "heavy" and "light" categories, they make slightly more sense but tbh all of your 3 categories are non-existent to me. I see where you're going with these categories, but they're relatively subjective; one might find FMA as being a "light anime" and others might consider Mushishi as a "heavy anime." One might believe Black Lagoon requires their full attention others might feel like Death Note does not. So I see what you're getting at but in all reality these categories are just a bunch of nonsense, my friend.

p.s.
I do believe there are certain genres and certain elements of different anime that cater to different moods though.

It's a very complicated dilemma for me. Everytime before and while I watch an anime, I am in constant thought over weather it is a Junk, Heavy or Light Yagami type of anime.

I realized that Junk and Heavy anime are usually the same thing. They're Americanized dubs that promote fast food like Pizza Hut or McDonalds.

Light anime are ones that use pretty colors and soft visual effects. Like Kyoto Animation anime.

I slightly prefer Light anime since Naoko Yamada is my favorite director and I absolutely love the way anime like K-On and Koe no Katachi look and feel.

Though I like all anime in general.

1) Of the 3, which do you normally watch?
I only watch anime that fit my preferences, not based on this 3 category

2) When do you like to watch either of them?
Whenever I feel like it. Always at night.

3) If you do, which of the two do you prefer?
If I had to choose, I like anime with interesting plot and characters, relaxing and plotless anime like SoL is not my cup of tea. So my pick would be either Heavy or Light Anime.

I give all anime I've watched my full attention.

This.

I'm having trouble distinguishing objectively between these three categories anyway, because I approach what I watch with the same sort of mindset anyway. Different moods, sure like "I'm in the mood for something sci-fi now", but regardless of mood, I tend to follow similar patterns of getting to know the characters and familiarizing myself with the setting in order to understand the story that they are telling.

I don't "turn off my brain" or my emotional engagement or whatever for any series.

Not really pretentious; just sorta bluntly putting out there OP's own idea for categorizing their experiences.

I like these threads actually. They let me consider how my experiences differ from theirs and ask what that means.
