Because it's the polar opposite of moe. THE polar opposite. A lot of people value that here, myself included. Mecha doesn't interest me, but I don't necessarily think that all shows that use mechas as a central aspect are inherently 'bad' as a result of it; it's just doesn't suit my tastes.

I can tell you about my personal opinion.

I simply find the whole theme unappealing. I am not sure why. I could only watch NGE, but that is probably because the Mecha aspect IMO was secondary. SInce, the EVAs are not exactly robotic.

Don't even try to think why MAL does anything.

If you didn't grew up with mecha it can be hard to get into...
Most people started with shounen fighter series, which are pretty opposite from mecha as far as the fighting goes (physical strength+some kind of magic vs piloting ability)

At first i was too pretty reluctant with mecha, but eventually i grew to like the genre, after watching Geass, Eva and RahXephon (went into them blind without knowing about the mecha elements)

And Code Geass and TTGL are pretty high rated so that's that.. these are the exception for many people
I dont think its hate, just generally avoiding the genre because of preconceptions and whatnot; im sure that those who liked cg/ttgl might also like other mecha series if they wanted to

Dunno if people really hate it tho .

The mecha elements present in Code Geass are pretty shallow. The story was hardly centered around them, and the abilities of the Knightmares were only a third of the combat focus.

Honestly though, aside from NGE and MAYBE Lagan, most mechas I know of are basically this. Did you have something else in mind?

BTW, by "mecha" I don't mean every mecha. I do not consider power suits or humans transforming into some kind of (not fucking giant) robot Mecha. For example, I do not consider Code Geass a typical mecha, like Gundam.

The mechanical designs don't appeal to me. I rather watch action with humans fighting. I'm still going to watch Gundam at some point since they can't be classics for nothing. If a mecha show offers something besides the action then I'll like it.

I must say I wasn't particularly impressed by RahXephon. It's mostly a huge harem, with cool mecha designs that allow some really, really cheap (read lazy) animation.

When I think that it came out 15 years after Patlabor... urg.

Currently watching Mobile Police Patlabor. I still have the movies, and Garasaki (seems like a decent real robot show with some bullshit mysticism slapped over it) after that. I'll probably take a break from Mecha afterwards.

I could argue that FLCL doesn't fall in the "best robot wins" category either, but FLCL is fucked up, let's not talk about that one.

I didn't grow up watching mecha, but I liked it after I watched it for the first time. I like Aldnoah.Zero(despite the second season being pretty shitty) and the Saijaku Muhai no Bahamut LN. But I'm a person who can appreciate all genres, except pure comedy(I don't like comedy), so that might be why mecha wasn't a trouble for me...

I havent seen enough Mecha anime to hate it, but I can say it doesn't really appeals to me and I feel the majority starts with the same premise "A guy who never piloted a robot, somehow they make him pilot for whatever reason, he gets a suddenly mission, (the setting is always the same too, humans live in a portion of a meteor or a enourmos space station or something and the're ugly monsters that we need to destroy) the MC gets in the robot and he knows how to pilot that shit perfectly and yeah" right now im watching shidonia no kishi and so far the first two episodes reminds me of Macross Frontier (about the MC, there's not cool idol songs in sidonia, sadly)

Im not saying ALL mecha shows are like that, but the little I've seen are pretty similar to that xd

Eh, mecha suffers from "good guys always win" just like every other battle oriented series. But there are some series labeled mecha that are not heavy on action like the FMP series, Gargantia, and maybe M3.
And those where enemies are mostly non-mechanical, like Eva, RahXephon, Knights of Sidonia, Cross Ange, Magic Knight Rayearth, and much of the Aquarion series.
Do you even mecha? I haven't watched Gundam, but i believe in some entries the mechas are just like in Code Geass..

From what I can remember Code Geass doesn;t have the same fell and style as Gundam regarding Mecha. Might be wrong.

I'm going to do a shitty scale just for giggles, maybe it'll be helpful lol.

"How much mecha in:"
-Kill la Kill : 1/10
-FLCL: 3/10
-NGE: 5/10
-Mobile Police Patlabor: 8/10
-Gurren Lagann: 10/10

There isn't a problem, I just couldn't think of a way to explain it without it dragging on a bit too much. In short, it relates to the extent to which the battle sequences involve particular story events, and character relationships besides actual intricate mecha combat. Can't nutshell it better than that.

Since Gunbuster, yeah. Are you knew to the medium or? that's why Gurren Lagann is a super robot and Gundams are real robot shows.

I still don't see the problem with Code Geass, there are a lot of battle sequences and character relationships and mecha are fighting mecha.

There is a definite difference between a power suit, some kind of biological robot thing, and a huge Robot with rocket launchers and machineguns.

All are mecha, yes, but clearly on a different spectrum.

This is rather interesting because it's something I've seen a lot and that people saying it has seen very few or even not a single mecha show. I mean they take the concept (guys using robots) and maybe some previous vague experience with a rather bad mecha show (there were a shit load of mediocre ones like any other genre) and then overgeneralize over the whole thing.

Good mechas I've watched so far:
Gunbuster
Patlabor
NGE
{Didn't include other shows tagged as mecha because they don't feel like it}

Planning to watch more of them, and obviously get into Gundam and Macross soon. Big franchises with both some promising and other really bad-looking titles on them.

I dont even think mecha is the most hated thing on MAL, I feel like Ecchi/Harem and school settings get waaay more hate.

I personally don't really hate mecha, its just something that doesnt appeal to me. Most mechas do have a similar kind of story(weak boy gets the best mecha and then has to fight in some war),that isnt too interesting imo. But I am actually fine with mecha, when a show has more than action in it. Like Robotics;Notes or Suisei no Gargantia.
